I runfess this feels like the shortest month ever. Did we not just do runfessions like yesterday?? Time flies and it is indeed time once again to open up the Runfessional so let’s not waste any more time and get to it.
I runfess I was intrigued when ACTIVE had an article about tips for “older” runners. The picture had a grey haired, grandma and grandpa-type couple heading out for a run. When I read the article though, the “older” people they used as examples were in their early to mid 30’s. Oh wait, there was one “older” woman who was the ripe old age of 43. Sheesh.
I runfess I’m not sure what to think about all these virtual races. Looks like I can buy into the virtual Chicago Marathon and get the medal and shirt for $40. Is it the “real” medal and shirt? Should one get the “real” medal for a virtual race?? Is it sad when the Boston Athletic Association has to bundle their races and sell the “finisher” experience for $120? It kind of is.
…and sometimes I create workouts that kick my own behind.
As a former editor, I’m kind of prickly about typos and proper grammar. But as a novice YouTuber, I runfess I’ve let some visual “typos” fly. Like a workout where I inadvertently skipped a rep.ย I figure if nobody calls me out on it, do they even notice? And no. I’m not going to tell you what video it is. Or are there multiple blooper reels??
With no real end in sight as yet for COVID, my MIL has already canceled Thanksgiving at their house this year. I runfess I’m not sure whether that means we’re free to make alternate plans? And if we did make alternate plans, what would they be? Or are we on the hook for a ZOOM extravaganza?
Okay your turn! What have you to runfess? Would you make alternate Thanksgiving plans? Or is that rude??

I had not even thought of Thanksgiving, but we’ll probably go ahead with the usual. It’s a relatively small gathering with our five, my parents and my sis (and her dude). We have plenty of room so we don’t all have to sit at the same table. That could change in the next two months, though (sheesh…two months? that’s not too far off…). “Older” runners in their 30’s…on what planet? ๐
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I have no idea what we will do for the holidays. My parents are local but everyone else lives out of state, which makes it tricky. We are hoping to figure out a way to see my in-laws at some point because now we haven’t seen them since last Christmas.
I don’t like having to pay high prices for virtual races. I can understand how some organizations already put in the money for races that were supposed to happen in person. But now I feel like we should get much lower prices and very little (if any swag). I just run them for fun and to have something to work towards.
Wendy says
I’m really not thinking that far ahead. Who even knows what tomorrow will bring? Seriously.
I runfess that I’m only running my virtual races because i don’t have to pay for them.

I talked about Thanksgiving not happening long ago. Even if my family wanted to come here, quite frankly I wouldn’t be comfortable with it. Our house is definitely too small to social distance. Some of the younger ones have been traveling and getting together with friends. I don’t think my mom would actually be comfortable with it, either, she keeps saying she’s not going to outlast the pandemic, but at the same time she’s extremely cautious. And I do think she’ll outlast it. She’s tough!
At least they’re working on a plan to allow indoor visitation as it gets colder. Should be interesting.
Some YouTubers do do blooper reels. ๐ And it’s pretty normal to forget a rep (or even a whole side — although no, I haven’t done that yet). YouTube has been very difficult for me, but OTOH, I had a comment on a video the other day that made my day. It’s so rare to get comments (or maybe just when you have so few viewers).

We usually host Thanksgiving and I really look forward to it. Both of my kids will be coming home. My parents want us to host it outside w space heaters. Well it could be 60 degrees or 30 degrees so not sure that is going to work. OY another gift from 2020. I have not realized that I am the old person ๐ It is a weird realization indeed. Thanks for the runfession!

Fitness publications just donโt get it! Luckily we are old enough and wise enough to not need to rely on them! LOL on the YouTube bloopers. I imagine they are much harder to correct than blog typos. The only ones that really bug me are if an entire set is skipped โ like the โotherโ side.
Our Thanksgiving is usually pretty small anyway, so it could proceed as normal. The bigger debate is whether my daughter will come for Christmas break ….

We are probably going to do Thanksgiving with my MIL, but we’ve gotten really good at strict quarantining for two weeks leading up to visits with family. We’ll just lock down again. But I admit I look forward to the day when we can actually just see family without having to think about every exposure leading up to it.
Erica @ Erica Finds says
I know – the “old” 40 year old runners make me laugh.
We’re likely going it alone for Thanksgiving and have to decide about visiting CA for Christmas. I’m guessing we’re not. First time ever for Neal and first time since 1999 for me ๐
I feel for the race companies but I’m only doing virtual stuff that’s for charity or very inexpensive.
Michelle D. says
Ouch on the definition of “old” runners – seriously?!
While I’m not much for the whole virtual thing – I’ve done a few charity events. I actually did sign on the the BAA challenge and am looking forward to it.
I have no idea what the holidays will look like…as Wendy said, I really can’t think that far ahead. Such strange times…
Kim G says
Okay…so on what planet is 43 old age? Are these people insane??
I am doing 2 virtual races next month (10K and half marathon) only because both are cheap and the money goes to charity. I don’t think I could do a virtual marathon, especially for any of the WMM races – it would feel odd to me.
Wow – I haven’t given any thought to the holidays this year. I hope that you will be able to enjoy a nice low-key Thanksgiving at home. Maybe you can zoom with family while eating dessert?
Darlene S Cardillo says
we have been doing family gatherings at my MILs. Her birthday is Sunday. Will do the same for Thanksgiving.
Darlene S Cardillo says
if that is old.I am ANCIENT.
It does bother me that you get swag for virtuals… not the same if not on the race course.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
I’m in complete denial about Thanksgiving and haven’t figured out what we’re going to do. We usually host extended family and I just don’t see how we’re going to do that, but at the same time, I don’t want to think about canceling so I’ll just sweep it under the rug for a few more weeks.
Based on that quote, for me, old age is 77 years old. LOL
Have a great weekend and thanks for the linkup!
Catrina says
I think among non-runners there is this perception that you need to start running at 16 or else all is lost.
I just read this in Runner’s World: “A recent study reported a worrying fact: people felt they were too old to start exercising if they were 41 or over”.
Fortunately, this article explained that science proves that many who start running in their 50s are soon as fit as those who have run all their lives.
Have a good weekend, Marcia!
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
I runfess that I’ve gotten very lax on typos in my old age of 45. For something that’s professional and published, sure, but for a personal blog I feel that the perfect is very much the enemy of the good. I’ve gotten to the point where I won’t edit a post after I’ve published it unless it’s a major goof. We’re not even close to thinking about Thanksgiving yet, but we will most likely do our normal get together without the high risk members of the family present.
Jenn says
I think I am writing a post about socially distant holidays for the moms blog. We are opening back up, but I know that a lot of people have questions about how to get together safely. We don’t usually do anything big, so it’s no big deal to host outside.
Laurie says
I’m with you on the “older” runners thing. I have already clicked on links for tips for older runners and found all the examples were at least 10 years younger than me. Ugh! Come on! I want to be running well into my 80s.
I have been thinking about Thansgiving already too. Not sure what our plans will be. I guess we’ll have to see what the COVID situation is. It’s tough to make plans ahead of time just now.
Liz Dexter says
I think we’ve already accepted we won’t be doing family Christmas this year, even. I am feeling a bit funny about some of these virtual races I’m seeing here. I’m sticking to the club’s ones and then fundraising ones, so I don’t just feel I’m buying a medal somehow.
Cari says
Love your leggings!
We unofficially cancelled on Thanksgiving and Christmas which was #asexpected, but still weird.
