How is it August already? Were we not just lamenting the halfway point of the year?? Now here we are spiraling toward fall. I love fall as much as the next person but I’m not in any hurry, that’s for sure. Anyhoo, let’s chat over coffee. Catching up is always a good idea.
I’m sitting down with Deborah, Coco and you for a little catch up chat over coffee. What’ll you have?
Let’s Chat Over Coffee
Over coffee I’d ask you how your garden grows, if you have one of course. I opted not to grow anything in our community garden this year, but I do have some containers on our deck as well as some herbs and we’re right at that point where everything starts to go nuts. The tomatoes are so SO good!
Over coffee I’d ask you if you’ve ever heard of or experienced the monitors insurance companies ask you to drive with on your car so you can potentially receive discounts on your auto insurance. I’ve used such a monitor for the past month or so. It rates every trip I take on Braking, Acceleration, Cornering, Speed and Phone Distraction. While I consider myself a very safe driver and (knock wood) haven’t had a moving violation this century, I do like to pick up my driving pace shall we say…now and again. So I’ve been trying very very hard to drive at the speed limit. All that said, I’ve noticed that not speeding often means I am not “moving with traffic” and even though I make sure to drive in the right lane, I get tail gaited much more often. Last week I was doing 53 on a 50 mph, single-lane road with minimal shoulder because there was water on each side of the road, and the guy behind me got so irate, he went into the oncoming lane in a no passing zone, with a car approaching head-on, way too close for comfort, just to pass me. I runfess it was a tad hilarious when I rolled up into the left turn lane right next to him at the red light…his stupidly dangerous decision to pass me gained him nothing. But all that said, I think having this “safety” monitor is making my drives less safe. I want to stop using it and go back to driving as usual.
And finally I’d tell you I’m probably the biggest doof that’s ever walked the planet. I’ve had this insulated cup for years and I just learned the other day that the sliding part of the top SNAPS OUT so you can wash it. I’ve been scrubbing and soaking it in vain, and have not been able to get it as clean as I’d like until, thanks to Google, I learned it simply snaps off. Doh!
What would you tell me over coffee? Would you continue to use the driving monitor?
I’m also linking up with Darlene, Michelle, Renee, Jenn and Zenaida, for Fit Five Friday. Join us!

I am such a weirdo that if I had that monitor I would try to hit everything perfectly just get the A. LOL. I consider myself a pretty safe and aware driver but admittedly go over the speed limit at times. People are very aggressive out there! I wish I could have my own garden alas, the deer are way too aggressive and hungry 🙂
Coco says
I do not like those monitors. Too much big brother and the ratings are not based on your actual experience — like the flow of traffic or road conditions.
The basil in my Aerogarden is growing like crazy — does that count? 😉

My husband made me use a monitor a few years ago for the insurance discount. I HATED it and I am not a speed demon at all. It was the starting from a start that drove me bonkers. Well, I did survive the experience. 🙂 And have yet to repeat it.
There are so many things we learn . . . .for instance I just learned a popular Yoga cue (one I rarely use, thankfully) can be interpreted by Ozzies as lots of shagging!

Road rage & tailgating are buzzkills. I was leaving Des Moines, recently, and some jerk (in a zippy little sports car), was weaving across all four lanes at a rapid speed. Compensating much? LOL
Darlene S Cardillo says
My insurance agent tried to talk me into a monitor. I said a big fat NO.
The deer eat all my plants so this year just a patio tomato plant but yes, the tomatoes are soo good.
Jenn says
I am no longer much of a speeder. It’s too unsafe down here (the roads are long and straight which means people doze off at high speeds). I don’t think you were being less safe going 53… I think people in general get impatient and make risky decsions.
Jenny says
Oh yes, people drive crazily down here. So aggressive and they get really mad if you’re simply trying to stay at the speed limit. There is something to be said for staying with the flow of traffic- of course it would be even better if everyone just drove the speed limit.
Anytime I don’t know something, my son says, very patiently, as if I were a small child, “well Mom, have you googled it yet?” Yes, google has an answer for just about everything.
Zenaida Arroyo says
I’ve used one of those monitors from Allstate. They have discontinued it and how they track my driving through my phone. Ugh, those drivers are the worst! Many people are in such a hurry and very impatient that they make the road unsafe for other drivers and pedestrians. You keep driving the way you drive. You have nothing to gain either if you do speed up for that driver behind you. Well, those are my two cents. 🙂
Black Knight says
I’ve never heard about this kind of monitors but I wouldn’t like to use it.
However many people here are crazy and aggressive while driving.

there was a Buzzfeed on all the products you’re doing wrong, I wonder if this was on that.
Those monitors would creep me out. I admit to a leadfoot although driving in a a signed 80 freeway? Just no
