This week was all about settling in and getting back to “normal” after another week of crazy summer heat, travel and fun. After some big airline delays due to storms in Chicago, and a reroute through Charlotte, NC, we made it home in the wee hours Sunday morning. The goal was all about getting back on track. Here’s how my workouts went:
Sunday: Home at 2:30 am, worked all day
Monday: Walk 4 miles, Strength + Core
Tuesday: Walk 4 miles, Trail Run 4 miles
Wednesday: Walk 4 miles, Bike Tabata, Strength, Core
Thursday: Walk 4 miles, otherwise rest
Friday: Walk 4 miles, Trail Run 4 miles
Saturday: Walk 4 miles, Bike Hills & Sprints, Strength + Core
Last week was college tour week for Thing 2. Like her sister, she’s leaning toward a school in a warmer climate (surprise) so our journey began in Tampa and took us through Tallahassee, Auburn AL, and then on to SC, where we ended up in Charleston.
Let’s just say touring 6 universities in 5 days was exhausting. Those 2-hour walking tours in a triple-digit heat index are no joke. But it was fun too. Senior year starts in just a few weeks and so does the college application process. Exciting times ahead.
After the whirldwind tour, we spent a few days relaxing in Charleston, SC. Charleston is always a good idea.
So is a night-time ghost tour…and a haunted hotel!
I’ve done more than my share of traveling, eating and not working out lately. I did actually do some swimming and pool running while we were in FL-AL-SC. With overnight lows well into the 80s, I was not one bit interested in running, and those hotel treadmills held no allure either. This past week was much more on track and I’ve been mostly added-sugar-free, but with Thing 2’s birthday on the horizon this week, there is birthday cake in my future.
Runfession Friday Linkup
Summer is flying away and it is time once again to open the Runfessional. Join me right here this Friday!
I’ll leave you with this pic of my hibiscus that’s finally blooming. It was distressed when I got it but all seems to be well now. Happy summer!
How was your week? How are you making the most of what remains of summer?
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

It’s definitely toasty down here in the south! It looks like you did just fine, though. I love Charleston–Lisa and I went there on one of our sister trips. I wonder where J will go? Happy birthday to her. It’s hard to believe she’s going to be a senior this year.

Well, I’m making the most of what I’ve got (which ain’t a lot). Better days ahead . . . some day. I don’t envy you the college touring in the south during Summer, though! Seriously, most of the time it’s hot enough up here!
I’ll bet it feels good to be home. Swimming is a great substitute for running in my book!
Deborah Brooks says
I loved Charleston when we toured there years ago. College tours are fun and yes, exhausting. It all jus goes by too fast
Coco says
I love your hibiscus!
You covered a lot of ground in that trip. Does she have more on her list or does that cover her top interests?
A ghost tour in Charleston does sound really fun.
Debbie says
Those college tours sound exhausting, but fun. Happy early birthday to your daughter – they grow up so fast!
We were in Charleston with the fam in March for spring break. It was my first visit and I loved it there!
Jenny says
Were you looking at USF in Tampa? I’ll be excited to find out what your daughter chooses. And yes- walking tours in this heat are not fun. Just keep thinking about those lovely winters she’ll have! How did you guys like FSU? And, WHAT? It’s time for runfessions already? Sheesh! Well, i have some!
Jessie says
The south is having record setting heat right? Did that change your daughter’s mind at all or is she still ready to for the warmer climate?? All of her options sound amazing, wishing her all the luck on the decision!
Michelle says
I’m with you on the college tours – fun and tiring! You covered a lot of territory – we’ve not done the back-to-back visits yet. The Charleston ghost tour sounds like fun!
Jenn says
Oh, how fun! I can’t even wrap my head around college tours, but it’s not so far off.
And I still haven’t been to Charleston. We had a whole trip planned but had to cancel because my husband was sick. Maybe one day.
Get some rest!
Kimberly Hatting says
Busy, busy busy!!! I can only imagine how exhausting all those tours were, especially in the heat. I bet it was so much fun, though, seeing all the campuses. Hey, you totally get a pass on focused fitness when you’re doing all that walking 😉
Catrina says
Did you drive all that by car or were there flights in between? Either way, it sounds like a very packed schedule.
Most of the kids here stay with their parents and go to the university in their home town – I guess it’s easier from a financial/logistical aspect but not as exciting.
Black Knight says
As Catrina wrote here also most of the kids stay with the parents and go to the university in their hometown or in cities close to it.
I would like to visit those cities but mine it’s an impossible dream because my wife doesn’t want to fly anymore.
Happy birthday to your daughter.

I can understand Thing 2 (and Thing 1) wanting warmer weather but the South is just tooooooo hot and humid for me! I bet y’all had a blast though and I’m sure she will love wherever she decides to go!
Seems like you did your best to get back on track – may it continue!
