Before we blow right into April on some icy March wind, it’s time to open the Runfessional. Because it’s always good to greet a new month with a clean soul….and soles, am I right?. Let’s get started.
Our weather here is still more wintery than I’d like and I runfess I may be to blame. A couple of weeks ago I decided to put away my cold-weather running hats. I’m not sure what I was thinking because as soon as I did, we were back to polar temps and driving snow. Let’s just say the winter hats are back in circulation.
I runfess it was super fun to see so many friends and athletes I coach finally run the Tokyo Marathon. After waiting literally years, I was glad it all went off without a hitch. I got an email from the World Marathon Majors talking about lapel pins and commemorative coins. Upon further reflection, I remembered I did indeed receive some sort of pin when I got my 6th star in London. I runfess I have no clue where it might be. I also perused the commemorative coins for a moment, thinking they might be a cool thing to have. Then I saw the $100 price tag and decided I don’t need them.
Speaking of “don’t need” I runfess I finally donated some of my race medals. They sat in a heap in the pain cave waiting to be hung for far too long, so clearly they do not “spark joy.” Other than a medal from a local turkey trot that I’d never even bothered to take out of the package, most of them were from virtual races, which I don’t even do anymore because who cares? Not I.
I runfess I’ve come to really enjoy running with Matt Wilpers of Peloton fame. While I don’t always love his music, there’s something about the way he speaks that I find soothing and encouraging. I feel a bit like I’m cheating on Susie Chan, because she’s my fave, but I can run with Matt too, right?
While I’ve been a Wordle and Quordle fan for quite some time now, I runfess I’ve added the NYT daily crossword and the Blossom word game to my daily shenanigans. They’re good for the brain, right?
Ok your turn: What do you have to runfess? Do you play any daily games?
Wendy says
I do the daily NYT Spelling Bee! I’m addicted to it and won’t give up until I hit the Genius level. Obsessed much? I tell myself I am staving off dementia. lol
Yes, I donated those virtual medals as well. Except for one that I got during the pandemic–it’s a good reminder of what we went through during that time!

Yikes on $100 for the coins! Luckily here most of the shorter races don’t give out medals (although some do) and any virtual races I’ve done I’ve declined the medal.
This morning it is decidedly Winter, and there was a dusting of snow yesterday, but there might be 60s (for a short time) next week and I hope they’re right!

Susie and Matt are both amazing! I don’t do too many running classes but love them for others. It is nice to have choices! I couldprobably get rid of some of the medals I have as well
Michelle says
I’ve got a bunch of virtual medals too – where did you donate them? I like the idea of donating vs. just throwing them out.
I am a fan of Matt too for the reasons you mentioned, though I do struggle with his music choices – a little too much country for my liking lol. I wish I could just have his encouraging voice in my ear 🙂
Marcia says
Michelle my local Fleet Feet has a bin from Medals for Mettle. I donated them there.
YES to too much country for my liking! That is my issue with Matt as well!
Debbie says
LOL on causing winter to stay by putting away your winter hats too early. Bet you won’t ever do that again! 😉
Wow, that’s a high price for those world majors coins. If I’d done the WMM I would have passed on them, too.
Jenny says
Yes, you definitely tempted fate by putting away those hats! Hopefully you’ve learned a lesson for next year : )
Where do you donate old race medals? I mean who would want them? I have a bunch that also apparently don’t spark joy (they’re sitting in a bag in my closet.) I usually take my donations to the Goodwill store but I can’t imagine them wanting old medals.
I would say your brain’s in pretty good shape if you’re doing all those games every day. I used to do Wordle but lately have fallen out of the habit.
Jenn says
Oh, those pins are fun! That’s a lot, though! I usually love commemorative things but sometimes it’s too much. I wanted to buy a Philmont belt buckle for A for his trip this summer, but they were $250!!! Nope. He can get a hoodie.

The weather??? What the what! I heard there were tornadoes & massive hail in Iowa today. I hope my car is still waiting for me at the airport (with all the windows still intact). I was on a Wordle streak, and just realized it’s been awhile… hmmm, I need to resurrect that routine.

Crazy weather. I wire a wool beanie and gloves yesterday.
I have way too many medals. I only care about the big races. I need to donate the rest.
Catrina says
I wish there was a way I could donate medals! I just throw mine away. Although if I had run all Abbott Majors, I’d definitely keep those!
I do the Wordle every day with my Dad and sister. We challenge and tease each other on our “Wordle chat” – it’s great fun!
