Can you believe it’s Memorial Day weekend? I feel like we’re in a time warp. It is a real mental challenge to stay positive while time slips away in these long weeks of staying home. With the exception of yoga, my workouts were consistent. It’s one of the few things I feel like I can control.
The trails are looking lush and lovely. although it’s time to think about ticks.
Here’s how this week’s workouts went.
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 3 miles +Resistance Band Workout
Wednesday: Run 5 miles + Walk 4 + Core Workout
Thursday: Resistance Band Workout + 3 mile walk (Tricep surgery day)
Friday: Run 5 miles + Lower Body Burn
Saturday: Trail Run 3 miles + Walk 3 miles
Sunday: Strength + walk 4 miles
It was a week of tying up loose ends….and loose triceps. The Caveman’s surgery went well. The first day or so post-op was rough…probably because someone refused to take any pain meds. After SO. MUCH. RAIN, the sun finally came out, it warmed up, and mom Nature flicked the humidity switch on high. Of course she did.
I dragged my yard/deck stuff out for the summer, and got a good jump on summer planting.
Thing 2 had her official last day of 8th grade. I can’t believe I’ll never have a child over in the elementary or middle school ever again. Sigh. High school had a virtual graduation ceremony this week. Next week the middle school will do the same.
Memorial Day will be low key but Caveman’s parents are dying to see him, so I invited them to a socially-distanced graduation yard party. I’ll grill steak for the Caveman and his dad, burgers and Salmon with Lemon-Garlic Butter for the rest of us.
I made a batch of my S’mores Energy Bites, because they’re festive and delicious and gluten-free. Find the recipe here.
New on YouTube. Try my new Full-Body Resistance Band Workout and let me know what you think! Perfect for travel (not that we’re doing that anytime soon) or when space and/or access to gym equipment is limited.
The Week Ahead
- 8th Grade Virtual Graduation Ceremony
- Socially Distanced Diploma Presentation
- 8th Grade Car Parade
- Spring Flute Recital via Zoom. Thing 2 is playing Poem by Griffes and I assure you I am way more excited about it than she is.
The Runfession Friday Linkup opens this week! Be sure to join us!
How was your week? Did things heat up where you are? How are you celebrating Memorial Day? Thanks to all who’ve sacrificed so much to keep our country safe!
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

I was so glad to hear that your husband’s surgery went well and that he is on the road to recovery.
Your summer plants look so pretty already! I love all of the colors.
Have fun during the socially-distanced graduation party tomorrow! I’m sure it will be great to see family and enjoy yummy food and drinks 🙂

Pain meds are such a tricky thing. Like so many things right now, hard to know what to do. Glad things are better there.
You can’t go wrong with s’mores.

Nothing special going on for Memorial Day. Usually we’d be with my mom. Maybe my sister will go out.

We were promised warm temps this week, and they didn’t materialize until Saturday afternoon. Oh well….at least it didn’t snow LOL So glad to hear the caveman is doing well (he’s lucky to have such an attentive personal nurse). Congrats to the graduate!!! I’m not much of a YouTube gal, so I keep forgetting to check out your stuff….I’m gonna try to take a look this week. I’ve heard great things about your workouts 😉
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
The heat is on and I’m outside soaking it in. I’m not good with running in the heat but I love it for the other 23 hours of the day. I’m glad that the Caveman’s surgery went well. Enjoy your time with family this weekend!

I’m glad your husband’s surgery went well. I had to talk my husband into taking pain meds before — but not when he had kidney stones. I feel sorry for the kids missing out on these rites of passage. Mine always grumbled about the ceremonies, but I know they were meaningful anyway. I think my Mom would have missed them the most though.

Congrats to your daughter for her 8th grade graduation. It’s a bittersweet moment for Moms. I know. The good thing, as I am learning, is that you get to do it all over again when grandchildren appear! Nice workouts this week. Have a wonderful Memorial Day!
Catrina says
Of course! No pain meds for the Caveman! Haha! Glad all went well all the same! I guess he’ll have his arm in a sling for a while.
Have a happy graduation celebration tomorrow! It must be hard for Thing 2 to have everything virtual. It’s as if a part of their lives have been stolen from them. It’s a good thing you have organized a little party for tomorrow.

