The dust is settling here as back-to-school time gets closer. Thing 2 has her “last first day” on Monday. Ready or not, senior year is here. Wasn’t I just dropping her off at preschool a few years ago? I say it often: Time flies. I’ve been quiet on social media lately because, well work has been off the leash, but I’m also doing my best to be present and savor these final weeks of school-free summer. The workouts are on auto pilot, but they’re happening:
Sunday: Walk 4 miles, Heavy Strength
Monday: Walk 4 miles, Trail Run 4 miles
Tuesday: Walk 4 miles, Strength
Wednesday: Walk 4 miles, Treadmill intervals 40 mins.
Thursday: Walk 4 miles, otherwise rest
Friday: Walk 4 miles, 20 mins. Bike Hills & Sprints, Full-Body Strength + Core
Saturday: Walk 4 miles, Trail Run 5 miles
Running Into August
College Send-Off Parties
Who Knew college send-off parties were a thing? Apparently they are. We’ve gone to a few and they’re fun so I’m going with it. It’s fun to cheer on all the kiddos as they move on to the next chapter. It’s a very exciting time of year
Tomatoes Everywhere
It’s also that time of year when the garden goes nuts and let’s just say I’ve got a few tomatoes.
Caprese salad with fresh-picked tomatoes and basil is always a good idea…
…so is this Tomato-Corn-Avocado Salad. I just grilled the corn for a few minutes, cut it off the cob, threw in some red onions, drizzled with olive oil, a little fresh lime juice and zest and a bit of cilantro and called it good!

Berlin Marathon Course Tips: Fall marathon time is creeping up and the Berlin Marathon will be here before we know it. I did a quick course chat over on YouTube.
How was your week? Ever attend or have a college send-off party? Any delicious dishes?

It’s such a weird feeling not having anyone going back to school this fall. In fact, I’m driving up to Madison today to help M move to Chicago. And that is also making me feel sad. I will miss having him up there!
We’ve had some really good sweet corn from this farm up in Wisconsin. Last summer, Mike blanched and froze a bunch of it for winter. It sure tasted good in January!

It is surreal to know that you will soon be an empty nester. Bittersweet for sure. Hope your daughter has a great year of HS and you do too 🙂 Those tomatoes look amazing! My favorite veggie by far.

Your salads look amazing!
You are wise to savor these days. Senior year will be a whirlwind!

My week was busy but in a fun way.
The deer ate all my plants last year so this year only patio tomatoes (and not many).
Your kids grew up so fast… almost an empty nester.

Aw…. I hope the “last first day” tomorrow goes well! I’m still a little bitter that I missed all those with my son- his senior year was Covid and he didn’t even go to school. Well, hopefully my daughter will have a senior year of high school! I take nothing for granted anymore.
You had a really solid week of workouts! Someday if you feel like sharing, I would love to know what a “heavy strength” workout looks like for you. Not to compare myself (because that would be futile and depressing) but I always like seeing what other people do. Wendy’s workouts are always very motivating to me even though I’ll probably never be as strong as she is- I just like to see what’s possible.

Our tomatoes are starting to go nuts, as well. I tomatofess, I think I eat more cherry tomatoes right off the vine than I actually bring inside, LOL. Your salads both look tasty…I might have to steal those!

Ooh those tomatoes look amazing!

Oh, grilled corn is so yummy.
I think the idea of a college send-off party is fun. Aa little last hurrah before they go off.
we have two more first days and three more last days. Not. Cool.

I’ve got a couple more weeks before my high schooler has his “last first day” – I’m so with you on the idea of savoring every moment. Senior year will be a whirlwind!
Our tomato plants have gone wild in the past couple of weeks – I’ll need to try your grilled corn salad recipe.

Your tomatoes look amazing! Sadly this year I couldn’t grow anything or do any gardening because of my injury. But I’ve been enjoying the super spicy rocket salad a friend gave us, and kale from a local farmer. I love a good Caprese salad!
I’ve never heard of a college send-off party but it sounds like it could be fun!

Thanks for the Berlin Marathon Course Tips!
With my race in Berlin coming up in September, it was good to hear those reminders.
Also, it made me aware of how different life in Europe is from the US and how Americans perceive German culture. This is going to be very useful for US runners who have never been to Europe! Your points were spot on.

Your salads look delicious. I love tomatoes and mozzarella cheese (just ate today for lunch).
I ran the half in Berlin in 2011: a very beautiful route.

Since we don’t have kids, and don’t really have friends with school age kids — nope on the send off party. Enjoy it while you can! You are smart to try and savor this time.
We have a real bumper crop of weeds over here!

Here’s to a fabulous senior year for your daughter! And you’re correct, time flies!
Oh that tomato-corn-avocado salad looks delicious! I quit trying to grow tomatoes when deer jumped the fence and ate them from our garden, and then the following year groundhogs and squirrels ate them when I tried to grow them in pots on the deck.

I haven’t been to a college send off party, but my son did attend a few this year. I can only imagine it is a bittersweet moment for the seniors, but with social media they do keep in touch more (I hope!) than I ever did with my high school friends.
I think I overwatered my garden this year, if there is such a thing. Our tomato plants haven’t really done much at all. Sad!!
