Just like that, February is drawing to a close. Is it just me or did it go way faster than January? Nevertheless it’s time to open the Runfessional for the Runfession Friday Linkup. As per usual, I’ve got my share of runfessions. Let’s get the party started, shall we?
I runfess that, other than Desi Linden, I have no clue who’s running the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta this weekend. Originally I was gonna be there, visiting Thing 1 at college and we (I mean I) planned to spectate. But since she’ll be away at some sort of sorority retreat, I decided I’d visit another time.
When I Googled the Marathon Trials to find out who indeed is running, I learned that the race takes place on Saturday from 12-3pm. I runfess I found that 3 hour time window a little unnerving, even though I well know all participants “should” be able to finish in well under 3 hours. I suppose if something happened they’d just drop out, rather than death march it in like us mere mortals would. Finishing is not winning in this case.
I thought I’d seen it all when I saw the guy who does 360 spins while on the stepmill. But I runfess I was equally mesmerized by a woman alternating sideways “galloping” with sprints on the treadmill. Does the fact that she totally locked out her elbows so her feet were barely touching the mill during her sprints diminish her accomplishment? Why yes. Yes it does. It was still highly entertaining though.
I told you about my crazy flights to Bermuda and how I had to dash through both Chicago O’Hare and Boston Logan to make my connections. I runfess that even though my Boston flight was far along in the boarding process, I still stopped off at a certain Starbucks to procure this sweet mug. Clearly I have my priorities.
Even though my autoimmune protocol diet is over, I’m still remaining soy and gluten free. I runfess the food labeling in this country is more than a little irritating. Take this “Olive Oil” mayo for instance. When you look at the label the first two ingredients are water and soybean oil. Why is olive oil featured in the name then?? Shouldn’t it be Soybean Oil Mayo?
Your turn: What have you to runfess? What will you do with our extra “leap day”?

In all honesty, I runfess that I really have not paid much attention to the Trials, either. And, (no hating), I’ll probably be watching basketball during that time frame. There’s a local gal, Susie Duke, who qualified a few years ago for the trials, but had a “bad” day on the course and didn’t advance. I don’t think she made it this year…but she did win a marathon in San Antonio in December with a 2:47ish finish time, and placed 4th in Phoenix last month with a similar finish.

If I’m home I might try to watch the trials. I didn’t realize they only had 3 hours! But you’re right, I guess they would drop out it it was taking longer than that.
The food labeling is so annoying! Did you know that there are like a million different names for soy that can be used on packaging? I tried cutting it out for a few weeks when Grayson was little and had terrible reflux and it was so overwhelming.
Catrina says
Crazy food labelling! It seems that the rules are flexible enough to allow for marketing-friendly twists. It’s best to carefully examine the ingredients every time we buy a new product. Tedious, but worthwhile!

LOL on the Starbucks mug. #priorities Reading labels is eye-opening and puzzling at the same time. I still wonder why deli ham needs to proclaim its “gluten free!” status. Maybe that’s the best it can say about itself? Good point on the trials time limit. I hope I can catch part of it.

i’m meeting with the other CARA ambassadors tomorrow–we’re supposed to go for a run and talk ambassador stuff. There will be some trial watching too.
I’ve been a label reader for years, having raised 2 boys with food allergies. It’s ridiculous how food manufacturers hide their ingredients behind obscure names. Milk=whey, casein, diacetyl, lactoferrin, recaldent among others. And don’t even get me started on ‘made in a factory where tree nuts are processed’. It’s on everything!

I changed my running route in Montreal to see if the Starbucks has a mug. Took 3 stores. Lol
Deborah Brooks says
Honestly, I have no idea who is in the olympic trials. Not really my thing. Definitely worth the extra time for the mug! When I was in New Orleans, I could not decide if I should get the Starbucks one or the Rock n Roll one. Decisions! Thanks for hosing today have a great weekend

I have a friend who is running the Atlanta marathon this Sunday. She picked it just so she could watch the marathon trials. We watched the marathon trials live once in NYC. It was so exciting! It was the year Ryan Hall won by a long shot.
There is so much soy used in processed foods in this country. Ugh! I don’t think eating all that soy is good for us. Soy contains plant hormones that mimic estrogen. Good for you for being a label-reader.

I runfess I don’t really follow elite runners for the most part, although I do enjoy watching them compete. They’re amazing!
When we connect through Chicago I’m always trying to figure out if I have enough time to stop at Garrets.
I am trying to teach Mr. Judy to read nutrition labels. It’s hit or miss. I noticed the pancake mix he bought has 9 gm of sugar in it. Why? He’s just going to douse it with maple syrup anyway! Clearly I haven’t yet quite gotten through to him.
Erica @ Erica Finds says
I runfess that I can’t pick three favorites for the women’s trials but currently leaning toward Desi, Kellyn Taylor and Lindsey Flanagan. I also runfess that I know nothing of the men’s field and I’m OK with that. If Meb’s not there, I don’t care 😉
Michelle D. says
Too funny about the Starbucks mug – priorities, right?
Honestly, beyond Desi I have no clue who’s competing – I am hoping to catch some of the trials and cheer her on!
SJ @ Airin' my dirty laundry says
I don’t pay much attention to the trials, I don’t have any idea about any of it. Nutrition labels are extremely frustrating to navigate. I have to go gluten and rice-free for a while due to health problems well 90% of gluten-free stuff is made with rice, that was frustrating.

Gym shenanigans always bemuse me. It’s like influencers, but they get the clicks.
12-3, Eek. Guess I’m not watching as I need to get off my butt and go run. Lazy lazy morning.
And yes, food labeling is ridiculous
Jenn says
Three hours! Man, that’s fast.
We are lounging around today. We chaperoned a middle school field trip to Sea World yesterday and the whole family is worn right out.
