Well hello July! The months are flying by as per usual, and here we are entering the latter half of 2024. It’s time to sit down and catch up over a sip of something brewed. I’m linking up with Deborah, Coco and you for the Ultimate Coffee Date. I coffeefess that it’s been so hot here, I’ve opted for iced coffee on a few occasions.
Over coffee I’d tell you we had the best time celebrating the Caveman’s milestone birthday. He’s preposterously difficult to buy for…because he’s both picky, and gets what he wants for himself.
We’re at the stage of our lives where experiences > things so when I saw that rock legend Roger Daltry was performing at Ravinia this summer I jumped on it and reserved a couple of blocks of lawn tickets. It was SO nice to have family and friends together for an evening of music from The Who. Mom Nature dished up an evening of gorgeous weather too!
I made his favorite Angel Food cake again, and I’m happy to say it traveled to the concert very well. I’m not sure I used the same recipe as last year but this one was delicious so it’s all good.
Over coffee I’d ask you if you’ve noticed the “F” word creeping in. That’s F as in Fall. While it’s not quite so bad to see that F word in July, I don’t care to hear anything about Fall or Back to School in June. And shame on the retail establishment who had the audacity to talk about Halloween in June. I won’t have it!
Over coffee I’d tell you that I managed not to cry at Thing 2’s high school graduation. That said, I was so wistful when I recently left the various “high school parent” Facebook groups, and unsubscribed from school club and band email lists, etc. It’s beginning to sink in that we no longer have school age children in the district. Time marches on.
Over coffee I’d ask you if you’re growing anything in the garden this year. The combination of heat and wicked storms seems to be a good combo for gardening here as both my flowers and veggies are doing quite well. I’ve already gotten plenty of herbs, peppers and tomatoes. They’re so much better than anything available in the grocery store.
What would you tell me over coffee? Are you embracing summer? Or looking forward to fall?
I’m linking up with Darlene, Michelle, Renee, Jenn and Zenaida, for Fit Five Friday. Join us!

There is definitely no fall around DC area it’s been crazy hot and humid. I do love fall and dream of it often lol. Sounds like a fab celebration with your family. It’s impossible to buy stuff for my husband too.
Coco says
That cake looks amazing!
The Caveman sounds like my husband as far as gifts. It’s frustrating because he is such a good gift-giver himself. It sounds like your celebration was a hit!
It feels like schools just got out around here so nobody’s talking about back-to-school yet.
Jenny says
Well, I’m looking forward to fall but I have a looooong wait. It doesn’t usually cool down here till November. But- every year I start to see Halloween things after July 4th. Yes, I agree- that’r ridiculously early, but I still get a little excited about it.
RAVINIA! I told you I spent many, many summers there. I’m glad you had such a good night, and yes that’s a PERFECT birthday present!
Yes, time marches on. I have three more years of having a high school student, but I know how fast these years go.

Wow, those peppers look great! My mini garden, via a window box planter set-up, is filling-out, but there’s only one “baby” tomato thus far. Your cake looks divine ad well. What a great venue for the caveman’s celebration:-)

That looks like such a beautiful evening at Ravinia! I see that you even have space for picnic tables. Fabulous!
I bet your husband loved it. I also prefer experiences over things – when I look at the photos I go through all the positive vibes all over again.
We’re still waiting for summer here in Switzerland. Apparently, there hasn’t been a rain-free weekend here for months!

hehe, it’s definitely been super hot here, so I’ve been all about the colder drinks lately too!
That cake looks absolutely amazing!
I’m embracing summer (not much changes for me other than the weather, hehe), but fall is one of my favorite seasons too!
Renée says
oh Marcia if someone already started talking to me about Fall right now I’m pretty sure another F word would come out of my mouth. Bad enough the weather is all over the place. Ron even suggested to turn the heating on yesterday!!
I can imagine it is emotional to now move on from all things high school. time indeed marches on.
your husbands birthday celebration sounds absolutely perfect!!
Michelle says
Sounds like a fun way to celebrate your hubby’s birthday – and that cake looks oh so good!
I’ve been having the same feelings as I unsubscribe from various high school mail lists – time truly does keep rolling along.
No signs of fall here yet – it’s so annoying when retailers start pushing the calendar too quickly. Meanwhile, I’m trying to figure how how to get time to slow down a little! LOL
Zenaida Arroyo says
I like Fall but I am not ready for it yet. I hate seeing back-to-school stuff right now. I went to Michael’s the other day and saw Halloween stuff already.
Jenn says
You’re leaving the groups? I don’t know what that will be like… Confession: I binge FB groups instead of watching TV. I get my best entertainment from there, sometimes.
Your husband’s birthday looked amazing. What a special way to celebrate. And that cake was a work of art, for sure!
Lots of hugs to you. Transitions are hard.
But bring on fall. I am thinking about throwing a small summerween or christmas in july party because if I don’t get a break from this heat, I’m going to cry or melt or both.
