One of my goals this year is to eat more fish and learn how to prepare it at home. Sitka Salmon Shares is playing a large role in helping me bring this goal to fruition. Their fish is responsibly-caught by small-boat, family fishermen in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. It’s blast frozen in Sitka then delivered right to my door. Hands-down, it’s the best fish I’ve ever tasted.
My June share was filled with a combination of Black Cod and Sablefish. I’d never heard of Sablefish so I did some research and learned it’s pretty much the same as Black Cod. Haha!

How are Cod and Black Cod Different?
So glad you asked! While cod is white and flaky, black cod meat is white and fatty, with a buttery, velvety texture. Black cod contains the most heart-healthy Omega-3s of all fish, salmon included. Who knew? It’s an excellent source of high-quality protein, and it’s loaded with calcium, copper and other minerals as well.
I love me some Cod for fish tacos and fish and chips (I’ve not made my own fish and chips yet but stay tuned), but I wanted to try something different. Something light and summery. So I decided to grill it and enjoy it with a nice fruity salsa. Here’s what I came up with:
Fish prep was easy
I brushed the non-skin side of the black cod with olive oil and sprinkled on the seasonings. I put it skin side up in my grill basket and cooked it over low heat for 4 minutes before flipping it over for an additional 3 minutes. Very quick.
I made the salsa ahead of time and put it in the fridge so the flavors would have a chance to develop. Oh goodness! Not to brag or anything (I’m totes bragging) but I outdid myself. This was SUCH a tasty combo! The sweet and sour flavor and crunchy texture of the salsa complemented the mild, buttery fish perfectly. If you wanted you could pile the whole shebang right inside a taco shell and call it good…just saying. An added bonus for runners and active folks: Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which helps expedite recovery and reduces the inflammation responsible for DOMS. Here’s the official recipe:

I didn’t know that black cod contains the best Omega 3 of all fish! I should get some and stop swallowing the Omega 3 supplements.

Cod is one of the fish that I do eat and I am also trying to eat more of it. I used it for fish tacos last night and they would be great with your pineapple salsa! I am also thinking of adding fish to meatless Mondays-what do you think?
