It was another week that started out hot and ended up cool. I’ve come to realize that, like many of us, my Garmin gets cranky and rude in the heat. More on that in a minute. Here’s how my workouts went:
Monday: Rest, Walk 4 miles
Tuesday: Run 3.5 miles + strength balance mobility
Wednesday: Run 3 miles + Lower Body Burn
Thursday: Trail Run 4 miles + Arm & Shoulder Sculpt
Friday: Walk 4 miles + Strength
Saturday: Run 6 miles, Walk 4 miles
Sunday: Walk 3 miles, Heavy Strength + Iron Core Tabata
After a rocky relationship a couple of months ago, Garmin and I reached an understanding. It started calling my runs “Productive” and my VO2Max was increasing steadily. All that came to a crashing halt this week when Garmin lashed out with “Unproductive” and when pressed for more info, I was told I was “losing fitness”. Hmph. My VO2Max took a 3 point nosedive. How’s that for a buzzkill to my motivation?
I know it’s only a freaking watch but still. I runfess my confidence was shaken a bit. I know the heat and humidity are at the root of the problem. But Garmin KNOWS how hot it is and still cuts me no slack. WTH??
When the weather cooled substantially and the humidity disappeared, Garmin’s mood improved as well, giving my weekend run a “Productive” and returning two of the three VO2Max points.
Great Race Across Illinois. I’m pretty sure Zenaida and I have reached our 210 mile goal. Of course I still haven’t bothered to enter all of my runs into the website, but I did add up my miles and I think we have more than 210 at this point so go us.

A sad and freaked out Oz after his post-pond plunge bath.
Ozzy took the plunge. I was not home at the time, which is a good thing, since I’d likely have had a heart attack. Ozzy loves rushing up to the edge of the water, barking at water fowl, fish and what have you. Apparently he also found something he wanted to throw himself on and roll around in. That’s when he rolled right over the bank and splash! Thankfully Caveman was right there to pull him out while he clung to the bank with his front paws with a look of alarm on his face.
New on YouTube. Two of the most important keys to making fitness gains is adding variety to your workouts so you work different muscles and embracing rest and recovery. This Low-Impact Fat-Burning Workout is kind of an antidote to running since there’s no impact or pounding, so you’re getting a workout while your joints have a chance to RECOVER! Check it out and thanks to all who have subscribed.
Spandits! Mantra Boardies. I’ve lost count of how many years I’ve been a Spandits! ambassador. Their Mantra Boardies are pretty much all I run in all summer long. I took my newest pair on their maiden trail run this week and they did not disappoint! Through the end of June, Spandits! is donating a portion of the proceeds from their Last Call apparel to the Maine ACLU. Love that! Remember to use SPANDITSLOVE to save 10% off your first order and tell them Marcia sent you.
How was your week? Does your Garmin talk smack like mine does? What are your go-to running shorts?
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

My Garmin had the nerve to tell me, yesterday afternoon, to MOVE. Ummm…did it forget that 13.1 earlier that morning? Maybe it was just feeling lonely since I’d taken it off after said 13.1 miles. Great job on all your workouts. Poor Ozzy! I hope he wasn’t too traumatized!
Marcia says
I had to turn off that feature. Clearly Garmin is clueless on that front!
Kim G says
The Garmin is such an a**hole, lol. It should really find another word instead of “unproductive”. Congrats on completing your miles for the Great Race Across Illinois! I just signed up for a similar race for Connecticut.
Awwe poor Ozzy! He must have been so scared when he fell in but I’ glad your husband was there to save him. I bet he won’t do that again though!

I never got a “Productive” or “Unproductive” from my Garmin (I just got it for Mother’s Day), but it occasionally gives me a VO2 MAX. I didn’t know what those numbers meant so I Googled it. I think my VO2 MAX is wrong. According to my Garmin, my number is off the chart for a woman my age and I am definitely not THAT kind of runner! I am developing a love-hate relationship with my watch.
Catrina says
Nice job on the 210 miles with Zenaida!
Great that Caveman could save Ozzy, with the arm in braces and all.
I love your Spandits – I run in black ones all the time. Really boring compared to yours! 😊
Jessie says
Oh poor little Ozzy! What a cutie. Must have been something he really wanted in there!
I hate when I’m in a run, just on the first mile or so, and my Garmin gives me a “-3” performance rating. Come on, I just started! Rude. 🙂
Heat and humidity are no joke.
Great week of workouts, thanks for sharing!
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
Boo to your Garmin. Thanks goodness that mine isn’t advanced enough to tell me whether I’m productive or not, the only thing it tells me is that I should take 3 days recovery after every run so I turned that feature off in a hurry. And yay to getting your workouts in and running across IL! Now the only thing left to do is to log those miles in! I wonder if your Garmin will have an opinion about that.
Michelle D. says
I think your Garmin needs to keep its opinions to itself! Mine doesn’t offer that kind of feedback, which might be a good thing for all parties involved LOL!
Poor Ozzy! I hope he’s recovering from his scare.
I love those boardies! I’m off to check out the Spandits site now. Thanks for the code!

