We’re in the midst of an incredible stretch of gorgeous summer weather. Think bright sunshine, blue skies and 90+ degree heat on the daily. Yes, that’s too hot for running, but I won’t dare complain. The idyllic summer weather sharply contrasts to all the unrest in this country right now. Staying active continues to be a coping mechanism for me. Here’s how the week in workouts went.
Monday: Walk 4 miles. Rest day
Tuesday: Trail Run 4 miles + Walk 4 miles
Wednesday: Strength-Balance-Mobility + Circuit Workout
Thursday: Walk 3 miles, Trail run 3 miles
Friday: Walk 4 miles, Rest day
Saturday: Walk 3 miles, ZOOMA Firecracker 5 mile virtual + Lower body strength
Sunday: Walk 4 miles, Run 2 miles treadmill + Upper body strength + Core
Banging out the Firecracker Virtual Run
I ran the ZOOMA Firecracker virtual early to beat as much heat as possible. 76 degrees was still no picnic.
Naughty birthday boy is not wearing his arm brace.
The in-laws were here for the Caveman’s birthday. The big news there is MIL fell off of her new treadmill while walking on it. Thankfully nothing is broken and she came away with just a few bruises and scrapes but still. Yikes!
July 4th was low key. Grilling and chilling was the order of the day. All municipal fireworks displays were cancelled in Chicago and the surrounding areas, however it seemed like a TON of people took it upon themselves to enjoy their own. I’m a super lightweight when it comes to alcohol consumption but I did participate in our wine o’clock celebration.
I didn’t get any fireworks pics this year but I did snag one of the full moon rising. This one’s known as the “Buck Moon”. Did you see it?
Up in the Air
Is it me or do you feel like everything’s kind of up in the air right now? Covid-wise, Illinois is in decent shape right now, but as I watch some states blow up with more cases, the doubt creeps in. Doubt about school. Will kids return to school or are we in for more remote learning? Georgia Tech announced they’re returning to campus learning in August, however not all the professors are onboard. I totally get it. Some friends are taking a gap year or attending a community college. I get that as well. Thing 1 will be in an apartment this year so even if she has to learn remotely, she decided she wants to head to Atlanta to do it. We won’t be thrilled with paying out of state tuition for remote learning, if that’s how it shakes out, but who knows at this point? The social isolation is really taking a toll on these kids.
When Life Gives You Strawberries
When life gives you strawberries, you make this Gluten-Free, Low-Sugar Strawberry Crumble. Oh man was it good! I’ll share the recipe tomorrow so be sure to stop by.
New on Youtube
Full-Body Strength & Cardio Circuit Workout. I runfess this was created as a way to get in a quick workout when it’s too hot to run very long. It requires minimal space and little to no equipment so there’s no excuse not to try it.
Finally, I’ll leave you with this pretty girl who was not shy at all.
How was your week? Any virtual races? Fireworks? Strawberries or Blueberries? Would you send your kids to school?
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

Happy Birthday to your hubby! That’s scary about your MIL but glad that her fall was not more serious and that sh is okay.
I can relate to what you said about feeling like things are up in the air. While Connecticut has good numbers, we’re so close to NJ and NY that I am constantly worrying about another wave coming this summer or Fall. i just keep my fingers crossed that people continue to wear masks and practice common sense while out in public.

Yes, everything is up in the air right now. Our numbers have gone up, and though no one has said so, I feel like an awful lot of people went on vacation right before. The state is doing a big push to get kids back in school this fall, but I have a feeling that as soon as one teacher or one kid gets sick that will come to a screeching halt. But still, this won’t last forever. Either we’ll figure out how to live “with” the virus or they’ll come up with a vaccine.

Strawberries!!
We’re doing ok in upstate NY. Just started phase 4. Hope it stays that way.
Just neighborhood annoying fireworks.
And heat. Humidity. Storms. Oh my.

