Our altered universe continues as time flies by. We’re halfway through the year (what?) and it’s time once again to open up the Runfessional for the Runfession Friday Linkup. Let’s get started shall we?
I runfess Runners World Magazine still shows up in the mail here on the regular and I can’t imagine how long my subscription might be. Back in the day I subscribed to RW and Running Times (the better of the two publications if you ask me) and when RT stopped publishing they credited me with more RW. But how many more? It’s been years.
Blanche the trusty road bike and I in better times.
I runfess every time I see someone out enjoying their bike on a gorgeous day or even a steaming hot day, I think of Blanche my trusty road bike, relegated to a spot on our garage wall, back tire still flat since…um…last year. That’s right I still haven’t learned how to change a bike tire and since Caveman’s arm fiasco, he’s not able to help either. Now that things have opened a bit, I suppose I could pile her into the car and get her to a bike shop for a tune up but that hasn’t happened either. My bad.
I was out with the dog the other day when a neighbor stopped to talk. She said “You don’t do that running thing anymore, right?” Say what? I told her that yes, I do indeed still run, just not terribly long distances anymore. She went on to invite me to a walking group “for older women”. Now there’s nothing at all wrong with walking OR older women because come on, I am one and I walk plenty. But I runfess I have no interest in a walking group at this time.
It is birthday season around here. Between now and the end of July, we’ll be celebrating with Things 1 & 2, the Caveman and 3 additional extended family members. That’s a lotta cake. I runfess that while I am very good about staying gluten free, birthday cake is my kryptonite.
Now that all Ragnar races and NYCM are cancelled, I runfess I can’t help but wonder wth Chicago Marathon is waiting for. Is there a snowball’s chance in hell it will take place this year?? By the looks of the irate comments on their Instagram account, I’d say they’ve ticked a whole lotta people off by not making a decision already.
Alright your turn! What have you got to runfess? Do you still have any magazine subscriptions? Can you change a bike tire?
Kimberly Hatting says
Ummm, that would be a big NO on changing a bike tire. I finally tried calling the RW number to opt-out of the auto renewal deal…and I got through. It was all automated…but I think I successfully got that done. I’ve tried many times to get through on their website to no avail. Now…I just get to wait to see if the magazines stop arriving LOL
San says
Oh no, you were invited to a walking group for older women… WHAT??? LOL (I totally understand while you’re not ready for that ;))
So funny that you’ve been receiving RW magazine without an active subscription. I’d take it 🙂

I’m getting on my road bike today for the first time this year!
I wouldn’t know how to change the tires, either.
A birthday cake or any kind of cake – I’ll eat it all.

I am really surprised they haven’t cancelled Chicago already. I mean people need to start training if it were to be held, but it just seems like every other big event for this fall will be cancelled. I know some small races are figuring out how to safely take place, but its going to be awhile before we get the hang of it enough to hold bigger events.

I am not a big cake fan, but I love pound cake — go big or go home, right? One reason I mostly ride my bike with my husband is because I can’t change a tire. I know the process in theory, but I’d have to pull up a YouTube video to do it myself, and I’lm sure there would be cussing and/or tears involved. Get your bike to the bike shop!
Michelle D. says
Funny you mention your RW subscription – I’m still receiving Women’s Running from a promotion I did years ago. Every month it shows up and I keep wondering how long this will last.
I’m surprised any of the big races still haven’t canceled – not sure what they’re thinking!
Wendy says
I haven’t ridden my bike yet this year–I admit to still being a little skittish from my crash a few years ago. I’d be fine on the bike paths, just not the roads. And it’s a big no to changing a tire–I’ve had to phone a friend–usually my husband or son–many times, lol.
Yep, still get RW. I think it’s part of my CARA membership, tho. I sure as hell don’t pay for it!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
We stopped by our favorite bike shop just to say hi while out on our ride a couple of weeks ago and could barely walk in their front door because of all of the bikes waiting to be repaired. There are weeks long waits for bike repairs because with the pandemic so many more people are digging out their bikes to ride and realizing that they need tuneups and repairs. It’s crazy!
I let my RW expire a year or two ago because I realized that I wasn’t reading it – it was going straight from the mailbox to the basement coffee table to the recycling bin without ever being opened…
Have a great weekend and thanks for the linkup!

