Well here we are, its officially summer at last, although I’ve been proceeding as though it were summer for quite some time now. Summer is a quick season here in Chicagoland and I’ll draw it out any way I can. Last week we celebrated the summer solstice with the full, strawberry moon. The Strawberry Moon is a good time to reflect on how far we’ve come and to reassess our long-term goals.
Summer Running and the Strawberry Moon
I haven’t been on here much, because I’m busy enjoying myself…and working too much of course. Some things haven’t changed. I’m still moving though. Here’s how the week in workouts went:
Sunday: Walk 4 miles, Trail Run 4 miles, 1 hour pickleball
Monday: Walk 2 miles, otherwise a long, early work day
Tuesday: Walk 2 miles, Strength + Core
Wednesday: Walk 2 miles, 30 min Cycle workout + Strength
Thursday: Walk 2 miles, otherwise rest
Friday: Walk 2 miles, Trail Run 4 miles, Slow Flow Yoga
Saturday: Walk 2 miles, work conference
Like most of the country, it’s been so flipping hot here. I won’t complain because, again, we don’t get much summer here so I’ll go with the flow of blazing heat and humidity. You’ll notice our walk distance was cut in half this week. It’s just too much heat for Ozzy.
While I’m grateful I am not training for anything, my athletes training for Berlin, Chicago, and a host of other fall races are underway. I am excited for them….and I also well remember how challenging training through the summer is. See me tips for running in heat here.

Summer here is party season. Thing 1 will celebrate her birthday in Atlanta this week, but she’s making a visit to Chicago just a few days later for the Caveman’s milestone birthday as well as the July 4th holiday. I am excited to see her! Speaking of that milestone birthday, I reserved a block of seats at Ravinia, our local outdoor concert venue and am elbow deep in picnic fare prep for a party under the stars. So far the weather is looking like it’ll be clear with a high of 90 and 68 for the low. As long as rain is not in the forecast, I am good!
In college news, the drop-off countdown is very much on. The dorm room has been procured and course selection is done. It’s all getting real. Very real. I’m doing my best to be present and live into every moment we have left together. Sniff.

That Ravinia concert venue looks very cool! A bit like the concerts at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens here in Cape Town.
I guess your planned picnic is for that event, where you bring along your things to eat and drink? Who will be playing on your night?
Jenny says
Fun fact- I worked at Ravinia for many summers- the house where I grew up is within walking distance. I wonder how much it’s changed since I was there! Anyway- that sounds like an amazing birthday celebration.
Enjoy every precious second with the family!!!

Hugs. Leaving A in a dorm room for a week for camp was a bit of an emotional smack. Bittersweet, is all I can say. But it’s also exciting in so many ways.
I will complain about summer all day because it’s so long here. I’m ready for winter.
