Summer slipped away and fall blew in this week, complete with seasonably cool temps! It felt kind of good to snuggle up in a sherpa as I enjoyed my morning coffee. With a few days break from kitchen renovation activities, I loaded the first part of the week with activity. I knew I’d lose the use of our gym the moment the workmen returned. Here’s how the week played out:
Monday: Walk 4 miles, Bike intervals, upper body strength
Tuesday: Walk 4 miles, Run 3 miles
Wednesday: Walk 4 miles, Lower Body Strength + Core
Thursday: Walk 4 miles, Trail Run 3 miles
Friday: Walk 4 miles, otherwise rest
Saturday: Walk 4 miles, Run 3 Miles
Sunday: Walk 4 miles, Heavy Strength
Running in cool, fall weather felt pretty great. Still I kept my miles low. Maybe I’ll nudge them up next week? We’ll see.
Kitchen Progress
Still nothing to see here….but soon…hopefully!
The roads in our neighborhood were paved Tuesday. I’m so grateful they did the part around our house on the first day. Our new countertops were delivered and installed promptly Wednesday morning. After a week of “downtime”, our usual kitchen crew resumed their work on Thursday. Besides the countertops, this week’s highlights included having the kitchen plumbing and dishwasher hooked up. WIN!
Our cooktop has been here (in the garage) for awhile but the countertops needed to be installed first, so I scheduled the cooktop installation for Saturday. Sadly the installers were a no-show, which was a total bummer. I hit a wall mentally. It felt like I was in the homestretch of a marathon and someone pushed back the finish line a couple of miles. Ugh. Now it looks like this reno will take a full 6 weeks. There’s not much left to be done besides the cooktop installation: a little trim, a bit of crown molding, cabinet/drawer pulls in the mudroom, paint, lighting, some shelves that showed up in the wrong size and backsplashes. We’ll get there….eventually.
All the Feels for Berlin
The best part of Berlin may have been navigating it with my partner in crime in tow. We had a freaking BLAST taking planes and trains from Chicago to Copenhagen to Hamburg, to Berlin and then to Poland. Amazing Race has nothing on us, just saying.
Seeing everyone’s Berlin Marathon pics this weekend gave me all the feels. I can’t believe 4 years have slipped away since I ran it in 2017. Getting there was super challenging no thanks to the bankruptcy of Berlin Air, but it all worked out in the end.

Home renovations are the worst. The disruption is really stressful. I hope you get those last things done so you can get back to normal. Looking forward to seeing the finished project!

Has anyone, ever, done a kitchen renovation where everything went smoothly? Seriously, it’s always stories about people not showing up or bringing the wrong thing, or something else going wrong- every. single. time. What is the deal with that??? I’m sure your patience is wearing thin.
ANYWAY! I just went back and read your Berlin recap. It sounds amazing!!! I love race recaps, especially ones where circumstances were not ideal but you persevered and finished anyway. I can see why you’d be nostalgic over that one.

It will get finished and yes, they never ever go to plan. How about the time the guy painting ours brought his SMALL CHILD to our house randomly when he came back to finish off?!
I re-read my ultra recap when I was telling a friend about it who was doing the full ultra – brought some tears and memories!

To be honest, I was pretty surprised that the Berlin Marathon still happened as it seems like some of the larger Fall races have been moving to virtual.
That’s such a bummer about the no show on Saturday 🙁 Did the installers at least call to explain/apologize?

I remember you going to ‘Berlin I cannot believe it was 4 years ago! Glad you got those races in pre-covid, Good luck with the kitchen hope they get there this week

Always something with home remodels…I swear those HGTV shows are lying when they get things done in like 3-4 weeks. No way!
I did Berlin way back in 2013- feels like forever ago! But it was my first international and the memories give me the warm & fuzzies too. We spent the whole time in Berlin- went to EVERY possible museum, ha! I would love to go back and do it again and maybe visit Poland afterwards!

I am very happy that fall has come! Running now is easier.
Great memory of Berlin and beautiful photo. I ran the half in Berlin only ….. 20 years ago!
Sometimes I watch the photos of my races: I cannot believe how the landscape has changed.

Glad your renovations are back on track! I can’t believe its already been 4 years since you ran Berlin. I think it would be so cool to do an international race one day!

Sorry about the installers’ no-show – what a bummer! I’ll never understand why home renovations have to be so stressful – what is wrong with some of these sub-contractors?! Hope things get back on track quickly.
Fall weather is starting to roll in and I couldn’t be happier!

I totally identify with the reno issues. We may see the end Wed!!
Yup I re-read my recaps esp if I am repeating a trace. But mostly for nostalgia purposes.
Love the fall temps but bring back the daylight hours please.

Ugh, the reno stress continues. I was thinking of you as I scrolled through so many Berlin posts on Insta. Your comparison to the Amazing Race was spot-on LOL I reread a lot of my archived blog posts, especially the race recaps 😉

We had a friend head out to Berlin! I rarely read my recaps, unless It’s a race I run a lot & I’m using it to write a new recap — which obviously hasn’t happened in a long time.
Sorry about the halt on the reno. It happens, unfortunately, it’ll be worth it in the end, but it’s still super frustrating!
Catrina says
Haha, I still have a debt note from Air Berlin. Once the bankruptcy process is over, we might get a refund for our two tickets to Miami that we lost.
Awesome that you ran the Berlin Marathon in 2017! I have never done it, but I’m considering it for next year.
Jenn says
Ugh! Renovations can take forever!
I love reading back on old race recaps (mine and others’). It’s like old friends.
I am not sorry to see summer go.
