I’m back from Portland and settling into a summer routine. While I’m sad our time having Thing 1 at home has come to an end, I am beyond excited for her. Before I get to the Portland shenanigans, here’s how the week in workouts went:
Monday: Travel Day, Rest
Tuesday: Walk 2 miles, marathon of work
Wednesday: Walk 2 miles, Run 4 miles + Strength
Thursday: Walk 4 miles, Run 3 miles + Core
Friday: Walk 4 miles, Strength + Core
Saturday: Walk 4 miles, Trail Run Summer Solstice 5k + 2 miles
Sunday: Walk 4 miles, Heavy Strength Father’s Day celebration
The news flash here at home is we got some blistering heat this week. Think 100 degrees with a 115 heat index. It felt like a freaking furnace. Poor Ozzy wanted no part of walking. Cooling his little belly in shady grass was all he was down for. Who can blame him?
Portland
So Portland was amazing, and stressful all at once. It poured rain pretty much the entire time I was there. Driving when you’re not sure where you’re going and having it rain torrentially at the same time is not my idea of fun. Then there was the delay. Because airfare is so dang $$$ lately, I opted for a Sunday night red-eye for the trip home. Before I even left Thing 1’s house, my flight was delayed, then delayed again. I had to have the rental car back by 10pm so I got the car refueled and headed toward PDX. My 11:46 flight turned to a 1:15am flight. Then it was pushed to 1:55. I got on the standby list but that seat did not materialize, no shock there. United offered me a 6am flight but at that point going to a hotel wouldn’t get me much as I’d have to be back in a couple of hours anyway. To make a long night short, we finally left PDX at 2:30am which got me to Chicago around 8:30am. It was a long night in the airport, followed by fitful, airplane sleep, which is pretty much worthless. I was toast.
All that said, I’m absolutely thrilled for Thing 1. She’s renting a house with two other Nike interns. It’s in a cute neighborhood with restaurants and coffee shops just a block away, as well as a nice weekend farmers market. Their commute to Nike WHQ is 20 minutes and one of the girls has a car so there will be carpool action, and also the public transport is great.
The Nike campus tour was amazing, all 300 acres of it. Each building is named after a Nike athlete and I spotted reserved parking for the likes of Andre Agassi and Galen Rupp. Thing 1 will be working in the Serena building which is the newest on campus, and has not yet been dedicated. Serena will be on hand for that. Can you even?
I’m doing my best NOT to call her after work every night to get the play by play but let’s just say they’re off to an amazing start and there’s already been an encounter with Phil Knight.

Arms & Upper Body Sculpt. With summer on our doorstep, I get tons of requests for workouts that tone and tighten up the arms. Your wish is my command. Grab your weights and meet me over on YouTube. This one had my triceps speaking to me. Loudly.
Shoutout to my friends at Balega who sent this first installment of ambassador goodness. I’ve been a Balega ambassador too many years to count now and I have so much love for the brand and all that they stand for beyond their amazing socks.
Runfession Friday Linkup
Believe it or not, it’s time once again to join me in the Runfessional. See you this Friday!
I’ll leave you with this pic of the setting Strawberry Moon.
Happy Father’s Day! How was your week? Did you get a piece of the heatwave action? Ever been to Oregon?
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

It sounds like M is going to have an amazing experience! I love hearing about everyone’s internships–a few of my patients are also doing some really interesting things this summer. One is a content creator–I could use her help, lol.
Looking forward to hearing more and catching up over lunch!

Sounds like your daughter is going to have an amazing time! I feel like it always rains out there. Ugh to the travel nightmares. Is it time for the runfessions again!? See you there

When I was in Minnesota last summer there was a torrential rain storm while I was driving and it was terrifying. I had never seen that much rain come down that fast so I can relate.
It sounds like your daughter is going to have an amazing internship!

Ugh on the travel woes!!
And too bad about the weather.
I’ve never been to Portland but have been to Seattle for a conference (pre-runner days).
Yes on the one day heat wave but I was inside all day… now it seems like fall.

Your daughter’s internship really sounds fantastic! Now if all tracks looked like that one, I’d have a much better attitude about running laps in circles, LOL. Sorry about your long day (and night) of travel. We had all the heat and humidity here as well…my hair has been in a permanent “up-do” in an attempt to avoid the humidity hair syndrome.

I’m sorry about the delay in the airport, that’s always so stressful. Glad your daughter is already settling in so well.
We did get warm, but not anywhere as hot as the Midwest. For which I am grateful!
I’ve only been to OR once, as a shore excursion from a cruise. We has plans to run a race there in 2020, and I was very excited — we all know what happened to that.

What a horrible flight experience! There’s no way you could get a decent night’s sleep on that one, ha!
I admit that I had to google Phil Knight. I had no clue he was the co-founder of Nike. Your daughter will have a fabulous time at that campus – so exciting!

I can’t get enough of that track! Amazing! Your daughter is going to have a great summer!
So sorry about the flight woes. We just booked a trip to CO to visit our daughter. United was going to be $1100 per person, so I went with Frontier. Even with all the add-ons we saved a few hundred dollars, but we do have 7 am flights each way. Between hotel, rental car, and Rover, our long weekend is going to cost more than a week at a resort!

I’m so so jealous you got to run on that track! It’s gorgeous.
Bummer about the torrential rain and ugh on the flight issues…that is so tough! I’m glad you eventually made it home and I hope you can catch up on that sleep this week.

No, I’ve never been to Oregon! That’s exciting- i would be lurking around, trying to meet Galen Rupp. My son is also gone for his music festival in Tennessee, and it’s sad and quiet around here! But like you, I’m excited for him.
That flight home sounds BRUTAL! As does your weather. I hope you have a calm and more restful week. I’ll try to check out your arms video- my triceps could definitely use some attention!

Chuckling at the heat wave, and the pic of Thing1 in long sleeves. I’m sure that didn’t help either going between extremes. Glad she’s settling in so well. Boo on your return flight.
Team Ozzy in the heat.

The airlines industry is a mess. I could tell you stories, but yours sounds truly awful. Glad you got home and congrats to your daughter. I have always wanted to run on that track…what a great experience.
Liz Dexter says
Wow, your daughter is going to have an amazing time! Good for her! I didn’t realise other people’s planes were messed up – our airports and airlines laid off all their workers during lockdowns and now can’t cope. I’m glad we’re not planning to go away until the autumn!
Jenn says
Oh, I understand how bittersweet that can be! I am sure Thing 1 will have the best time and the best experiences! Sorry about all the rain. That does sound super stressful 🙁
Michelle says
What a fabulous opportunity for your daughter! How cool would it be if she were there when the Serena building is dedicated!
Your travel woes trying to get home sounds just awful. Sadly I think it’s going to be the norm more than the exception this summer.
