It was a good final week of winter break but inevitably, it is drawing to a close. Thing 1 flies back to Atlanta Sunday night and Thing 2 heads back to school on Monday. We continue to be mostly mild and snow-free, which is a-okay with me. The week’s workouts went like this:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 3 miles
Wednesday: Heavy Strength (empty gym)
Thursday: 1 mile run + Plyometric Intervals
Friday: Trail Run 4 miles
Saturday: Balance, Mobility, Strength, Stepmill Tabata (gym was a zoo)
Sunday: Heavy strength (normal gym)
Mild temps and snow-free trails in January are a total WIN!
After reading Darlene’s review of her 2019 goals, I began to wonder if I, in fact, set any for myself. Of course my biggest goals were to finish the Tokyo and London Marathons upright and complete all 6 World Marathon Majors (mission accomplished). I also worked all year strengthening my medial glutes to correct the muscle imbalance I learned about at my Dexascan. A year later, I’m happy to say I’m able to handle 4x more weight with my medial glutes than I could when I started.
Beyond the marathons and the medial glutes though, I couldn’t think of anything else I’d wanted to achieve in 2019 so I did some sleuthing on the blog and whaddya know? Here’s what I found.
- Focus on taking in more protein.
- Be mindful of procrastination.
Um….sure…those sound great. But I runfess I promptly forgot about both. Ugh. I guess they were not meaningful enough for me to really care about.
Intentions for 2020
AutoImmune Protocol (AIP) Diet. This is my primary focus for the next 6 weeks. I’ve shopped. I’ve meal planned, meal prepped…stocked up on cassava flour, avocado oil and coconut milk, among other things…and I’m determined to make the best of it. I have no clue how it will impact my running or my anti-thyroid antibodies, but we’ll see soon enough. This week though it was kind of tough to not wipe out all the leftover holiday snacks as a last hurrah.
Running. I have no specific running-related goals at this time. I’m happy to continue running whatever, whenever and enjoy it.
Strength training. Since finishing the Majors, my focus shifted to strength training and I’m in a very good place with it. That said, I don’t really have any goals pertaining to it…just keep on keeping on.
Coaching. I’ve done a ton of coaching both with ZOOMA and on my own over the past year and that will continue. It’s my way of giving back to a sport that has been very good to me.
I’ll leave you with the first sunset of 2020. Here’s to an amazing year ahead.
How was your week? Did you follow through on any goals from 2019? Did you set goals/intentions for 2020?

It sounds like you are in a really good place with things right now and that’s a good thing. Your new eating plan will take lots of getting used to. I am looking forward to hearing how that works for you. My biggest focus right now is to keep recovering from my injury and get back to normal running. I also intend to add back in swimming once a week starting tomorrow. Thanks for joining us!

That is amazing that your medial glutes can now carry 4x more weight! It’s surprising what some focused strength training can do. And I like that you’re keeping your strength in your fitness routine, I think it’s important.
One of my 90-day goals is to be able to do 30 proper press-ups with arms tucked in my side. I still have 60 days to go and I’m at 13…. not sure I am going to make it! 😉
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
Thanks for the sunset! The thing about goals and intentions that makes sense to me is that if you have a “why” you’ll come up with the “how”. I have a list of things that don’t really have a “why” (looking at you, procrastination) and until I get a why there won’t be a how. I didn’t realize that AIP was “only” 6 weeks, that seems much more manageable especially since you have such a big “why” to back it up. Good luck Marcia!!!
Wendy says
I have to laugh because even though we didn’t talk about it, our posts have a similar theme. So do our intentions. Great minds really do think alike!
Kim G says
I feel like just completing one marathon would be enough of a goal for 2019, but you completed TWO and got your six-star medal. I would say you rocked those goals in 2019.
I really love your intentions for 2020! Good luck with the AIP diet – it sounds like you’re well prepared already 🙂
Michelle says
2019 pretty much rocked our cores, so my goals for 2020 are to get back into shape and be more present.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
My year definitely took a turn for the dark about halfway through. No way I could’ve predicted that, but I think I’ve handled it fairly well.
I am happy to have one half on my calendar. Now hoping I actually get to run said half!
Good luck with AIP. I hope that it gives you some answers. I actually do make a banana bread using cassava flour sometimes (but am guessing bananas aren’t on AIP? Or are they?). It’s a little gritty but i like it.

I have not looked back to see what my (if any?) intentions were for 2019. I’m quite content how the year played out, so I think I’ll just “play ostrich” and not look back LOL YOU really have upped your strength game! That’s exciting to see 🙂
Darlene says
Ha ha. Glad I’m not the only one who forgets what she had planned until the end of the year.
Good luck with your diet. I hope it does what you need.
Coaching is a great way to give back.
I need to get back to mentoring
Laurie says
I like the concept of setting intentions rather than goals. Goals bring expectations that may wind up creating frustration. Have fun with your running this year. 2019 was a huge year for you!
angela @ happy fit mama says
I think 2019 was the year that I really followed through with my goals. I set PR’s in the two races that I really wanted to improve in (even with tough conditions!), upped my strength training game and completed my first 50k. I feel like 2019 was a really turning point after years of tough running. I’m excited for 2020!
Zenaida Arroyo says
I spent half of the week sick with a cold. No bueno. I am excited to see how the AIP diet goes for you. I hope you see you in a race or two this year!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Good luck with the diet. Sounds like a good plan of attack! Since we were out of town from Dec 26-Jan 1st, I put all of our holiday cookies and treats in the freezer, because I am not one to just throw that stuff away! So, my goal it to eat all the treats by Jan 15 and be done with it. We usually don’t have a lot of treats around. I do love treats – but I also love healthy eating too.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I didn’t set any goals last year other than to survive my first year as a mom! It sounds like you had a great year. I hope the new diet goals well for you!
The Accidental Marathoner says
Wow, that’s some great progress on your strength training! I hope your new way of eating helps – I’ll be interested to see how you like it, not just how well it works for your targeted goal!
Sarah @ Bucket List Tummy says
Sounds like 2019 was a great year for you with the london and Tokyo marathons – amazing! I don’t have specific running goals for 2020 either right now – maybe that will change.
Jenn says
Gorgeous sunset!
My only intention is to get better! I miss my running life sooooo much and it’s awful not having races on the calendar or a training plan in place.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I’m thinking 2 marathon majors and stronger medial glutes sound like you definitely rocked 2019! I think you’re so right about any “goal” you forget about probably didn’t matter as much to you – and you should definitely only invest your time in the things that matter, right?
I’m still mulling my fitness goals – unlike last year, I don’t have a big race to focus on.
I hope all goes well with the AIP diet!
Coco says
I am not a goal-setter or a list-maker, but tend to fly by the sear of my pants. When I do set “goals” I tend to forget them, and agree that means they were not very meaningful. I do hope your AIP diet goes well!
Renée says
I love your intentions. And I love what you accomplished last year. I feel like last year was such a disaster for me that I don’t even want to set intentions, goals, words, mottos… nothing. I’m just too cautious right now.
I’m still prepping for my hormone reset diet, basically trying to see also if any eliminations make me feel better!
Denise @ runheartfit says
I looked back on my goals and I didn’t really do any of them. So much for setting goals. At least one of us made good on some 2019 goals. Strong work!
