Here we are on the final day of July, all ready to welcome a new month with open arms. You know what that means. It means we have to open the runfessional for the Runfession Friday Linkup. Let’s do that now.
Runfession Friday Linkup
Running MCM in 2012 with one arms sleeve?? Note the orange shoes. I’ll get back to those in a sec.
Have you gotten those offers from Marathon Foto for discounts on race pics lately? I suppose this is one of the few ways to make money when there are almost zero races happening. I’ve clicked on a few links for a walk down memory lane and found a few interesting things. I runfess I wonder what the heck I was doing in the pic above with one arm sleeve on??
A few weeks ago a running coach over on Instagram was demonstrating some hip strengthening exercises. It became readily apparent that said running coach had some pretty significant imbalances going on as their knee was caving in, indicating the very hip weakness they were talking about preventing. I runfess I probed through the comments to see if anyone called it out and sure enough someone did. Now I’m wondering: Should you demonstrate something if you cannot do it properly? Would you call it out if you spotted it?
A pic of the beloved MCM shoes in earlier times.
I mentioned that we did some decluttering last weekend and some…ok many…shoes were donated. While I do not save shoes from notable races, or any races for that matter, in the donation pile were the shoes I wore for Marine Corps Marathon. In 2012. Yes, I runfess they’d been sitting out in the garage that long for almost 8 freaking years.
Also found while decluttering: Not one, not two but FOUR heart rate monitor straps. I runfess two of them are for Polar watches I haven’t used in years. In fact one watch was lost while traveling the first time I ran RnR Vegas back in 2015. The second one has a broken strap and is here….somewhere. Since my Garmin Fenix has a wrist HRM, I don’t need any of these straps, right? So I should just pitch them.
Your turn: What have you to runfess? Do you hang on to “stuff”? Do you look back on race pics and wonder WTH you were doing/thinking?
I’m also linking up with Lacey and Meranda for the Friday Five.

I have gotten a few recent race pic emails, but have declined looking at the pics. It could be a rabbit hole endeavor if I opened any of those emails. Interesting about the coach demonstrating something they couldn’t do properly…I wouldn’t call them out in a public setting, but might PM them. No sense embarrassing them (what does it accomplish?), even though they shouldn’t be demonstrating something incorrectly. I’m a sentimental dork, so I tend to hold onto things long past their “expiration” date LOL (I still have the shoes, with the timing tag, from RnR LV 201,7 cuz it was my first big race back after my surgery)

I think if I were “said coach” I would comment that I have my own imbalances, but here’s what we should all be doing to fix them and then say something like, “I’ll try my best to demonstrate it. See how my knee is buckling in? It shouldn’t be. I need to work harder on fixing that.” Everyone appreciates people who keep it real.
I got the email from Marathon Foto as well, but haven’t had a chance to take a look at my pictures.
Thanks for the linkup!

Okay, I feel so silly, but I can’t figure out how to linkup. I see that Kim was able to, but when I click on “By InLinkz” it takes me to all of my previous linkups and tries to direct me to create my own linkup…

Debbie click on the blue “ADD LINK” button at the bottom. 😀

I had fun looking through my Marathon Foto pics! Definitely not planning to by any but it was fun to see them again. As for the person doing the exercises, I think if you are demonstrating something and you are aware that you are doing it incorrectly you should at least say that. Like “the goal is to keep your knees above your toes but as you can see I am struggling to do that” or something. Don’t teach people the wrong way to do it!
(After I wrote that I saw Debbie’s comment above! I like what she said too!)

I wouldn’t call them out or PM them. I see examples of this all the time. It seems like so many people think they are experts without any coaching experience or certification. Pretty amazing!

I don’t hold onto running shoes, I either walk in them, donate them, or put screws in them for winter. I runfess I do have one Newton shoe — somehow I must’ve donated one once. I kinda hate to throw it out but what can I do with it?
Clothes can be harder. I’ve been on a mad decluttering kick all years. I’ve lost count of how many sweeps i’ve made through my clothes. Still too much so the show must go on!

That’s funny about the coach! I think I would tell her privately.
I have a similar predicament when I’m behind a stranger who is obviously running in the wrong shoes… I have the urge to give them unsolicited advice and I always have to hold myself back. But if I know the person well, I would tell them immediately.

I don’t think someone who puts themselves out as a coach should demo something with poor form. The value of a demo is to see how it should look when done correctly.
I have a bag of running shoes ready for donating when my running store accepts them again, but they are only from the past year or so!
I do have all my old Fitbits and such. I need to take those to an electronics recycling event some day I guess.

I’ve gotten a few of those emails for race photos but I runfess that I just delete them, lol. Usually once my sneakers are worn out I drop them off at my local DSW store. They donate them to people in need and I get rewards on my account so it’s a win-win. Although I do runfess that I still have my sneakers I wore for my first half marathon. I don’t wear them but I just can’t part with them even though there are from 2014 – yikes!

I probably have about 5 pairs of shoes that I can currently donate. I thought I would go through and declutter more these past few months but it has not happened yet. I am halfway through my closet. Yes there are a lot of people out there demonstrating moves incorrectly-see it all the time. Not sure I would call them out but might not pay too much attention to them for advice. Thanks for the runfessions

We have quite the collection of chest straps. I runfess that never have I ever worn one and I don’t think I ever will. My husband and I both have wrist heart rate monitors in our Garmins, I guess we keep the straps for the remote possibility that one of the kids might want to use them. And honestly, the straps are the least of our clutter problems. I’ve been good-ish about getting rid of old shoes but I still have the first pair of “real” running shoes that I ever bought. I keep them in the trunk of my car in case I would ever need beat up shoes on the road but the truth is that I do have a sentimental attachment to them.

Thanks Marcia! The “add link” button never showed up no matter how many times I refreshed last night and early this morning. I finally decided to start fresh on a new tab and there it was! 😀

Ugh – the people with bad form and people giving bogus nutrition advice kill me. All the pyramid scheme coaches… the worst. They should be called out for sure!
I hoard stuff. I’ve been working on donating, giving away and throwing away stuff, too. I find random straps and chargers everywhere!

I’ve been chipping away at decluttering little by little. It’s a great way to be productive and now is the perfect time to do it. I always find old wires and pieces of tech, but I’m always afraid to get rid of them because what if I forgot what I needed them for? Same goes for old keys lol!
Michelle D. says
Sadly I’ve seen a number of “coaches” out there demonstrating some very bad forms.
So much decluttering needs to happen here! I scheduled a donation pick up for late next week to force myself to get it done!
Thanks for the link up 🙂
Denise @ runheartfit says
I don’t really hold on to old shoes. I have 4 pairs right now that I rotate through but usually I only have two (not counting my trail shoes).
I would expect someone who is demonstrating something to do it with correct form. One of the many reasons I will never do an exercise video.
MCM Mama says
I have a pile of old Garmins LOL. And so many shoes! I need to declutter the corner of our basement to start the “go to college” gathering. I really thought I’d accomplish more while I was stuck at home…