So glad your husband’s surgery went well! Pain meds are tough… I needed them after I broke my leg, but was eager to get off them as quickly as I could.
Also happy your running continues to go well! Workouts are definitely a consistent way to feel normal during this abnormal time.
Have a wonderful celebration with the family!

Husbands can be the worst patients since they rarely seem to have patience for the healing process. Congrats to your daughter (and you!) – this is a milestone! I’m doing your resistance band workout tomorrow. I have some and always forget about using them.
Deborah Brooks says
Workouts do seem to be one thing we can control! You had a great week of activity. Glad to read that your hubs is doing ok. Hope the virtual graduation goes well. WE are doing one for my niece in a few weeks. I am making actual smores tonight more than excited. Have a great week and thanks for linking up

LOVE how the pup is looking back like “Come ON mo-om!”
Glad the surgery went well. Hope he’s starting to feel better
Enjoy the graduation festivities, surreal as they are. All of these (wonderful) car parades just prove we never outgrew our love of trucks and tractors

My son’s wrapping up 8th grade too – bittersweet to have the elementary and middle school days be a thing of the past.
So glad to hear your husband’s surgery went well! Hope his recovery is speedy and uneventful.
I’m looking forward to checking out your resistance band workout!

Glad to hear surgery went well. I don’t blame him for not wanting meds. I’m the same way! We still don’t know if my kids will have any kind of graduation from 4th grade. It’s usually a pretty big deal because they are moving to a new school next year. I’m bummed if they don’t get something!
Wendy says
I’m so glad Greg’s surgery went well. Hopefully he is feeling better by now. Wasn’t the humidity ridiculous today? Could we acclimate a bit? LOL
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Glad the surgery went well! We have had a few warm days here and there but overall its been very cool for this time of year. I think its finally supposed to start warming up this week.
SJ says
You are so lucky to have school coming to a close for the year. I feel like ours is just going to keep hammering us with stuff. Hope the party is fun! Sounds like you had a good week.
Zenaida Arroyo says
No one really likes pain meds but many times they’re necessary, right? I hope he starts feeling better. Well, weather wise I had the same as you. Now this week will be warmer and now I will start complaining about how HOT it is. 🙂 I understand the reason but all of these virtual ceremonies and parades are so sad. I still cannot believe that’s how things are right now.
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
It really doesn’t feel like a holiday weekend because of the social distancing, stay at home. Someone mentioned they had a three day weekend and I was like “I’ve had a two month weekend.” It’s very odd.
Men are very stubborn- mine doesn’t like pain meds, or doctors or anything. He’s been refusing surgery on his back for months even though he needs it. Hope yours heals up quickly!
Jenn says
I hate taking any kind of medication, but one thing my surgeries have taught me is don’t be a hero! Take the pain meds! I hope Caveman is feeling better.
Congratulations to Thing 2. Her recital is going to be amazing. I got to help set our chorus director up with a Facebook Live platform so he could stream the virtual year-end concert and art show, and it was really cool.
I hope you have a nice day seeing the parents today. I saw mine on Saturday and it was so nice.
Laetitia says
Ooh, I might try those s’mores energy bars! Thanks for sharing the recipe. And the low key, grilling, memorial day slash graduation party sounds lovely. I feel so bad for kids missing all these fun celebrations ….
Black Knight says
Glad to read that the surgery went well.My wife has the same behavior: she refuses med!
Congrats to your daughter.
Here it’s hot, I have too run in early morning.
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
I’m glad the surgery went well! I think our school district did a good job trying to celebrate the accomplishments of the students while continuing with the education. This will be my daughter’s last year of band, so it was a bummer not to see her play in a concert one last time.
The blog post with the recipe was hilarious! I think my husband does the same thing with pictures 😉