We are in the same situation w my son returning to Indiana next month. He also has an off campus apartment. Sounds like some classes will be remote others in person.I feel like he has been so isolated since March that we can’t just keep him locked in the house. I feel you! Looks like you had a really good and active week. Those daily walks are nice aren’t they? Thanks for linking! Looking forward to that strawberry recipe!

Yes, everything feels so unsettled and up in the air. Things here in MA continue to go well, but the way things are playing out elsewhere is freaking me out.
Scary about your MIL – any idea what caused her fall? Good thing she wasn’t seriously hurt.
Wendy says
Matthew and I talked about the fall and if they go back to full remote learning, he may take a gap year to work and establish residency. Can’t be a chemistry major without being in the lab! This is just a terrible time all around. But it’s all going to just disappear, right? :p
I sure wish we could get together. I miss seeing you!

Mmm. I love berry desserts. Good thing I love plain berries so much they’re usually gone before I get around to baking. In addition to everything else, I think one reason this whole situation is so stressful is because we can’t make plans — or at least none we can count on really happening. I hope Caveman had a good birthday and that MIL isn’t too sore after her fall. The trail behind your house looks so lovely!

I’m excited to see that recipe! Any fruit that ends in “berry” is my favorite 😉 I am SO glad we don’t have the stress of school/college right now. The youngest graduated with her Assoc of Arts (a year ago) and is content to keep working for now. She was planning on Stenographer school in August, but really likes her job, so we’re totally on board with things for now. I love my daily walks…they feel so good and are such a great way to either start the day, or take a break before/after dinner.

Everything totally feels up in the air…travel, future plans, races…who knows if and when they will ever happen and what life will be like. A few of my running friends don’t Boston will happen next year either. It’s nuts…
That strawberry crumble looks really yummy! Oh, no brace for the Caveman- hopefully that means he’s feeling good?

I feel you on the summer temps being a dose of calm. It’s perfect for reading in the park even if it’s not ideal for running
Glad your MIL is OK
NO virtual races, because I missed the email on the Zooma one. Oops.
My brother’s kids are much younger but he said the same re isolation, the 5 year old misses playing iwth his friends so much

The school decision is so hard! We had been planning to start Grayson in part time daycare this fall but now I dont think we are. Especially if I continue WFH I can’t justify putting him (and us) at risk of getting sick. I totally get your daughter wanting to go back to campus. It must be so hard for kids to be away from their friends and their normal lives!
Liz Dexter says
Yes on the unsettled nature of it all. We have just opened up and as someone wisely said, it’s not that it’s safe, it’s that we have enough ventilators. Ugh. So we are staying a few levels more locked down than we’re allowed to be, if that makes sense.
Laurie says
I can understand your concern about your daughter going back to school. My son is a professor at Oregon State. He already knows all of his classes will be online this fall. His smallest class is 180 students and there is just no way to socially distance that many kids. I am sort of relieved, I must admit. Thanks for sharing the circuit workout. I will give it a try!

My nephew will be a freshman this year. So they are flying from CA to CO in about 6 weeks. Not terribly thrilled by it. Then again my niece in that family flew home from CA to NYC a few weeks ago (and apparently is bored & wants to go back!). She seems fine. My heart goes out to all the younguns but could we please also knock some sense into their heads?
We had SO much rain last week. More coming, and the heat is rising too, but today was lovely!
Happy birthday to Mr. Marcia (but wear the damn brace, man!).
Jenn says
Look at that pretty deer!
Our neighborhood (and surrounding areas) put on one heck of a show. Fireworks are pretty much mostly legal here, and everyone took full advantage. Personally, I’m not a huge fan, and spent most of the night inside and cuddling Ms. Luna (also not a fan).

Happy Birthday to your hubby! I am so sorry to hear about your MIL. Glad it wasn’t serious and she is OK.
Part of me is ready to go back to school (because I don’t want to do remote learning again) but another part doesn’t want to go back either because of the risk. So many questions right now about what could happen. Do I want to put myself and my family at risk by going back to work?
I am ready for it to cool down. Definitely too hot right now.
