Friends: Half the freaking year is over. OVER! I swear time flies faster and faster. Before we welcome July in all it’s red, white and blue glory, let’s open up the Runfessional. I’m calling mine the Safari Edition, for obvious reasons.
You probably know I’m recently back from a adventure of a lifetime. Our trip to Africa and Europe was epic. What was not as epic was my workout schedule. I runfess I did zero runs and zero workouts, unless you count climbing in and out of a safari jeep and tons of walking. I also runfess I am not one bit sorry about it.
Running while on safari in Africa was mostly out of the question. However I runfess there was a perfect opportunity to get in a run along the canal our hotel sat on in Amsterdam. I runfess I sat and sipped an extra cup of coffee instead. Again, sorry not sorry.
The Comrades Marathon took place the day we arrived in South Africa. Many of my running friends asked if I was there to participate. I runfess I paid no attention to Comrades and had no idea it was happening at that time, but in hindsight a tiny part of me can’t help but think it would’ve been so cool if I’d run it. There’s one issue though, and it’s kind of a big one. Comrades is a 90k. Running a 55 mile race isn’t quite in my wheelhouse at this point…or possibly ever.
I runfess I broke my Peloton streak. I’m going to blame the international travel, overnight flights and not connecting to the internet in Capetown. It is what it is. While I blew my daily streak, apparently Peloton is still considering my WEEKLY streak intact, so I’ll take what I can get.
We did lots of research before we arrived in Africa. We discovered the most effective vaccines, Malaria drugs and insect repellents for the high-risk areas on our itinerary. Our hotel in Zimbabwe had a couple of repellents right in the room. I figured they probably knew better than I which brand of repellant was most effective for the insects of the area, so I safarifess I sprayed myself down with something called DOOM (sounds effective, right?) and instructed Thing 2 to do so as well. It wasn’t until a couple of minutes later that the Caveman brought it to my attention that DOOM was actually the African version of RAID, and we’d just applied insecticide generously to our bodies.
Ok your turn! What have you to runfess? Ever skip all workouts while on vacay?
I’m also linking up with Darlene, Michelle, Renee, Jenn and Zenaida, for Fit Five Friday. Join us!

Okay that’s pretty hilarious about the bug spray! Sounds like and looks like you had a fabulous vacation. I think it’s great that you were able to relax and have so much fun and family time. Peloton is still here for you when you return. Admittedly I am not so great at letting it go but maybe I can try!
Kimberly Hatting says
HA, oh the DOOM! I’ve blown my daily Peloton streak(s) a couple of times, without even knowing it. My week streak is going strong, though, LOL Your trip looked fabulous from all the pics I saw on Insta 😉

It’s hard to get a workout in on a safari! Can’t go out running with the lions…
I was very lucky that we stayed in a place that had a treadmill when we went on our safari. It was a lodge that belongs to Richard Branson’s Virgin Group and I guess he’s a fitness freak.
I’ve been thinking about the Comrades too…. such a legendary race, but so long!!

OMG on the “raid”. Now that WOULD creep me out. Well, if it kills roaches it’ll kill anything that attacks you, right?
Lots of walking absolutely counts. Even better, not stressing for a change (hopefully) counts even more. Your photos of your adventure are stunning!
Wendy says
LOL on the bug spray fail! I would imagine the bugs left you alone, lol!
Don’t you have to qualify for Comrades? I read an article about people cheating to get in. And we thought Boston was bad!
I wouldn’t have run there either! There was too much to see.
Darlene S. Cardillo says
That trip sounds amazing. And all that walking kept you in shape. I wouldn’t worry.
I do try to run on vacation. But then again I’m usually training for a race. And I’m in places where it’s easy to get a run in.
Michelle says
OMG too funny about the Doom! I guess you were totally safe from bugs at that point!
I would have skipped the running too and just enjoyed the sights. It looked like an amazing vacation!
Jessie says
Sounds like an amazing vacation! 90k…eeks!
Wow on the Doom/Raid!! clearly it must be “okay”???
Coco says
Yikes on the Doom! Good thing you’re not insects. Your trip looked truly amazing. You got some incredible pictures, but I’m sure nothing comes close to being there.
I don’t blame you at all for not running on your trip. I would have (not) done the same thing!
I think it’s great that Peloton keeps track of weekly streaks — it’s more realistic anyway!
Jenny says
That is so cool you were there during Comrades!!! It would have been fun to spectate it, but that probably wasn’t part of your itinerary.
I don’t think I’ve ever skipped all workouts while on vacation… but then again I’ve never gone on an African safari. Like you said, this was the trip of a lifetime. Some things are more important than a Peloton streak!
I’m laughing at the DOOM story. I especially like how it’s sitting right next to a canister clearly marked “insect repellent.”
Erica @ Erica Finds says
I have skipped running on vacations – especially on safari b/c what can you do!? I do love running in other cities so I ran a bunch in Stockholm and Copenhagen. We also walked a ton every single day!
Rachel says
That is hilarious about the DOOM bug spray! I can see myself doing the same thing though. HAHA!
I think it is cool that you were there during Comrades!!
I didn’t realize the linkup had already closed so I’m attaching my post here: https://www.livingonthesunnyside.com/runfessions-6-30-23/

And what an adventure it seemed to be! I’m so glad you had the opportunity to do that!
I think RAID is better than some of the bugs you might have encountered!

I didn’t “vacationfess” this month because I did my best to step away while I was in Costa Rica. I got in a fair amount of hiking and walking, but no runs and I didn’t even pretend to do any strength exercises. While I did see the occasional runner, the roads really weren’t conducive and it felt like the runners must have had a death wish. And LOL at the Raid/Doom. I’d probably have done the same thing…
