Happy summer! I hope you are all enjoying a wonderful Father’s Day as well. We’ll be headed to a socially distanced picnic with my FIL and then we’ll swing by and visit my dad from his balcony.
As much as I loathe running in heat and swampy humidity, summer is a bit of a novelty here in the Chicago area so I’m going to embrace it in all it’s glory. I’ve gotta give Mom Nature her props because, until this weekend when the humidity surged, we’ve had a string of gorgeous summer weather. Warm and sunny all day, but cool enough to sleep with windows open overnight. Cool enough in the morning to squeeze in a great run. Who could ask for more? Here’s how the workouts went. I didn’t note my walking miles but rest assured, they are happening.
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 4 miles + Core
Wednesday: Run 2 miles + Yoga
Thursday: Trail Run 4 miles + Arms & Shoulder Strength
Friday: Strength + Core
Saturday: ZOOMA Summer Solstice 5k (hot-hot-hot)
Sunday: Strength + Hip Flexibility
My running miles are down this week and that is by design. It’s time once again to change things up and lift heavier, with lower running miles. Of course my Garmin hates it. Ha!
I was on a roll this week. If I’m going to run this summer, I need to get back in the routine of getting myself up and out early to beat the heat…before lingering over coffee. Nailed it!
Shady trails for the win
By the time the weekend rolled around though, it was oppressively hot and humid and I took my ZOOMA Summer Solstice 5k to the shady trails. Even at 7am, in the shade and off the pavement, I was a sweaty mess. I do love the solitude though.
You’d better believe I enjoyed one of these Electrolyte Recovery Popsicles when I returned. I’m already planning on what flavors the next batch will be.
Summertime Sadness
Thing 2 had her school yearbook pickup this week. It was much like diploma presentation. We pulled up at a designated time, opened the back hatch and it was presented to the trunk. I found it odd that, while the yearbook was ready 6 weeks late, probably because the printer was closed, there was no mention whatsoever of Coronavirus. As COVID cases spike in many of the open states, its becoming clear that we aren’t near the end of this pandemic just yet. I was especially sad when the Joffrey Ballet and Lyric Opera cancelled their fall seasons in Chicago this week. Will the Chicago Symphony be next? Thing 1 WILL head back to Atlanta for school in August, however she has an extended holiday break, in anticipation of a second wave of COVID. Sigh.
We finished the first season of Schitt’s Creek and we’re still not “in” to it. It’s funny, but I’m just not left on the edge of my seat wanting more. Many of you said it takes awhile. Should we stick with it?? We started watching a series called RUN. It wasn’t my favorite at first either but a few episodes in and now I’m on the edge of my seat.

It’s gone from warm and thundery to really cold here, very confusing! It was sunny for some of our run yesterday but not as much as we’d expected. Love your summery pictures, though!

Enjoy the time with your Dad & your FIL! For the first time in a long time I am home on father’s day. And yes, I’m fine.
Very hot. Like you, though, June was mostly a beautiful month. My Yoga platform is shaded so I can still practice outside (damn ants, though). Today I pulled the plug on eating lunch outside, though. We did it yesterday & really it wasn’t that comfortable.
I used to get up so early to run, but I guess I got tired of years of that & I hate getting out there before 7 now! Guess I’m gonna have to suck it up & try to make that happen tomorrow.
Kim G says
We are 100% experiencing the summer heat here and i absolutely hate it. This is my least favorite time of the year but I just tell myself to suck it up and make it to Fall weather, hopefully in September this year.
That’s a bummer about so many things that have already been cancelled because of Covid and the fears of a second wave. 2020 is definitely one for the history books!
Coco says
Oh, wow, is it time for runfessions already?! June is slipping away quickly.
Even starting a long run at 6:30 am leaves me wishing I’d started earlier. I need my 7 am self to tell my 5 am self to get out of bed! Great balance workout. I like your low intesity strength one too!
It’s sad about the performing arts, but I think the case numbers are too high to feel safe sitting in an enclosed space with others for any period of time. But that’s just me. 😉
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
Team “don’t love” Schitt’s Creek here. I couldn’t get through the first episode, and sorry, I don’t have a lot of TV watching time so I’m not going to stick with something that doesn’t reel me in right away. I have to tease your Garmin for being jealous and giving you lower numbers for doing strength training – silly Garmin!
