It was another chaotic week where running (what’s that?) was closer to the back burner than I would have liked. I’m still wary of the strained muscle so that’s another reason I’m keeping everything low and slow. As far as Hood to Coast goes, it is what it is. I’m bringing my sexiest pace and planning to have fun. Here’s how the week in workouts went:
Monday: Walk 4 miles, Run 3 miles
Tuesday: Walk 4 miles, Strength & Conditioning
Wednesday: Walk 2 miles, Run 4 miles
Thursday: Walk 2 miles otherwise rest
Friday: Walk 2 miles otherwise rest
Saturday: Walk 2 miles, Bike Intervals, Upper body strength
Sunday: Walk 4 miles, Run TBD
You probably know by now that we’ve been in the kitchen reno process since January. Due to disappearing contractors, lumber shortages, and every other excuse in the book, the project has been in super snail mode. On Tuesday evening our contractor told us they’d be here Thursday morning to start kitchen demolition. Wait. Say what? That gave me a whole 24 hours and change to completely empty the kitchen and mudroom. To add extra excitement, know that the Caveman was in Atlanta this week so it was just me tackling this mammoth task while Thing 2 was in school.
Cabinets….
…and more cabinets
The workmen did indeed arrive Thursday morning, with mudroom cabinets in tow (yay!) and the kitchen cabinets were delivered later that same day. Do you hear the angels singing? Oh they are! The accent tile for the backsplash also made an appearance, as did the flooring. It’s like renovation Christmas morning around here.
As I type, the kitchen and mudroom have been stripped bare (old appliances, cabinets, countertops and flooring are gone) and I’m hoping the installation of the new floor will start Monday. The adventure continues!
Boston Marathon Spots
A few of my friends and athletes I coach, who barely missed the Boston qualifying standard for this year’s race got a last minute invitation to run Boston. I’m speculating that some who qualified chose not to run?? Maybe some overseas runners are unable to travel? What do you think? Would you run Boston in person given the current state of COVID?

I’ll leave you with this pic from one of my morning walks. It may be hot as Hades and muggy as all get out but the sun rises and sets have been especially beautiful lately.

So glad your kitchen project has finally started! Yikes on the short notice, though! I remember when we had EVERYTHING in our basement.
I don’t think Covid concerns would keep me from Boston, but travel restrictions would — especially if I had to quarantine at either end of the trip. Of course, it’s not a real question for me.
Enjoy HTC!

Running hood to coast wil be a blast.
Kitchen renovation no so much. Mine is starting soon. Ugh.
Deborah Brooks says
So glad that your renovation is finally happening! You will have a blast at hood to coast. Just do your thing and don’t worry about your pace. Those relays always workout just fine. Have a great time and can’t wait to hear all about it

My kitchen renovation is on the way ….. terrible days will come! Of course my wife made the decision for the change.
Have fun at Hood to Coast, all the best!
Catrina says
Yay! Kitchen cabinets! My goodness, you must have a very large kitchen, Marcia! Nice to see things moving along.
There are so many Covid travel restrictions for Europeans to enter the US… it wouldn’t surprise me if many runners from Europe had to cancel.
We have the same phenonema with international races. Many spots for popular races are available due to missing runners from overseas.

We’ve done every kind of remodel, in every house we’ve lived. We did an extensive remodel (15ish years ago) that included a 2-story addition and it left our house in a permanent cloud of drywall dust for a good nine months. BTW, that’s when I learned I had a weird skin allergy to cobalt dioxide…which has traces in cement/grout/plaster/drywall, etc. You’ll sleep better with that knowledge 😉 Fingers crossed all goes well at Hood to Coast.

Great to hear the reno is finally underway! Can’t wait to see the final product.
Have fun with HTC!!

yay focusing on having fun for Mt. Hood. Can’t wait to hear all about it. Well done on the reno prep. I love your entry way!
I’m not surprised Boston had some surprise slots – same was true for NYC and I don’t think Marine Corps has sold out. The fall marathons are looking very different this year.

I’m kind of glad I don’t have to make a decision about Boston this year. If I had a qualifying time I would feel pressure to go, but I’m still uneasy about traveling and with it being such a big race. I guess more people than they expected can’t run in person! Good luck with the kitchen reno!

I can’t wait to see an “after” picture of your kitchen! Hope it all goes smoothly.
Good luck at HTC! I think your plan is perfect (to have fun.) And… there’s an upside to all that humidity- those beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Love that photo!
Jessie says
Yay for the kitchen remodel getting underway! I’m excited for you. Can’t wait for before/after pictures!
Okay, I really want to try to remember to do Runfessions. And maybe we will cross paths in Oregon! What time does your team start? My husband and I just watched a documentary on Apple + called “Hood to Coast” about the race. It’s from 2011 but was a really fun watch if you haven’t seen it!

Wow, that’s crazy fast news about getting the kitchen project moving!! Hope it’s all going well. Very exciting! I have heard about runners in our area getting a late Boston invite. I’ve heard it is due to the international runners not being able to make it. I wonder if it’s in jeopardy of going virtual again??
Zenaida Arroyo says
Wow, has it been that long since you first mentioned the kitchen renovation? After months of waiting glad to hear it is finally happening. How long will it take? I did hear of one girl that was offered a spot in the Boston Marathon. It could be that other runners are choosing not to run. I do wonder though if these Fall races will actually take place. Good luck at Hood to Coast!
Renée says
hooray for the kitchen reno!!! I can’t beleive they gave you so little time to empty out the areas though! Geez!!!
I’m always amazed that you pretty much also walk 2 – 4 miles anyway even if you don’t run so I suppose you shouldn’t worry about it to much. I ran exactly 0 miles last week ha!! sometimes life is just too much!!
I have to say for many reasons I’m glad we decided on Chicago 2022. I just don’t want to be in that mass of people. And I know Boston is smaller right? But still. And Europeans WILL have a tough time traveling there, as well as others I bet. I still need to go through some red tape to get Ron to be able to travel with me this fall and even that is not a guarantee that he won’t be turned away at the border (it’s happening a lot!). So maybe these are reasons that people are cancelling Boston.
So excited for HTC!!! it’s finally about to happen!!
Jenn says
I am so excited for your kitchen reno! Ours is on hold because of the increased costs of materials and supply chain issues, so I am hopeful we can proceed next year. Good luck with it all!
Hood to Coast is going to be great. I always love having fun at those types of events.
Kim G says
Hooray for the start of the renovations process! I just know that your kitchen is going to look amazing once it’s complete.
That’s awesome about Boston! I hope that they will offer more spots to those that just barely missed the cutoff. good luck at Hood to Coast!
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Good luck at HTC! I’m sure you’ll have a great time.
Yay on the cabinets! Boo on the short notice. That is, indeed, a mammoth job to tackle on your own.
Maybe even US residents just don’t want to travel with COVID on the rise? We still don’t want to get on a plane to see my MIL & it’s been FAR too long.
