Well hello fall! While I’ll never wish summer away, I’m very happy to see you and I hope you stick around awhile. Old man winter is the guy who tends to stay way too long. As September fades away, it’s time to open up the Runfessional. Starting a new month with a clean soul and soles is always a good thing!
I runfess I haven’t been wearing my Garmin. Mostly because it’s dead. Not dead, dead, just dead because it hasn’t been charged….since I returned from Hood to Coast. In the chaos that is our kitchen renovation, I runfess my charging cord got swept away in the mess. I know it’s here somewhere….I just need to dredge it up.
I already told you how much I love our…well the Caveman’s…new infrared sauna. I haven’t been able to use it as much as I’d like, because there’ve been workmen here all the freaking time. Remember the Murphy Brown show with her almost live-in handyman named Eldon? I feel like that, except most days I’ve got three guys here. I runfess I stole away to the lower level recently and was happily baking away in the sauna, when not one, not two, but all three guys tromped downstairs to do something or other. It’s not like I sit nude in there or anything but still, it was super awkward. Ugh.
With all the home renovation going on we’ve found ourselves on some mailing lists for new home owners. I runfess it’s kind of weird to get “Welcome to the Neighborhood” mailings and coupons from the likes of Home Depot and Wayfair when we’ve lived here for 20+ years.
Tokyo was hands-down the most physically challenging of the Marathon Majors for me. Thanks to COVID, now it’s become the most logistically challenging for overseas runners.
Did you hear the Tokyo Marathon’s latest announcement? They’re moving (again) the “locals only” race they’d planned for October to next spring and the original 2021 race is “canceled”. I suspect that means overseas runners who were in for 2020, 2021 or 2022 will not have a chance to run until possibly 2023 or 2024. I runfess once again I am thanking my lucky stars I was able to finish my 6-star quest in 2019. I have no idea if I’d be capable of staying on pace enough to be ahead of the time cutoffs that far in the future and my heart goes out to those who are caught up is this mess.
Ok your turn: What have you to runfess? Do you ever run sans Garmin? What’s the longest you’ve lived in one place?
I’m also linking up with Darlene, Michelle, Renee, Jenn and , for Fit Five Friday. Join us!

I mentioned on my post about Shalane’s plan to run all 6 majors this fall. Kinda curious how she is going to do Tokyo?
Yes, having workers in the house is a major pain. I’m sure you’ll be glad when they are gone!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
The Tokyo Marathon sounds like a mess. I’m happy for you that you were able to get it completed before Covid.
Ugh on having workers in your house for so long. And yes, I remember Eldon from Murphy Brown!

You probably know I run almost all the time without my Garmin. Of course, I have it with me on race day, and for long runs (to monitor my splits, but mostly to track the mileage with the GPS)….but for the other 90% of the time it sits on the computer desk (fully charged LOL). The Tokyo Marathon IS a mess. I feel so bad for all the would-be Tokyo peeps left hanging. Yes, your timing was spot-on finishing the Majors when you did. Well done 😉

I guess it depends on how you define “one place”. The longest I’ve ever lived in one house was in TX, 17 years. The longest I’ve lived in one state is definitely NY — in 3 different cities, 2 different childhood homes — on & off for 34 years (the TX stay was sandwiched in between, and a couple of other states, too).
I runfess I don’t really follow races anymore. I do hear things now & again, like a former co-worker of Mr. Judy’s is on his way to Berlin, apparently.
My Garmin went bonkers yesterday. I think it’s yet another thing I need to replace because this isn’t the first time that’s happened, but it’s the worst time. A story for another day.

That whole Tokyo situation is just crazy! I feel for anyone caught up in that waiting game.
I remember Eldon 🙂 I’m sure the workmen thing gets old fast – you must be getting close to the finish line, right?

I had a chance to go to London for the marathon this year but it just seemed like too much risk. I still haven’t done Berlin or Tokyo and at this rate that may never happen. Sigh. Oh well. I’m wondering what Shalane will do.
Are you thinking of manning the blogger cheer station for Chicago or staying out of dodge? I’d love the support but understand if you skip it this year!

having workmen in the house is always annoying but you will at least get to enjoy your new kitchen soon. Enjy that infrared sauna it is nice. I might be lost (or at least not remember anything for weekly run down) without my Garmin and strava info. Thanks for the Runfessions!

I think one of the hardest things to wrap my head around is that everything has become so complicated. Races are complicated. Life is complicated. Enjoying your sauna is complicated. It’s exhausting.

Yes, it’s incredibly lucky you were able to finish your marathon majors when you did. Who ever would have guessed that 2020 (and beyond) would become such a mess???
I agree it’s hard to relax and do anything when there are people working in your house. I can see why you haven’t had much sauna time! Hope they finish up soon.
Catrina says
Oh wow, sitting in the infrared sauna when three workmen marching downstairs sounds like a comedy show!
My friend has an infrared sauna and she sits in there naked (maybe being naked in a saune is a European thing?). Imagine how long she would have had to wait for the workmen to leave to get out!
Hope it’s all soon over and you can enjoy your home alone again.

If I don’t wear my Garmin I run through well known routes with the timer I used when the Garmin didn’t exist.
Now races are complicated here too: less participants and in many cases only local runners.
Enjoy your sauna.

Yes so lucky to have completed the majors. I feel lucky to have run NYC in 2019…it’s back so many restrictions – not the same.
I hear you on repair men…. The end may be near – TuesdaY???
Rarely wear my Garmin but at least my Apple watch record my steps.
22 years on LI and now 21 years in Delmar.

I feel naked without my Garmin, so I’d tear the house apart to find my charger! I lived in the same house growing up for 16 years. Since we got married we’ve moved a few times to be closer to whatever school our kids were attending.
I’m so glad you got to complete the Majors!
Zenaida Arroyo says
How did I miss that you have an infrared sauna? That is awesome!! The whole thing with the Tokyo race is a mess. I do feel for those runners that have been trying to run it since last year.

Eldon! Murphy Brown was so good, but should not have been rebooted.
Boo on lack of sauna access and lost charger, but yay coupons
