It’s been yet another crazy week. Will things ever settle down? Not for awhile I suspect. While we had some frosty mornings this week as well as lots of rain, by Friday, a warm humid front rolled in, and it was evident that winter is finally releasing its icy grip on our area. Before we get to everything else, here’s how the week in workouts went.
Monday: Rest + 4 miles walking
Tuesday: Run 3 miles + Yoga + Walk 3 miles (MRI w/Caveman)
Wednesday: Run 6 miles + walk 4 miles (Dr w/Caveman)
Thursday: Lower Body Strength + Arm & Shoulder Workout
Friday: Run 3 miles + Strength Balance Mobility + walk 4 miles
Saturday: Run 7 miles + 4 miles walking
Sunday: Heavy Strength + Core Tabata
Despite lots of rain, the trails were pretty spectacular.
About Those Walking Miles
I told you a couple weeks ago that my Balega Impi team is running virtually to South Africa. This week Zenaida invited me to team up with her for The Great Virtual Run Across Illinois. Between us we have 30 days to cover 210 miles. I’m good for roughly 20 miles of runs per week but never have I ever mentioned my walks, because I don’t intentionally walk for fitness. I walk more for function (dog walk/run) and enjoyment (walking meditation, walk with family members, etc). But with a 210 mile goal staring me down, you’d better believe I’m counting my walks.
It was also National Foam Rolling Day. Who knew that was a thing? My Balega Impi team was gifted The Grid Foam Roller from Triggerpoint. Let’s just say it hurts so good!

Caveman got his MRI results and, as expected, his tricep rupture is severe. All 3 heads of the tricep tendon pulled completely off the elbow, taking a piece of bone along with. His surgery is scheduled for this Thursday. According to his doc, it’s a fairly simple surgery with a long recovery. 8 weeks in a brace followed by 8 weeks of PT. He seems to be coping well, but does one ever really know?
My dad seemed to be doing well at home health wise, with nursing care and weekly visits from two different physical therapists, however his wife decided it’s too much for her to handle (totally understandable) and asked that we get the ball rolling toward putting him in a nursing home permanently. Of course with the COVID situation, this is absolutely the last thing I want to do right now.

This week on YouTube: I shared a Arm & Shoulder Sculpt Workout. This is the third of a 3-part Total Body Tabata series. Do the Core Tabata, Lower Body Burn, and the Arm/Shoulder Workout in succession and you’ve got a total body workout in under 30 minutes. Boom!
How was your week? Has spring finally sprung? Is your state opening up at all yet? Do you count your walking miles?
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

What a cool challenge! I normally don’t count my walking miles, but now I’m thinking that I should. I never had a reason not to count the miles so I just should! It will actually be cool to count up how many miles I walk in a month.
Sending positive vibes for your husband’s surgery in a few days – I hope that everything goes well.
Kimberly Hatting says
I count my intentional walking miles (because those are usually done at a decent pace)…any misc. miles ( from random steps that show up on my phone’s pedometer) I ignore. So sorry to hear about your hubby’s and father’s situations. Hugs to you…
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
Ditto on walking. I just started a challenge to run/walk my state’s perimeter, and it goes on for an entire year. In theory I could do it with just running miles but I’m counting my walking miles so that I have the flexibility to take time off running if I need to. Two daily dog walks plus the occasional “for me” walk are really adding up. I’m sending you a some virtual hugs for the Caveman and your father.

Oh my gosh your poor husband! That sounds so painful. Ouch! I hope things work out with your dad. I know a nursing home is the last thing you want to put him in but can understand the reasons behind it. I saw the photos of National Foam Rolling Day and did not know it was a thing either. I have one like yours and it hurts when I use it. 🙂 But I still like it.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Sounds like a lot going on with your dad right now. That’s a tough call. We do have a challenge for the whole month of June to Run/Ride the Maumee river (the river near me). 137 miles of running/walking (or 274 miles of biking). I think I will probably sign up only because they are counting the walking miles too. No need for me to be busting out full marathon training miles right now! I hope the surgery goes well for Caveman. That’s tough too – but looking toward the end goal will help!

