February came in just as grey as January left. We’ve got record-breaking lack of sunshine here in Chicagoland. I’m not complaining though, because we’re mild! I’ll take extended grey skies over the minus 23 shizz we had last year any day. With a mere two weeks until ZOOMA Bermuda, here’s how my workouts went:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 4 miles
Wednesday: Heavy Strength + Stepmill Tabata
Thursday: Run 3 miles
Friday: Yoga
Saturday: Run 4 miles + Plank Challenge
Sunday: Heavy Strength + Stepmill Tabata + Plank Challenge
I wasn’t kidding when I said grey
This week marks four weeks of the AIP diet complete. Probably because the end is in sight, I found myself getting antsy. I wanted to go out to dinner on Friday night, even though I knew that wouldn’t go well. We didn’t. In four words: I’m sick of cooking. There. I said it.
The meals I was so excited about at the beginning are losing their allure, although both of these slaws are very good and easy to throw together. I’ll definitely keep them in our normal dinner rotation.
Broccoli, red cabbage, carrots, apples, ginger, parsley, apple cider vinegar
Mango, jicama, cucumber, scallions, cilantro, lemon-lime-orange juice, pinch of salt.
I’m starting to think about the end game and reintroducing foods. While I’m told it’s pretty much a given I’ll have to stay gluten- and soy-free, I wonder what other (if any) food groups I have sensitivities to? I also wonder if I’ll be able to maintain the increased energy, mental clarity and weight loss I’ve enjoyed. Time will tell I guess.
Loving
Since I’ve been doing this AutoImmune Protocol diet, I’ve been extra conscious about what I put ON my body as well. I’m grateful that Now Foods makes a variety of high-quality skincare options perfect for winter-dry skin. All are paraben-free, gluten-free and never tested on animals.
Their Cocoa Butter Lotion, is absolutely divine, not to mention its aroma has hints of chocolate.
Their Shea Butter is seriously amazing as well. It totally seals out dryness!
Not Loving
One-Uppers. We had dinner this week (brought my own food) with a group that included a one-upper. You know the kind. No matter what you say, they can’t simply acknowledge you with “Oh that’s so nice”, or “Wow what a bummer”. Without missing a beat they act as though it’s their duty to shift the attention away from whatever you’re speaking about to highlight one of their own accomplishments. An entire evening of that is completely draining.
If something good happens to someone, be happy for others’ success.
If something bad happens, learn to empathize and be supportive.
There’s a time and place to share stories, and there’s a time and place to be quiet and listen.
…at last the sun made a tiny appearance…just before it set
How was your week? Did you watch the Superbowl? Favorite commercial? Are you mindful of keeping conversations “balanced”?

I bet you are tired of cooking everyday. I love to cook but still need a break some days. I am interested to hear what happens after this food trial is over. I guess it did force you to expand your palette a bit.I do try to be mindful about keeping the conversations balanced. I hope I achieve it!

I’m really curious to hear how you feel once you add some of the foods you’ve avoided back into your diet, particularly dairy. That is such a trigger for me. It’s so hard to avoid, too. I guess everything in moderation.
You call them ‘one-uppers’, we had a friend I used to call ‘topper’. She always had to outdo you no matter what, good or bad. It was exhausting being around her. I guess it stems from insecurity but I’m not there to build up someone’s fragile ego, lol!
It was SO great to see you. Let’s not wait so long to do it again!

These recipes look wonderful. Thank you for sharing. I want to try that shea butter too. I have a local buddy who does really cool AIP kits. LMK if you want her info. She sends out boxes every month with really neat AIP products.

Listen I love cooking or I wouldn’t blog about it but YES DEAR GOD I GET SO SICK OF IT from time to time. That’s why you get extra props for sticking with AIP and not going out on Friday. Just two more weeks!

I know that sometimes (according to Mr. Judy) I can be a one upper, but I hope that it’s not too bad. I do have one friend like that. I won’t lie, it’s annoying.
Good luck with reintroducing foods & still feeling good. So far, knock on wood, I can eat most things, but I try to mostly keep gluten free, and try to limit sugar (that one is most definitely the bigger struggle!). I think the fact that I started doing do that a while ago helped. I still enjoy the occasional calzone or stromboli or sandwich, I just don’t make it an everyday occurrence.
I hear you on the cooking. I definitely get sick of it too!

