It’s a new month in our altered universe. While many of us stay in place, time slips away like always. Let’s sit down for a moment over coffee and catch up. Although there has been some iced coffee in my world lately, I’m going with a steaming cup of Starbucks House blend with half and half and of course collagen. I’m linking up with Deborah and Coco for the July Ultimate Coffee Date.
Over coffee I’d tell you the Caveman (who is having a birthday TODAY) is back to working in his office two days a week. On the days he works from home, he joins Ozzy and I on our crack of dawn walks as well as our after dinner ones. It’s a great time to catch up over a couple of miles. On a less positive note, he has been really pushing the envelope with his ruptured triceps recovery. The doc was not happy to hear he isn’t wearing his brace as much as he should.
Over coffee I’d tell you our gym reopened this week, however, after being members for 10 years, we canceled our membership. With his arm incapacitated, the Caveman won’t be able to really use it for the foreseeable future, and I’m not comfortable being in a gym just yet. It’s a luxury we really don’t need anymore.
Over coffee I’d tell you that when the Donna 26.2 went virtual for their race NEXT FEBRUARY, I started to doubt racing will happen in the first half off 2021. Will Tokyo 2021 take place?? What about the Olympics?? How many people even want to put themselves in large crowds like those? Is this the end of racing and large sporting events as we know them?
Over coffee I’d tell you I got a survey from the World Marathon Majors asking “what else” I’d be interested in. Virtual Majors was one of the choices. Is running a World Marathon Major virtually anywhere near the same thing? Or does it feel like you’re buying yourself a cool medal? Once again I have to express how damn grateful I am to have wrapped up my 6-star journey in 2019. The universe was most definitely smiling upon me.
Over coffee I’d ask you where you got your mask(s). Clearly the need for masks is not going away anytime soon so I’ve been trying to stock up for the family. The first ones I ordered from Etsy were good but not great. My second order was delayed and then canceled. I placed a third order and am hoping for the best. The really cute patterns always seem to be sold out though.
Fireworks over Biscayne Bay in pre-Covid times.
Over coffee I’d ask you if you have any fun July 4th weekend plans. We’ll be very low key here. I’m sort of trying to come up with something fun but so far, other than grilling and ZOOMA’s Firecracker 5 virtual run, I’ve got nothing.
What would you tell me over coffee?
I’m linking up with Meranda and Lacey for Friday Five.

I just left a comment on Kim’s blog about virtual races and medals. I have been avoiding most virtual races that give medals with the exception of that Home half and the Uncanceled project. I just don’t feel like it’s the same thing as a live event. Maybe i need to let that go, in light of this relentless virus. Man, what a downer. It’s really an interesting time, isn’t it?

Gyms are still closed here. So are malls.
I wish my hubby liked to walk. At least he plays tennis.
No fireworks so it doesn’t feel like July 4.
I still have my fingers crossed for a half in Oct. wondering what the future of big races is.
Coco says
The way are case numbers are headed now, I don’t think large races will happen at least through the first half of 2021. Even if there is a vaccine by then, it will take time for people to get it, and for it to take effect. If virtual races motivate you, the ones with a small fee would at least put something into the economy. On the other hand, people who are really concerned about the environment don’t like the medals.
I got one mask from InkNBurn and one from Farm To Fork Fondo — both are made of heavy-ish material similar to their shirts. I’d order from both again if I needed more. I also have a cotton one a friend gave me. We also have a box of disposable ones, which are lighter.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed virtual racing this year, but hard pass on virtual world majors. One “solution” for racing that I keep hearing about is elites only races, and that’s not what our sport is about, so I hope that doesn’t happen. Happy birthday to the Caveman!

This week the organizers announced that they are going ahead with the Zurich Marathon on 6 September.
I was speechless. This marathon involves thousands of people – it would only take one infected person to create a superspreader situation.
I had signed up for this race and had organized a group of 16 people to participate in the relay race, where 4 people share the marathon distance.
There is no way we are participating in this race. We will lose about USD 1’200, but I’d rather stay safe.
Deborah Brooks says
wow virtual races are already being planned in 2021?? Marine Corps still says they are having their race here in Oct but I can’t see it happening. I got the inkburn masks that I like and just wash them. Still using disposables as well for grocery shopping. Ugh I guess they are here for the foreseeable future. I am not going back to a gym anytime soon either! Thanks for linking up today have a great weekend

Gyms are set to open here next week and I’m very much on the fence about returning to OrangeTheory.
It’s hard to think about virtual races carrying over well into 2021! I’ve been very meh about the whole virtual race thing, and cannot even imagine running a virtual marathon! I run the races for the experience of the race itself not just to collect the bling.
I have ordered a couple of masks from Etsy, which were ok, but I really like the ones I got from Ink n Burn. I’ve got a couple I ordered from Old Navy which had cute patterns which should be arriving today. Crazy to think we need a wardrobe of these things!

Happy birthday to your hubby! But shame on him for not wearing his brace. Mine would do the same thing. Men!
Our gym opened last week too. I am not ready to go back just yet but not ready to cancel either. I am just going to see how the summer goes and whether gym-goers are careful.
I guess now that you have completed the Majors, you will have to run a marathon on each continent. Antarctic Marathon anyone?
Chocolaterunsjudy says
Definitely low key here, too. And definitely would have no interest in a virtual marathon!
I’ll be doing a mask review next week, I think. I liked the one I got from Boco, and it came quickly. The Athleta ones finally came (it took 2 months). Haven’t worn them yet but I think they’ll be good (and they’re oddly reasonably priced). The one I got from Etsy was cute, but too big for me.
Men. so hard to get them to do the things they know they ought to do. 🙁

Happy Birthday to your husband!
Very interesting about the virtual options for the WMM races. Personally I don’t think I could ever do a virtual marathon – I’m just not sure I would have to discipline to do it – I need cheering from the crowds, etc.
I ordered a few masks from Etsy. I also ordered a 10 pack from Old Navy for $25 bucks. For working out, I ordered a 3pack from Adidas – they are very comfortable/breathable. Shoot me an email if you want me to send you the links 🙂

Happy Bday to the Caveman (a day late) 😉 Our oldest daughter’s bday is tomorrow…26 years! UGH…how did that happen? Yes, the World Majors blessed you rather kindly last year. As soon as I heard of Air Force Marathon, I knew I would be deferring…I’m not going to burn 26.2 miles without an actual course and finish line LOL Our weekend is pretty lo-key as well…our race was fun this morning, but no parades or cookouts or fireworks = buzzkill.
Denise @ runheartfit says
I’m so glad you were able to complete the World Majors before this pandemic. Doing a World Major virtually is like me doing the Boston marathon virtual…just not what you signed up for.
I don’t have a gym membership but I would avoid the gym too.
Cari says
Happy belated to Caveman. Glad you two have the chance to walk and talk.
I’m with you on buying a cool medal — I feel like that cheapens the majors. While I personally am not interested in virtuals unless a friend has a tie (so I did Darlene’s and will do Kim’s later this month), I don’t think the smaller non name brand races are the same issue. Also <3 the shirt for Kim's.
I've been wearing a lot of disposable masks, as they're just cooler, both the freebies and some tie die ones a friend's company makes. Reusable wise, my Seuss came from a friend whose wife sells and I bought a Zensah from an ambassador friend

I don’t think Virtual Worlds would quite cut it for me. I can knock out a virtual 5k or 10K, but after that, not so much. I was pretty stunned by the news about DONNA. I figured by next year, we would see some semblance of normal.
I got some great masks from Etsy, but I have also heard Old Navy has cute, nice quality ones.