210 miles in 30 days is a LOT! I would definitely count my walking steps as well.
How did your poor husband manage to have such a horrific injury?
Seeing you on that foam roller reminds me that I should be doing more of that.
Have a great week and wishing a speedy recovery to the Caveman!
Jessie says
Your poor husband. I can’t imagine, that sounds so painful. Sorry to hear about the challenges with your dad.
Btw, love your medal display! Do you hang all medals or just marathons? I haven’t done a great job with non-marathon ones, but wish I would have. I definitely have all my marathon ones hanging though! And the gorgeous 6 star one 🙂
Wendy says
Poor Greg. But I bet he’ll be relieved to have the surgery behind him.
I’m so glad you’ve made your videos! I need some new stuff to do…
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
I never think about counting my walking miles until I see or hear about other people doing it. I’m like you – my walks are purposeful and usually involve 2 4-legged creatures. But, I don’t blame you – I’d count them for that challenge too!
I cannot even imagine how your husband feels. Hope the surgery goes well this week! 8 weeks in a brace and 8 weeks of PT does seem like a lot but, it’ll be worth it after it’s all said and done.
I’ve never actually heard of National Foamrolling Day. That should be way more celebrated!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I am so sorry about the Caveman & your Dad.Putting my Dad in a nursing home was a terrible decision for my mom — but in her case, my dad was incontinent, verbally abusive — sometimes even physically abusive. Dementia sucks (because that was never my Dad).
Even without all that, though, I can totally understand.
I hope that the surgery goes well. Good luck on your walking + running — I know you guys can do it! We only walk about 1.5 miles a day (although I still pace around the house a lot). Old dogs. With all the pee stops, it’s seriously barely walking.
Deborah Brooks says
Ouch your husbands injury sounds so painful! I never used to count walking miles either but now I am doing so many afternoon walks that they will get counted in. I am enjoying them and do most while chatting on the phone or listening to audible books. It’s all good keeps us moving. A great week of workouts for you!
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
Ouch, that injury sounds painful! Hopefully he can get on the road to recovery soon after surgery!
This time around I am counting walking miles for my monthly challenge because I ambitiously thought I could do 150 miles then found that was pushing my body too hard and I ended up with a calf strain. So to avoid further forays into the land of injuries, I opted to start counting my walks.
Michelle D. says
Wow, that sounds painful – sending positive vibes to your husband for his surgery and recovery. And I totally get how stressful the whole situation with looking for a nursing home for your Dad – my MIL is in a nursing home in upstate NY and it’s a constant source of worry with all that’s going on.
What a cool challenge you’re doing with Zenaida! I would definitely count my intentional walking miles.
angela @ happy fit mama says
Oh wow. Your husband’s injury sounds so painful. And that recovery…ouch. Hope the surgery goes well. I started tracking my walking miles since the Stay at Home orders started. We’ve been walking at least 2-3 times a day. And I started doing more walking challenges on Strava. It’s never a ton of miles but it adds up over the month.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I dont count my walking miles either. If I go for a walk its usually about 2 miles but I dont track the distance. I bet your miles will really add up with all the walking you do!
Wow, sorry about everything else going on. What a tough decision about your dad. I know here they are now doing really frequent testing of everyone who lives in and works at nursing homes so I believe the numbers are getting better. Hopefully they are taking lots of precautions there too.
And your husband’s injury and surgery sounds terrible! I can’t believe that happened!
SJ says
I totally count my walking miles, just because there are a few days when that’s all I get in. I’m sorry for all the stress you must be under, hopefully things will get better.
Laetitia says
I’m sorry to hear about your dad. That’s a hard decision to make in normal but especially right now…
Jenn says
That’s hard news about your dad. I hope you are able to find a place with which you are all comfortable, but I totally understand why that is not the decision you would like to be making right now.
Poor Caveman 🙁 That’s a long recovery, and I hope that he continues to be positive about things. A good attitude helps with so much.
Right now, you bet your booty I’m counting walking miles! I never used to, but that was back when I could run 6-10 miles at a time without skipping a beat. Now, I count every single inch of my “exercise walks.”
Darlene S Cardillo says
I signed up to do 500k and cross NYS.
You bet I’ll count my walking.
I think I may be walking more than running but really enjoy it…no races to train for so why not.
GL with your dad. And hope your hubby is a good patient.
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I’ve been on the fence on whether I should include my intentional walks or not as a workout, but I think I will continue to keep tracking it!
I’m sorry to hear about your husband’s tricep and your dad…sending positive vibes your way!
Thelma says
Sorry to hear about your dad…..and Caveman 🙁 We so need to catch up!
xo

I’m with you on walking, it was never “for exercise”, which is why this last mumbles weeks was a total mind fuck. I loved walking for fun when I did my version of the Great Manhattan Loop, but when I “have to”, it goes out the window. Good luck with your “travel”
