How can it be May? Typically I call this month MAYhem, because every event known to man seems to happen in May. Graduations, concerts, recitals, weddings, races, end-of-school everything…all of it. Except this year there will be likely none of it. Sigh. I’m joining Deborah, Coco and you for the Ultimate Coffee date. I’m also linking up with Meranda and Lacey for Friday Five.
I’m sipping on some Rainforest Blend with collagen and half & half in my London mug, in celebration of the anniversary of finishing the 6 World Marathon Majors there just one year ago.
Here’s a throwback pic, for old time’s sake. When I came upon the Tower Bridge at the halfway point of the London Marathon. It was one of those surreal, holy sh!t moments of a lifetime.
Over coffee I’d tell you about a multi-page article in the Chicago Tribune discussing how Chicago runners are not social distancing and how the city aldermen get “hundreds” of complaints from pedestrians. While I don’t live anywhere near downtown Chicago, my initial inclination was to take umbrage. I suspect the runners were likely out there all along, or have been pushed to city streets and sidewalks because the parks and lakefront path have been closed. The article goes on to say runners are in the lowest risk group and explains that a single drop of sweat or body fluid from a passing runner will not transmit the virus. You had to read deep into the article to glean that information though. Should runners be careful and courteous? Of course. But I felt this article gave them a bad wrap.
Over coffee I’d tell you we had a wedding to go to at the end of this month that has been postponed. I’d ask you if you’d send a gift now? Or wait until they reset the date or opt for a private wedding celebration. I’m not sure postponements due to pandemic are in the etiquette books…yet.
Over coffee I’d tell you ZOOMA unveiled it’s new Run Club and we’re super excited about it. There’s a free option and of course an option with amazing swag. I’d ask you to join me. Read all about it here. When you join the Run Club (even the free option) the Summer Challenge is only $35. And you-know-who is coaching that.
Over coffee I’d tell you I’ve got a Run Faster series going over on YouTube. The first installment is a Speed & Agility Workout. Check it out here. Thanks to all of you who have subscribed. I really appreciate it!
What would you tell me over coffee? What are you most bummed about having canceled?
Darlene says
I agree about running. I find them very courteous. It’s great to be outdoors.
I had a wedding cancelled. I’m waiting with my gift.
I signed up for Zooma.
I’m the most bummed about my races. Cancelled or postponed. No refunds just virtual. I’m doing them. But not a race in my book.
First world problems. I am healthy.
Wendy says
Personally, I’m struggling with the walkers, who haven’t been moving over to make proper distance for when I pass. They spread out across the path. It’s really frustrating.
I want that Zooma hoodie!
Deborah Brooks says
I saw that hoodie and the wine tumbler super cute! I have joining the run club on my to do list for this weekend. I have been avoiding our trails bc I know they are too crowded mostly w kids on trikes. What I miss most? Just hanging and running w my friends. Soon I hope
Kim G says
I feel like all of 2020 has been absolute MAYhem, lol.
Thank you for sharing information about the Zoom Run Club. I will definitely check it out!
Coco says
Ugh on the wedding. I’ve told my son and his fiancee to wait until June to make decisions on their mid-July wedding. It’s not like any one will make other plans if they don’t get their invitations out now and 99% of guests would be driving so as long as the state permits it, we can be there.
Isn’t it amazing how different things are now than this time last year?
Laurie says
Nice coffee mug! So glad you got to run the London Marathon last year. I have a friend who is supposed to run it this year. I don’t know if we will be allowed to travel abroad even by September/October. What a difference a year makes!
Kimberly Hatting says
I keep forgetting to sign up for ZOOMA…it’s not like they’ve been reminding me (daily) via email LOL We’re staying in tonight (big surprise), I’ll try to remember to get that task checked off. A coworker (and his bride-to-be) decided to move their June wedding back to next June….ugh.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
My one half was not surprisingly cancelled. I haven’t traveled anywhere in forever. Seriously, it’s well over a year and what a year that’s been! I was very excited about it when I signed up, but oh well, it is what it is & I chose Revel partially for their generous deferral policy (because of my dad at the time). I’ve just wanted to run one of their races so long . . . first world problems, for sure.
I just run in my neighborhood because the streets are much wider than the bike paths. I’m definitely bored by it though!
Catrina says
I so envy you that you could run the London marathon! That’s my dream race!
I think I would send the wedding present anyways – would probably brighten up their day 😊
Jenn says
No mayhem this month.
We have a wedding on June 6 that has decidedly not been canceled. We shall see how it all goes.
I am bummed about all the spring festivals and events that are canceled. This is always such a great time of year for that.
Guess what? My ZOOMA Amelia Island tribe as grown! We’ve got ourselves a party!
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
MAYhem. lol. That’s pretty appropriate.
I’m most bummed that my husband’s niece’s April wedding got cancelled because my sailor and I were going to meet there and photograph it. He was last home at the beginning of February and I was looking forward to that time with him before he finished out his tour out in CA and transferred home. Oh well. I’m disappointed but it wasn’t MY wedding so I really feel for his niece. His other niece had her wedding scheduled for June and that got cancelled too.
I’m not sure what I would do with the wedding gift (our gift to my husband’s niece was photography). I can see going both ways. Sorry, I’m no help. lol
Michelle D. says
I don’t think I’ve ever seen our family calendar look so empty during May! I really miss not being able to go to the boys’ concerts and lacrosse games 🙁 We’ve had a couple of graduation parties canceled as well. I feel for people planning weddings – so much to coordinate to have to start all over.
fairytales and fitness says
Yes May does tend to be busy for us. Lots of birthdays, mothers day, etc. I’d wait on sending the wedding gift just to see what they are going to do.
I’d love to read that article in the Tribune! I wonder if it is online. You are right, the runners were probably there all along, they are just now getting noticed because everyone else isn’t. -M
Farrah says
I feel like of all the people out there right now, runners are the most courteous–they have plenty of experience with distancing from pedestrians/random other people!
I have no idea what the etiquette would be but I’d probably just send the present anyway to hopefully brighten their day!
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
I’m all for social distancing, but I nearly lost it when I saw an article that said that runners need to stay 15 feet away because that’s how far we spread our germs when we run…c’mon now. The toughest thing we’ve had canceled was a Boy Scout trip this summer, a good year of planning and a lot of money went into that one. I’ve accepted that races won’t be happening this year.
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
The weather here today was absolutely gorgeous and our whole family was supposed to be going to the wedding of the son of dear friends (one of our sons is a groomsman). Obviously, it had to be postponed due to the virus. They rescheduled to early December and all I could think of today was what wonderful weather we were having for an outdoor wedding at a vineyard… It didn’t even dawn on me to send a gift now, but they announced the new date when they sent out an email about rescheduling.
How lucky that you got your final World Majors race in last year and weren’t devastated by your final race being canceled this year.
Liz Dexter says
I’m glad you have got London done and dusted. I am also glad I didn’t have any races I’d signed up for. I will miss the canal canter in August but it will be back another year I’m sure.
