Before I get to the week’s goodness…and not so goodness, here’s how my workouts shook out. Notice we heavied up our walk miles a few days, because Mom Nature gifted us GORGEOUS summery weather (hello 80 degrees) only to be rained out and back to 50 later in the week.
Monday: Walk 6 miles
Tuesday: Walk 6 miles, Trail Run 4 miles
Wednesday: Walk 6 miles, Upper Body Strength + Core
Thursday: Walks rained out, Bike 30 minutes, COVID Vaccine
Friday: Walk 4 miles, otherwise rest, well work
Saturday: Walk 4 miles, Run 4 miles ahead of the rain
Sunday: Walk 4 miles, 20 minutes Bike Tabata, Heavy Strength
There wasn’t much running happening here this week but I was more than happy to test out the Velocity Nitro shoes sent to me by Puma Running. They’re lightweight yet cushiony and designed for ALL running surfaces. Interesting, right? Plus who doesn’t love a good pop of color? Stay tuned for a full review.
This week our high school opened for all-day, every day, in-person learning. I got a little misty after I dropped off Thing 2 that first morning back. The long months of social isolation have taken a real toll on her and I know she’s not alone. The full first day from 8am- 3:30pm was a bit of a shock to her system but she loved it and NEEDS to interact in-person with her peers. I know it’s almost the end of the school year but I finally feel like I officially have a high school Freshman now.
All that said, the COVID positivity rate in Chicago continues to creep up. Sigh.
After jumping through hoop after hoop, I finally scored vaccines for the Caveman and I. We got the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine and the process went off like clockwork. I was worried about side effects because a friend of mine went down for 24 hours with fever, chills and vomiting, so I’m beyond thrilled to tell you I experienced no side effects other than I was a tad more tired than usual that night. I didn’t even get the headache or injection-site soreness everyone talks about. Is it really working??
Tick time has come early to Chicagoland. We literally had frost just over a week ago and this week I pulled 4 ticks off of Ozzy. So gross! I gave him Frontline when we went to Florida in February but did not repeat in March or April (until now) and I’m paying the price I guess. It’s been so dry here I’m really surprised ticks are already an issue.
See my post about Tick Prevention for Runners here.
Kitchen Update
Well, suffice it to say, our kitchen reno project officially went over to the dark side. We paid a designer a retainer and we were going back and forth on our merry way getting to the final design. We got there a few weeks ago, chose all the cabinets, floor, backsplashes and finishes….and were awaiting a final price so everything could be ordered….and…….crickets. I’m pretty sure our kitchen guy ghosted us.

So happy to hear about the vaccine. I had the same feeling when everyone warned me about dude effects. None.
Good luck with the kitchen. It makes me nervous. I haven’t started and I have no idea if I can afford what I want to do.
Rain is on the way. But thus week was awesome.

** side not dude lol

Congrats on getting the vax (without side effects yay)!!! I’ll be getting #2 tomorrow.
School here was in person starting last fall, though at first the kids had alternating days. That was really the best of all worlds since they were “half normal” but we still got extra time with them. In person school took a pause in November when cases spiked. The way it was presented was that so many kids and teachers were in quarantine that it just wasn’t practical to continue in person. Then in January everyone was back full time.

Woohoo on the vaccine. So glad you had no side effects. I was sleepy and had the arm soreness, but nothing that really even gave me pause, although I did move around an upper b ody workout.
Poor Ozzy looks so sad

I’m totally loving those pretty Pumas! We need to refill Max’s flea/tic meds. He’s only outside when we walk him or he needs a minute of “backyard relief.” We’re not in a heavily wooded area, so it’s not too big of a scare this early. Glad you scored your vax!
Deborah Brooks says
Yay for scoring the vaccine! I love walking more this time of the year. I need to get the hubs on board! So happy to read that your daughter is back to school. New shoes are always fun love that color! Your kitchen sounds super frustrating hope that gets worked out!

