While out on the trail this week, I heard the call of the Sandhill Crane. The other day I spotted a couple of robins. If that doesn’t say spring is here, I don’t know what does. Here in the Chicago area it’s not uncommon to go from 20 to 85 virtually overnight, skipping spring entirely, so I’m going to enjoy spring despite what the calendar says.
Let’s sit down for coffee with Deborah and Coco for the March edition of the Ultimate Coffee Date. I’m having the last of my Starbucks Winter Blend with half and half and of course some Collagen Peptides from Now Foods. What’ll you have?
Over coffee I’d tell you that in one week, Thing 1 will be home for spring break. Of course I’m counting. She’s had an amazing freshman year at Georgia Tech and I couldn’t be more proud of her. She interviewed for a Teaching Assistant position for next year and GOT IT! All that said, she made it clear that she expects our usual egg hunt while she’s home on break. One is never too old for a fun tradition I guess!
Over coffee I’d tell you that while I’m not in full-on panic mode about coronavirus, it does give me pause about Thing 1’s study abroad plans this summer. We’ve already paid one deposit for Spain and another is due soon. It’s all non-refundable and while Spain is not a hotbed for the disease at this time, we all know how quickly that could change. What to do? I also planned on spending time traveling in Spain with her this summer before her studies start, but I runfess I’m dragging my feet planning that trip.
Over coffee I’d tell you I was so looking forward to Thing 2’s piccolo master class with a notable Italian piccoloist this weekend. I was super bummed when it was abruptly cancelled due to “visa issues”. I can’t help but suspect the coronovirus in Italy has something to do with it.
Over coffee I’d tell you I suspect some sort of runner database has been hacked. In the past couple of days I’ve gotten phishing scams from Fleet Feet, Bank of America and Abbott World Marathon Majors. So annoying.
Over coffee I’d ask you if you were looking forward to springing ahead this weekend. While I don’t love losing that hour, I sure do love some extra daylight in the evening. I can’t freaking wait until it’s warm enough to get the garden going and enjoy our outdoor spaces.
What would you tell me over coffee?
Darlene S. Cardillo says
I’ve gotten so many more phishing emails lately.
Fingers crossed NYC half is not cancelled next weekend.
Can’t wait to run in a skirt!! Cold here still today and this weekend
Wendy says
I have gotten a lot of phishing emails and spam this week, although mine have been of the senior citizen variety. Also, spam texts! WTH?
I saw a crane on my trail run this week but no robins. I’m going with your sighting! Spring is coming!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Oh, poor Thing 2. But great news about Thing 1! That’s a really tough decision about the time abroad. Fingers crossed that things go well there.
Robins do seem to be out & about everywhere now. Thank God!

I got a lot of spam texts this week which was weird. I like more afternoon sunlight too so bring it! I understand your stress about summer plans. I am really hoping that by summer time this thing is over by then. It’s getting a little panicky around here. Thanks for joining for coffee today

As I was returning home yesterday, in broad daylight after my run, it hit me that it wouldn’t be as bright and sunny this time in a few days. Oh well…it’s nice to know there will be plentiful daylight, after work, from here on out (at least for the next several months). Congrats to the daughter and her TA gig!
Coco says
Nope. I hate springing forward. As an early morning exerciser, it makes it harder to wake up and darker again.
Ugh on the study abroad stress. I spent last week planning my trip to Copenhagen in May and hope it can happen!

I understand your concern about the coronavirus and Spain. I am feeling the same thing. We are supposed to leave for a trip to MOrocco and Portugal in a few weeks and I have been keeping my fingers crossed. They just reported the first cases in PA. Ugh!
Jenn says
I totally understand your fears, but hopefully things should be well in hand by then. <3
Yay for having Thing 1 home – I know you're going to be so happy to spend that time with her!
Springing ahead never bothered me. Little man always really rolled with the time change, so it's just business as usual.

Ah, “visa issues”. That definitely sounds like a corona virus-induced fear of flying. I’m sorry for your daughter, I bet she was looking forward to it.
I understand that you are worried about travelling to Spain. However, there is a lot of media-hype about the corona virus and it’s easy to be scared of it. I hope it will all work out well for you and Thing 1.

Congrats to your daughter on her TA position! I don’t blame you for being hesitant about dishing out more money for the Spain trip – so hard to know where this thing is headed!
While I’m looking forward to having more daylight later, as someone trying to shift back to early morning workouts the dark early hours will make the shift that much harder!

Like you, I enjoy springing ahead. Sure, the first 2 days are a little rough, but I really enjoy the extra daylight.

How exciting to have your daughter home over spring break! We still do Easter egg hunts here for the boys (as well as Santa stockings). Why break tradition???
Where in Spain will your daughter be studying? My eldest son lived with a family in Sevilla for a semester and came to embrace them as a second family. We’ve been to see them and they’ve come and stayed with us. It was a wonderful experience. I’m sure travel will be fine, but I did just see that the Barcelona Marathon has been postponed from March 15 to October 15. I’m sure it’s an (over)abundance of caution.

I understand your worry about your daughter’s studying abroad plans… my whole family is planning to visit here this summer and I don’t know if that’s going to be impacted and/or a good idea. I guess all we can do is wait and see?

Did I tell you my Spain trip was Coronavirused? Will her school still go forward? New York (both CUNY and SUNY, I think) recalled the study abroad students. So bummed for her if it has to be cancelled. Yay on the TA position, amaazing as a sophmore. Visa issues have been a thing here too for some programs and I wonder whether it’s been the visa challenges of the last few years, or the travel restrictions from Coronavirus regions. They really can’t shut down the airlines everywehre, since I don’t believe anywhere is “immune”
