Here we are, mid-September already. How’d that happen? This week the kitchen project that had been clipping along so nicely ground to a standstill. As of last Thursday, the workmen are no longer showing up. Yes, it’s a total buzzkill but it’s not their fault. Before I get to that here’s how the week in workouts went. Running is still very much on the backburner these days.
Monday: Walk 4 miles, otherwise rest
Tuesday: Walk 4 miles, Run 2 miles, Metcon Workout
Wednesday: Walk 4 miles, Run 3 miles
Thursday: Walk 4 miles, Lower Body Strength + Core
Friday: Walk 4 miles otherwise rest
Saturday: Walk 4 miles, Trail run 3 miles
Sunday: Walk 4 miles, Heavy Strength, Bike intervals
Running felt pretty darn good this week, but I’m continuing to keep things low and slow so that strained muscle that’s been so annoying has plenty of time to heal fully. With no races on the horizon, there’s no reason to press my luck now.
According to our contractor’s plan, this week was supposed to end in the completion of our kitchen renovation. We had some progress early in the week: Our shiny new fridge and double oven were installed. The workmen got the cabinet trim and baseboards in and then Wednesday rolled around.
Nothing to see here…..yet!
What I hadn’t told you is that plans have been in place all year long to rip up and repave the streets in our neighborhood. These plans have been a moving target for months. The dates have changed no less that four times. The “actual” start date for the road project turned out to be Thursday, 9/16. While the roads are under construction we cannot have any work trucks or deliveries. Sigh. So the crew that worked on my kitchen so diligently for the past month moved on to another project for now, and my mostly but not completely done kitchen sits and waits. No plumbing, no dishwasher, no cooktop, no countertops. Sigh. I knew it was moving along too perfectly to be true!
Silver Linings
While having a kitchen project stalled before it’s done is a total buzzkill, it is nice to get a break from having workers here all the freaking time. It’s also nice to be able to do laundry and have access to the fridge without traipsing out to the garage for food and drinks! I’m also using this time to make a little headway on mitigating some of the prolific dust that is basically everywhere. Note: The road project is perpetuating even more of it. Crazy times.
The road crew left us with a delightful “rough grooved surface” covered in gross “fresh oil” for the weekend. I am hopeful they’ll get to paving bright and early Monday morning so our kitchen crew can resume by mid-week. One can hope anyway.

Ah so close but so far on the kitchen remodel. Hope they are able to get back to it this week. All of your fitness projects sound like they are keeping you busy in a good way! Hope that calf continues to heal up. Thanks for linking up

I know all about road construction dust!!! Just this week, I had the windows washed and I needed sunglasses once they were done. I can’t believe how dirty they were. What a shame that it affected your renovations, tho. Hopefully, it’s short-lived!

No counter top no sink no water no dishwasher. Standstill here too. Ugh.
Silver lining. 5k next Sat. Half marathon and road trip the week after.
Kimberly Hatting says
Silver linings have been my jam in recent years. Those are things WE have ultimate control over 😉 That’s a major buzzkill with the road construction interfering like that. YOU are a walking goddess! Does the OzMan get to come along for those?
Catrina says
Oh wow, Marcia, talk about bad luck!
The good news is that you have a good crew – at least you know that they will be back and finish the job.
How do you cook with no plumbing? Can you use the sink in a nearby bathroom?
So nice that you have a nice new fridge and don’t have to go to the garage for everything!
Coco says
Ugh! I hope you’re on their priority list when the road is done. They’re repaving some roads on our bike route and I hate riding on those grooves! It’s lovely when it’s fresh and smooth though.
Jenny says
Omg that’s crazy- what horrible timing. How are you managing to cook through all this? I’m glad you’re able to find a silver lining! When I saw your blog post title I thought I should have named mine something more uplifting like that, instead of “Blarg,” ha ha. It’s important to be able to look on the bright side! And on that note, glad your running is feeling good- that’s important!
Michelle D. says
Well, that timing stinks! Hopefully, your construction crew will be back at work by mid-week.
Good to hear that running is feeling good. You’re doing an awesome job getting all that walking done!
I just got an email about the beYoutiful challenge – now that I know you’re running it I’ll be signing up 🙂

Good job finding that silver lining, Marcia! I’m so sorry that the project got cut off at the very end. Fingers crossed for you that you got that beautiful new kitchen soon!
I definitely try to look for the silver linings, but there are definitely times that’s not easy.
Aside from that sounds like you had a good week.

Glad your running is feeling good.
A lot of walk! Walking is a very good activity to stay fit, to recover after an effort, to explore new places and to see better the usual routes taking also pictures.
Have a good week.

That is so frustrating to have your renovation stalled! I hope they can start up again soon. Sounds like a good plan to take it easy and not aggravate the muscle you pulled.
Jessie says
Ugh, I know that construction dust and its so hard to stay on top of! It gets EVERYWHERE.
I’m sorry to hear that the project was delayed, how frustrating. Glad you can see some silver linings though!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
That’s got to be so frustrating on the kitchen renovation stall, but great that they’re finally resurfacing your street.
I try to look for silver linings, but sometimes it harder than other times.
Kim G says
Ohh that’s a bummer about the repaving of the roads 🙁 We went through something similar back in May and it was also such a pain in the butt because the start date moved a few times and they could never do any work when it rained which also made the project go longer. Thankfully the road looked great when it was done!
Thanks for sharing the link for that challenge in October – I just signed up!
Jenn says
I am good with silver linings, but this is almost too much! Yikes! I can’t wait to see the final result, though!
I signed up for a race for next weekend. I’m excited for it!
Liz Dexter says
Oh no, sorry to hear this! My husband’s block of flats freeholders decided they wanted to upgrade the lifts just when we bought this house and wanted to move his stuff out. We ended up having to live in a big house with just the stuff out of my storage unit for a few months while we waited, as it was so much more expensive to be moved without the lift! How do they know?? Hope it’s resolved soon.
Cari says
They’ve been paving around here and so much dust and grime and gross.
Hope leg healing continues to go well