Deborah Brooks says
This may the summer that I actually get up early and get by ass out of bed so that I don’t melt on my runs. I can’t start complaining about summer running in June-or can I!? Thanks for linking. Hope your father’s day celebrations were nice. We just got back from seeing my parents from afar as well.
Catrina says
I love the idea of a socially distanced picnic! It’s much safer than indoors and easier to keep the distance. Nice that you get to see your dad too!
Wendy says
It was a nice week! I sure hope my race happens this fall with all these miles my coach has me running, lol! After the race, I’m going to do a strength cycle and cut back on running. I loved getting so strong like that.
Wisconsin is doing the same thing; after Thanksgiving, the semester finishes remotely. This is something else, isn’t it?
Kimberly Hatting says
Yes, it did feel like summer this week.No complaints…though the humidity did skyrocket dramatically this weekend with not much warning. At least it wasn’t snowing, right? What craziness with COVID…I’m thankful the three kids are all out of school for now (though a couple are entertaining grad school). My company has done a lot of signage for Lyric, so that’s a Chicago thing I’m a little familiar with. Bummer this COVID thing just keeps lurking. I thought Schitt’s Creek was hilarious, though a bit of a stretch in terms of reality.
Cari says
Oh solstice 5K, whoops. I’m in the run club but I am the worst Zooma-er. Zoomer?
Same here with the beautiful temps. Even today wasn’t terrible when I found a river spot to sit and read.
Met Opera and the Phil cancelled earlier this month, but NYCBallet, Carnegie went last week. I was sad. Seems like nationwide coordination, which is smart
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I feel the same way about the weather- it definitely got humid this week but after a few weeks of nice weather I’m not really complaining. I have no idea what to expect this fall. I’m worried we will see a spike early in the fall is everyone goes back to school. Definitely a crazy time!
Zenaida Arroyo says
Parents are supposed to pick up their child’s things today at school. Same procedures as you mentioned too.
I also need to make sure to get out there sooner because of the heat. I don’t have to log in till 9am so as long as I am back by 8 then I am good. Gives me time to shower, get ready, and have breakfast. Still getting out there at 7 might be too late already.
I love Fall and am hoping things will be much better but right now who knows. We’ll be back in school and that itself will be interesting.
Darlene S. Cardillo says
Summer arrived here too.
I am trying to run early. It’s easier when you working from home.
Fall races? Who knows? I’m holding my breath for a few.
Not really training. Just staying active and exploring the nature trails.
Love your trail running pics!!
Jenn says
I’ve been getting up a little later, and Im definitely paying for it in the heat and humidity during my workout times. Meh. I’m not going far enough to really drag me down yet. I’ll get around to doing better, but I’m also kind of happy that my only alarm clock is the puppy.
I just got my first batch of Fre in the mail. I’m eager to try!
Poor Thing 2. This is just so hard on the kids. I imagine our theater/dance/symphony/opera season is over, as well as everything else. Oh, except the RNC. They are making sure that happens :/
Renée says
Definitely summer temps (and humidity) here too Marcia. I kind of forgot just how sticky and blah it feels. Need to get my brain accepting the notion that runs WILL need to be earlier than I have been doing them…
I’m so curious what is going to happen with the marathon. I think they are going to cancel it. With so many things cancelling even in the fall, how on earth could they go through with it? I feel really sad though because I really wanted to go this year. We aren’t even allowed to travel to the US (well, I can officially, because I have a US passport) unless it’s absolutely essential.
I really hope things work out for Thing 1 and 2 though. This has to be hard on them in a different way than it is for us.
Michelle D. says
Summer temps hit hard here this weekend – I’m trying so hard not to whine. Your trail pics look lovely.
It’s a bummer to see things canceling for the fall – doesn’t make me feel very hopeful 🙁
Jessie says
It’s hard to think about so much cancelling for the fall and into the winter, but I am not surprised with the forecast of the second wave before a vaccine. Interesting about the yearbooks. I suppose they must have been ready to print before they could add something addressing what’s going on this year? You’d think people would actually want to look back a bit on this strange year with some sort of recognition on what happened!
I hear you on the sweaty runs! I feel like I’m a heavy sweater anyways 🙂 And this humidity doesn’t help, ha!
Those popsicles look so refreshing!
