The title of this post pretty much sums it up how I feel. There’s a sadness about August, because to me it signals a slide toward the end of the year. I do love fall and the holidays, but still. Sigh. It was one of those progressively exhausting weeks. By Friday I could not get up. I blame work of course, but also the stress of back to school and the anticipation of Thing 1’s return home from Portland.
Monday: Walk 4 miles, Bike Bootcamp + Tunde Arms
Tuesday: Walk 4 miles otherwise rest
Wednesday: Walk 4 miles, Trail Run 5 miles + Lower Body Strength
Thursday: Walk 4 miles, Rest
Friday: Walk 4 miles, Strength + Barre for Core
Saturday: Walk 4 miles, 5 mile track & trail medley
Sunday: Walk 4 miles, Heavy Strength
I’m first noticing now that I only ran twice this week. Oh well. I’m going to blame the first day of school for that. There’s a front and a back entrance to the high school and in their infinite wisdom, whomever is in charge of working on the railroad tracks, decided the first week of school was a good time to do that, making the rear entrance of the school and where Thing 2 parks, inaccessible. I (reluctantly) agreed to drive her this week. When you make the student body of a high school with 5,000 kids use just one entrance, traffic chaos ensues. What is typically a 10 minute drive became an hour long odyssey. Before I got home though she texted me to say she forgot her iPad, so yet another trip to school was in order. The struggle is real.
In other news Thing 1 arrived home on Friday night, with quite a Nike shoe/apparel haul in tow. Nike kindly also offers a shipping service so there’s even more to come. I can’t even. She had the most amazing summer in Beaverton. Never have I ever heard of an internship quite like it. Let’s just say the Nike culture is to work hard and play hard.
Thing 1’s project was to create a proprietary pricing tool and present it to the powers that be in week 9. She was given a mentor and a peer coach and put on a global finance team. Of course she nailed her project and presentation. Amazing. Internships have come a long way since I was one for CBS News back in prehistoric times.
I’ll leave you with my favorite container. I followed the formula of “thriller, filler and spiller” and combined a fern, white impatiens and yellow tuberous begonias. I love the way it came out and it’s been looking great all summer long.
How was your week? Are you sad at this time of year? Did you have a college internship?
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

Hah, yes, August is the Sunday of summer! I hope to savor it before diving into fall.
I’m so glad Thing 1 had a good experience this summer. It really does sound amazing — even without all the Nike gear.
Ugh on the mess getting Thing 2 to school. Did it get better after the first few days?

I’m sad right at the moment because we’re having another stupid heatwave (longer, not so hot, but not very much cooler and so many days) and I’ve only run twice this week for a total of 8.2 miles, I have ankles like footballs and I’m miserable. We have a 48% chance of rain tomorrow and the temps will come down but only in the afternoon/evening – arghhhhhh. Anyway, well done to your daughter, sounds like great work and a good experience all round.

YOur flowerpot project looks stunning! Well done! The Nikey internship looks like a winner! Our oldest had an internship with Alcoa (Quad Cities) for two summers, which lead her down a great path for interviews and job offers following her graduation. Congrats to your daughter on all her successes!!!

Love your container & congrats to Thing 1! No, I didn’t do an internship but probably should’ve.
I hear you on the stress and things piling up! At least I don’t have to run around for my kids, I’m sure that has to be tiring (and bittersweet as it slowly comes to the finish line).

That is so fantastic that your daughter had such an amazing internship. I have been kind of turned off by Nike in the last few years and hope that they are working on changing their culture. Hey, maybe we can get internships there next summer! LOL I had an informative but not so exciting internship in a psychiatrist’s office in college

Oh that school drive situation sounds painful! Sounds like your daughter had an amazing internship – definitely doesn’t sound like any of the “lively” internships I had with financial services firms LOL.
Love your container – such a pretty mix!

Congrats to your daughter on completing what sounds like an amazing internship. As a health and PE major, I student taught, but did not do an internship.
Your begonia, impatiens, fern container garden is gorgeous!

Such a cool experience for your daughter, she’s very fortunate to have that!
Your flowers are so pretty 🙂

I love the airport pic!
Considering you couldn’t get up, you still did well on your Friday workouts! It’s not easy if you have so much going on with your daughters, besides work and other stuff.

I feel more sad in October, when things really change! I love August and September, altho August has been misbehaving. WTH happened this weekend?
You must be so proud of M! What an amazing experience for her. And I’m sure you are enjoying the shoes and gear!

Yes, I used to get sad this time of year… then I moved to Florida and solved that problem!
Your story reminds me of the year my daughter started kindergarten. They decided to re-pave the street in front of the school… starting on the first day of school. It was absolute chaos. WHO IS IN CHARGE OF THESE THINGS??? Anyway, yes… those school dropoffs can really screw everything up.
Your daughter’s internship sounds incredible. SHE sounds incredible! What an experience for her.

What a dream internship.
And yes it is sad to be in August. Why does the summer go so fast?
The drought has done a number in my plants. I just bought some replacement hanging baskets. They’re in sale now.

Summer is my least favorite season so I have to admit that I’m actually never sad to see it go. Then again I don’t have children so I don’t have to deal with the back to school stress so I’m sure my opinion is somewhat skewed.
Haha – I love your airport shenanigans! I hope that your daughter got a good laugh out of it 🙂 It’s awesome that she had a fantastic internship experience. I can definitely see Nike being work hard play hard, but the perks are super sweet!
