This week the inevitable happened. Our shelter-in-place order was extended to May 30. While it comes as no surprise, the cold, hard reality of it feels daunting. As per usual, I leaned into my running, which has been a true godsend these past couple of months.
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 6 miles + yoga
Wednesday: Run 2 miles + Strength, Balance, Mobility
Thursday: Trail Run 6 miles + Trauma Yoga
Friday: Strength & Balance for Trail Runners
Saturday: Not-too-heavy strength + killer core
Sunday: Run 7 miles
Weather-wise, the week left much to be desired. We’re a good 15+ degrees below average with lots of rain in the forecast, although we haven’t actually gotten all of it. Still though it’s been overcast and dreary. Not what one would hope for late April.
When rain dampens my motivation to run I head to the pain cave
On the home front, our house was filled with stress….and music. Thing 1 finished her last final exam for Georgia Tech and Thing 2 knocked out two remote music auditions. One for high school band, apparently there are five different levels of band she could be placed in, and finally the one for the Chicago Symphony Youth Orchestra she’d been waiting on for awhile. Both required a video submission and a live video performance. Thing 2 has been struggling with motivation thru this pandemic and all of her music education has been either canceled or gone remote. I’ve been doing my best to keep my mouth shut and not nag her, and this week she finally threw down the gauntlet and practiced. Music to my ears, literally and figuratively!
She did not want us here for the live video auditions, but according to her they went “alright”. I have no clue what the outcome will be or when she’ll hear something, but I know having the auditions behind her is a huge stress relief. Some of you have asked what she plays. She’s so secretive I don’t know entirely but I do know she played this excerpt from Beethoven’s 3rd that starts around 9:35. Her contrasting solos are Bach’s Badinerie and Poem by Griffes. There are more etudes and excerpts I have no clue about. I just listen in amazement most of the time.
My Sitka Salmon Share arrived! The fisherman over in Alaska and the North Pacific are busy with their spring catch and I was very happy to receive a box of goodness.
Read all about Sitka Salmon Shares and find my recipe for Fish Tacos here. Sitka Salmon Shares is a collective of small-boat, community fisherman who came together to form a wild-caught fish delivery service. I’ve mentioned before that I tend to shy away from cooking fish at home due to the questionable freshness of the fish available at the grocery stores here in the Midwest. Sitka Salmon Shares was a total game changer for me since it’s blast frozen right in Sitka immediately after it’s caught. The difference in flavor is amazing. Stay tuned for more fish recipes and save $25 off your own Sitka Salmon share† with code MHS. Check out the 2020 shares here.

Gluten-Free Chocolate-Chip Cookies. I’d be lying if I told you going gluten-free and soy-free at the beginning of the year was easy. So many foods and snacks are off limits now and so many of the gluten-free versions are just not worth eating. I’ve been tinkering for awhile now and I’m happy to report I’ve come up with a gluten-free chocolate chip cookie recipe I truly and deeply love. Of course even gluten-free cookies aren’t exactly health food, but a girl’s gotta have a treat once in awhile and these totally fill the bill. I’ll share the recipe for these this week!
ZOOMA Summer Challenge Registration is Open! This is ZOOMA’s most popular challenge and I’ll be coaching it again this year. Learn more about it and register here.
New on YouTube, Workout for Trail Runners. Many people tell me they’ll walk trails but they fear trail running because they’ve fallen, sustained injury or felt especially beaten up afterward. I created this workout to train your balance and strengthen your stability muscles so you CAN enjoy trail running injury free. If you haven’t already subscribed to my channel, I’d so appreciate it if you would!
How was your week? Challenging weather? Virtual Races? Any good recipes? What are you leaning in to?
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

The Zooma Summer Challenge sounds cool! I remember you talking about it last year too so I love that it’s an annual thing. I’m sure it will provide a lot of motivation.
Those cookies and fish tacos look so yummy!
Catrina says
What a solid week of running! Are you running more than before?
Looks like Things 1 and 2 are doing well, despite the challenges. It must be hard as a mum to keep your mouth shut. I’m happy that it all turned out well.

I have to give our weather credit for not being terrible, but sheesh there’s so much room for improvement. When my company enforced WFH they said it would be until June 1 wordwide , so that’s always been my benchmark for the return to “new normal” or I guess “next normal”. Our state’s shelter in place order is supposed to be lifted in early May, I think they’re being a little optimistic with that.