Thankfully my Garmin doesn’t call my runs anything – I’m sure that would play with my head!
When I started running with nasal breathing, I lost a couple of points on V02max. Then it went up one, which surprised. Then back down, which didn’t — but I thought I had some decent runs this week & it remained the same. I wish I just knew what might move it, but the truth is I’m not super hung up on it. I know it’s not all that accurate anyway.
Poor Ozzy! I’ve never had a dog that was the least bit interested in water. Quite a few months ago when we went to Chi-lady (the aborted rover lady), they had a pool, and I nearly had a heart attack when the dogs both ran across the cover!

I upped my NYS challenge from 500k to 1000k. What was I thinking?? 6 miles a day!!!
I am so glad not to wear my Garmin. It would be yelling swear words at me.
Deborah Brooks says
Hmm either my Garmin does not have that feature or I don’t know how to access it. Either way that is probably a good thing! My Garmin can mind it’s own business! 🙂 Nice mix of workouts for you this week. Super cute shorts I love all the patterns. I will check those out too! Thanks for linking up and have a great week ahead

Haha, my Garmin knows not to speak back to me. Of course, maybe it’s because I have the low end Garmin. He does tell me to walk every 4 minutes, which I need to turn off. I’m actually enjoying the HR training. I was amazed at how hard my effort was just hiking up those trails at Devil’s Lake today! Validation, right there!
Glad Ozzy was able to be rescued. Cocoa sprained her ankle this weekend. That’s whole other story…
Cari says
Poor pup. Glad he’s OK
Way to go to you & Zenaida!
Oh those Spandits are amazing. Elizabeth and I were just talking about summer shorts with the lack of skirt sports. I tried to order one last pair but they were out of my size. I think these spandits are calling to me. We know I love my crazy patterns. These will “match” with tie dye, right?
Liz Dexter says
I’m glad I don’t have a fancy enough Garmin for all that! And love the shorts. I have a huge variety of running bottoms but love my two-layer shorts for the proper summer.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I am really not sure how well the features on my watch are working, so I dont really pay attention to them. Sometimes after a hard run it will tell me I need like 2 hours of recovery time, and after an easy run it will say I need 3 days of recovery. Who knows! Congrats on reaching your goal for your race across Illinois! My race across MD challenge starts today.
Zenaida Arroyo says
You crack me crack with your Garmin!! I only used to wear it for running and now wear it everyday instead of my FitBit watch. One day it did say to “Move” and yep I got up and walked a bit. Haha!! I have the 225 so I don’t know how techsavy it is and how much more it will tell me.
Poor Ozzy! I am sure all of you were terrified as well.
I love my Oiselle long rogas. I use those for running but switch to the pocket joggers for racing. The best!
Now go log in those miles so we can get our certificate!!!
Coco says
Yeah, Garmin is a jerk sometimes! The worst was when it had me “detraining” last summer, but it was right since my thyroid was messing with me. I am trying to accept that everyone is not going to be “productive” – nor should it be, since I’m not training for anything and just trying to stay ahead of the stay-at-home snacking. 😛
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
LOL – your post title was click bait for me! I’ve only had my new Garmin for a week now, and I was super excited about my positive feedback. Then I saw my training got a side arrow. What?? I don’t like where this is going!
And phew, I thought your doggie died. So glad he is OK 🙂 I’m guessing he is not a swimming dog?? My cat fell of our catwalk handrail this week. She got quite a surprise when she rolled over from her nap and fell down to the ground! (unharmed, but shocked)

I laugh at Garmin all the time. Unfortunately my app also always resets so every time it does that my watch starts yelling at me about new PR’s. Because the history in the app gets wiped… ha!
well done to you and Zenaida!
Poor Ozzy 🙁 It is a good thing you didn’t witness it!
I love your spandits!! Always so colorful!