I use to get Women’s Running and Runner’s Word magazine in the mail for YEARS and I’ve never subscribed to either of them!
Yea, I don’t understand what Chicago is waiting for either. Maybe they are trying to figure out the logistics behind all the refunds and stuff like that????
Thanks for the link up! -M

I love my bike in the summer. Admittedly, do not know how to change a flat but they will do it for you while you wait at the bike store. You still look like you run plenty to me! I still get RW but don’t find it very relevant. It really irritates me that you have to pay to read their online content even if you subscribe to the mag. I don’t see Chicago happening but yesterday MCM said they plan to go on. I don’t see how. Thanks for the linkup
Kim G says
Wow, that’s a lot of birthday celebrations coming up next month, but it should be super fun!
I am also wondering why more Fall races, especially the larger ones, have not officially cancelled yet. I’m surprised that Chicago hasn’t called it yet – I feel like they are the last WMM not to cancel yet. I am supposed to run a half in Philly in October and I’m pretty sure that’s not happening either but they haven’t officially cancelled yet.
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
I runfess that I can’t think of anything that sounds less fun than an “older women’s walking group”…I’m 45 and I walk so I resemble both of those things but the name doesn’t sell it. I just did my first group run this morning and it was SO MUCH FUN. I’ve always been a solo runner and I have been missing out. My hometown marathon made a big push that they had a plan for the race to happen and they finally folded last week. They were going to limit the race to 4000 people and do a staggered start but that would have meant keeping the roads closed all day and the city just couldn’t do that.
Darlene S Cardillo says
Yes I still subscribe to Runners World and Womens Running. Though not much is relevant to me. A habit, I guess.
I do walk a lot but not in a group.
My bike is STILL in my basement.
I runfess I want to ride it when I see someone else on one but my 1000k challenge only counts walks and runs.
I wonder if any races will happen in 2020.
Erica @ erica finds says
I’m pretty sure that Chicago is waiting for the permits to be pulled for insurance purposes. The city has only cancelled events through Labor Day weekend. Hopefully they can work with the mayor’s office to get the decision sooner. It’s better to cancel and move on. So many people have asked me if they should buy plane tickets or make reservations and I’m like… um NO. I wouldn’t go to a big city for a race right now (except here because I am here!) – would you?
Jenn says
We have a subscription to the National Scouts Magazine (Scout Life?) for little man and an anesthesia journal or two for Mr PugRunner. I don’t read magazines, so I’m out on that front.
I have no idea how to change a bike tire. I need to learn that.
It’s been so long since I’ve run with a group, I totally understand your feelings. Mr PugRunner joins me on walks sometimes, and even that can be challenging. I love spending time with him, but we each have our groove and our needs on those walks, and it can be tough to get in sync.
Denise says
I’ve changed lots of flats but it’s been a while. I need to take my bike in for a tune up.
Walking group for “older women” ! I would say no to that just out of spite (or denial). Lol
Chocolaterunsjudy says
The only bike I get on is a stationary bike. 🙂
Races are in such a difficult spot! I’ve done a couple of virtual races, mainly just races I’ve enjoyed for years & want to support. A lot of my friends signed up for all t he virtual races on a whim, and burned out on it big time. I’m enjoying doing one occasionally.
I actually do enjoy magazines, but somehow I stopped reading the few I still subscribe to. I used to read for a while after breakfast. I keep thinking I need to take a rest day & just read magazines. 🙂
Angie - Buena Vida says
Ok, I have to admit that I laughed about the whole “You Don’t Do That Running Thing Anymore, Right?” comment because its as if saying “Are you over that rebellious phase, yet?” lol. I have subscriptions to magazine but for some reason I can’t seem to get myself to reading them. I keep postponing it to when I have time… which is now, but still I do not read them. 🙂
Irma says
Older women only walk?! She probably doesn’t know that women runners just get better with age! I have resisted signing up for magazines – at least the print ones, all those fallen trees! Plus, what do you do with them when you’re done reading them? My first Spartan race was scheduled for October and has been cancelled. With the continued uncertainty of the extent of this pandemic, I seriously doubt any race will take place – too much liability. I hope you enjoy the upcoming birthdays! Also, hope your hubby is doing better with his bionic arm.
Cari says
My RW keeps coming too. I haven’t paid for it, and I tried to cancel so I don’t feel particularly guilty that they can’t get their paperwork sorted out.
LOL a walking group for older women. That sounds like the pre-party to bridge. Thanks but no thanks.
I miss my bike lately. I have nowhere to store it and a tuneup likely would be more than a bike costs, but still the idea. I should just reactivate my Citibike membership, which I’ve talked about for years.