I loathe one-uppers. It’s so exhausting dealing with people like that!
That mango slaw looks really good – I want to try that! I just found jicama at my local Trader Joe’s and I’ve been enjoying throwing it into smoothies.

I give you kudos to be able to modify your diet, and I’m happy it’s working for you! I hope introducing foods back into your diet won’t be much of an issue. I feel like I often end up running with people that have a bit of the one-upping. It sure gets tiring, and I hope I’m also not that person in other people’s opinions!
Kimberly Hatting says
You have been such a trooper with your AIP diet, Marcia!! Ugh to the one-uppers. I once had a local dude tell me he fondly remembered the “good old days when he was just training for marathons” because all of his Ironmans are exhausting. Yeah. That was immediately after I told him I was training for my first 26.2. I agree, there’s a time and a place for sharing what one has accomplished, and a time for letting others have the floor.
Jessie says
One-uppers are as bad as the people who say “I’m really fast.” Fast is so relative, we should only really be competing against ourselves. Anyway, really awesome job sticking with the diet, so impressive. I hope you have good luck re-introducing things!
Denise says
We have a one upper at work and we all know who she is.
You’ve done an amazing job on your diet. I’m not sure I could do the same.
Michelle D. says
One-uppers are just exhausting to be around!
I can imagine you’re getting tired of cooking. You are doing so well with this AIP diet. I will be really interested in hearing how the food-reintroduction goes. By the way, that slaw looks so good – I’d love to get the recipe.
Cari says
One upping is THE WORST. I’ve found myself avoiding those people
Doritos – Old Town Road, also because I’m kind of obsessed with that song
The mango slaw looks great.
BTW, are you Caterpy ambassador? Need to buy a new pair and want to get through you if you are. Of course I can’t dind the post
Shathiso says
Just realised that all the ingredients in your first slaw are things we usually always have in the house, but have never thought to make a salad using them! What an awesome combination – going to try that out for sure.
I haven’t seen that brand of shea butter, but I love shea butter especially for my hands as they get really dry with excema.

You’ve done great with your diet, and I hope you can continue to see some of the benefits of the changes you’ve made once you reintroduce foods! We are supposed to have rain just about every day this week. Sunshine helps so much with getting through this time of year!
Catrina says
Well, the skies may be grey but your food isn’t! I love the colours in your food photos!
Oh, a one-upper! I like that expression, I have never heard it before. So annoying! Just as bad as having someone knowing everything better, which I had to deal with yesterday. Some people just don’t know how to behave. 😳
Coco says
We used to have a one-upper in our group at work. It became and inside joke among the rest of us of what she’d come up with. I can’t remember what she was one-upping but I’ll never forget that she puts dirty dishes in the freezer when she doesn’t have time to clean up before a vacation ….
Glad you’re counting down the strictest part of the AIP.
Jenn says
So glad you’re in the home stretch! I hope your diet won’t be too limited when you start reintroducing.
I stayed up until the third quarter. We had friends over, so I wasn’t paying too much attention, but I did love the Doritos commercial with Sam Elliott. I thought it was super clever.
One uppers are awful. 🙁
Renée says
I’m tired of cooking too and I’m in week 3 of my reset. Though today’s pretty much gone into the wind with any sort of “diet”! Ha! I can imagine you are getting antsy though. Do you really need to be soy and gluten free? Is that what your docs are thinking too?
I don’t like one-upper’s either. I wonder if those kinds of people ever get tired of the sound of their own voice? A bit of listening and empathy goes a long way.
No superbowl here. No commercials but curious about the Momoa one!
Zenaida Arroyo says
I LOVE jicama!!! So crunchy and refreshing. I agree with you about the weather. Though I did get tired of the gray skies for so many days but was happy to see the sun this weekend.
San says
Oh, not a fan of one-uppers…. I know people who do that ALL THE TIME and it’s annoying.