Those cookies look amazing! I have all the salad in the world at the moment as I got panicky in the supermarket about picking stuff up and then putting it back down again so I brought it all home!
Jessie says
You have a lovely home gym set up! Helps during a rainy cooler week!
Thanks for the info on the salmon shares, sounds like a great option.
Wendy says
I meant to comment on your IG post–you look amazing, Marcia! Nice week of miles too. Fingers crossed on Jill’s audition!
Anxiously awaiting your cookie recipe, as the only flour I can find is gluten free.

I am one of those who is afraid of trail running. I have fallen twice a few years back. I sprained my ankle pretty badly once. I envision myself loving trails but still scared of tripping again. Too bad I cannot come run with you! Making fish tacos tonight as well! Way to get in all those miles this week! Thanks for linking up

That flip flop medal is amazing. You/Sarah/Erika have a great sense for fun medals
I don’t know how I missed your first salmon post – salmon is my crack and something that made me miss my George Foreman. Contemplated liberating mom’s if I’d gone to her place

Congrats to both your girls for making it through a stress-filled week!
I am definitely planning on checking out your strength and balance workout – I love hiking trails but I am super hesitant about running on them.

Our weather has been a roller coaster ride. We haven’t had a lot of rain (probably jinxing all of Iowa with that statement), but we have had a lot of fog and wind. BUT, we have had some really beautiful sunshine (even with the wind), so I feel like a schmuck complaining. Hope all goes well from your daughter’s auditions!!
angela @ happy fit mama says
The weather is definitely NOT helping the situation. We’ve had so much rain and chilly days. Yesterday was a gorgeous bluebird day in the afternoon. More of that please!
Darlene S Cardillo says
I am so ready for warm weather. Every time I think it’s sporing, it snows.
Can’t wait to watch your trails video. I walk them lol
Coco says
I think it’s been 47F every morning when I take Scooby out, and raining 1/2 the time. This weekend was really dreary. I’m glad your daughters’ major stressors are behind them. I’m sure the virtual try-outs were tough. Fingers crossed!
I think our stay-at-home order already lasts until June 10, but our governor may give in to pressure to start opening things earlier. I am afraid of the rebound when more people are out and about ….

Amazing job this week!! That stinks about the weather–it’s so unpredictable and I feel like super fitting for how this years going so far. Blah..BUT hopefully soon things start to warm up and sunny up where you are!!
That’s so awesome that you created that workout! I am definitely going to check it out. I’m so bad at switching things up but I need to try more trail running for sure! It seems likes so much fun but takes serious focus!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Great job with your workouts! I was so happy to get to practice yoga this past week, even though it’s a pretty challenging class!
I’m not even sure how long our stay at home order lasts in PA, I just feel like we should at least go til June.
Fingers crossed for your daughter! I played the clarinet and while I have competed for County bands, I never got to your daughter’s level, though I wish I had!
That fish looks amazing! I might need to check that out…
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Good job on the workouts this week! Oh yes, all the virtual races going on here! but now, I have nothing on my calendar and it’s time for recovery/rebuild. It gets a bit crazy around our house when the kids have to submit band auditions. Hearing the same song a million times tends to get a bit old! 🙂 I wish your daughter the best. Fingers crossed for her!
Jenn says
Last week was stormy and humid, this weekend was just miserably hot, and today… gorgeous. More of today, please.
That challenge looks super fun.
We haven’t had an update on our “Safer at Home” orders yet. I was pretty sure we were going to follow along with Georgia, but nope. We are still mostly closed down. I guess we just need to keep an eye on it and see what happens.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Weather ditto, but I try to dwell on the nice days we’ve had. There’s been a few, and this weekend actually looks like *maybe* there will be Spring-like temps.
Congrats to both things! It’s not easy to be self motivated at that age considering what’s going on and the uncertainty of everything.
My race is cancelled, no surprise there, so I’m not sure what I’m going to do with running. Obviously I’ll continue to run, but I’ll probably drop down even more — not like I was running that much anyway!
Zenaida Arroyo says
Well, you know how the weather has been for me. 🙂 We cannot get a break. It was gorgeous on Tuesday and then it rain on Wednesday. More rain now? I got an email about the ZOOMA Run Club and signed up for it and the Summer Challenge. I am not really a medal person but that one is so cute!

I’m glad you can still do your sport. I’ve had to switch from skating to walks, Zoom Zumba, and weight training. I’m so glad my husband bought a full weight setup for the garage. Luckily I’d been learning how to use it for the last year or so. Now, motivation, with all that’s going on and no events anytime soon? That’s a whole nother deal.
How smart you were to not nag your daughter about her practice. We’re all at least a bit off our game. The salmon share looks great, especially when you are not in the Northwest, and maybe even then (a stocked-up freezer could be a good thing as we go on).