Well, our weather was more Spring-like than Summer-like — and that might be a good thing! It was still glorious though.
Ugh! 4 ticks! Just put frontline on Bandit a few days ago. Knock on wood, we’ve never found a tick on him — yet.
Contractors are the worse. Good luck!
I must say I’m just a bit envious of people who don’t have side effects from their vaccine, mine really seems to be the gift that keeps giving. Congrats on getting yours! My sister also had J&J this week (finally!) and had no side effects either.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Our numbers here keep going up too and it feels discouraging. I just try to focus on the fact that so many people are getting vaccinated. I hope your daughter has a good experience being back at school!

So much good news! Yay on the vaccine and Thing 2 going back to school full time. I know it’s not many weeks, but I’m sure it will make a big difference.
Huge “boo” on the kitchen. I hope you can leverage some of what you’ve already done when you find a new person to work with. Ugh.
Wendy says
Congrats on the vaccine! Matthew got the J&J and had no side effects either. But here’s the good news (sort of): while his girlfriend and housemates all have COVID, HE DOES NOT!!! I’m so happy about that. Plus I needed him to come home to play nurse to Cocoa while I worked on Friday.
I can’t believe you already found tics on Ozzy. I’m not ready for all that yet.
Michelle D. says
Great news on the vaccine – and even better that there were no side effects!
I hope all goes well on the return to school front – we’ve already had a hiccup just 4 days in…sigh.
Why are contractors such a nightmare to work with?! I hope you can get your kitchen project back on track.
Jenny says
I’m envious! I wanted to get the J&J but ultimately had to take whatever I could get (Moderna.). Now you’re all done! Who knows why some people have side effects and some don’t- like so many things about Covid, it’s a mystery. Maybe it’s the same reason some people get really sick from the disease and some don’t.
I’ll be it was really hard for “Thing 2” to go back to school- it’s been a year! But it’s a good thing they have the opportunity to go back now- that way, everyone can (hopefully) start next year off normally. My son has been virtual all year (he’s a senior and officially OVER IT) and my sixth-grader has been going in person since September. To be honest, I think it’s been a waste of a year for everyone- I feel sorry for the teachers. There’s going to be a lot of catch-up next year!
Jessie says
Really happy to hear you got the vaccine and no side effects! That does not mean it didn’t work 🙂 You’re just lucky! I’m nervous about shot #2 of Pfizer soon.
Ugh, that is terrible about the designer ghosting you! Wow. So frustrating. I hope you can get it sorted out soon.
Zenaida Arroyo says
Poor Ozzy! That is great news about the vaccine. I know everyone is different but I find it interesting that some have an effect while others to do not. Are you serious about the designer ghosting you? That is terrible.
Renée @runlaugheatpie says
Summery weather? What’s that??
So glad you were able to get the vax for you and the Caveman. Oh and I know this whole thing has been hard on the kids. I mean adults too but we’ve been through life experiences and learned coping skills along the way to get us through life situations. Kids need interaction with other kids, they need activities that help develop their skills and their minds! I feel so bad for teens and younger. I bet it was a shock to the system but glad she got to go to school again!
This core workout looks good – I’ve got my workouts planned for the week but I don’t see why I can’t throw this one in!!
How do you walk all those miles in one day? I might do 10K once or twice a week but I’m usually around 4 on average. Not comparing, just in awe really!
Liz Dexter says
Hooray for the vaccine! I’m really pleased for you. And the back to school. Not great about the kitchen. I have sent what we want to our potential bathroom guy and he’s not getting back to me …
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
That’s great that the kids are back in school. My kids are too, but they said they weren’t excited about going back. I guess living the sweet life of lounging around in their rooms all day will be missed! Hooray for getting vaccinated! There are a lot of opportunities to get the J&J vaccine around here. I hope your kitchen guy didn’t bail on you. Seems like a lot of workers are like that though – when we got our pool liner replaced it was weeks until we heard from him and had an empty hole in our backyard!
Denise says
Oh the kitchen remodel nightmare…I still have flashbacks from ours.
Yay on the vaccine. We’re still trying to get an appointment for my hubby. Hopefully soon.
Jenn says
I’m so glad J&J didn’t give you any trouble! That’s great news.
A will go back to brick and mortar next year. He is actually almost done with virtual school for 7th grade, which is so crazy. His peers in regular school have another month and a half to go.
Ticks are nasty!
