Winter has come early to these parts. The front blew in on 40 mph winds on Halloween, dumping 5.5″ of snow in our town. The premature snow, winter-level temps and the darkness of the time-change put an abrupt end to a way-too-short autumn season. Welcome to Chibera where winter is 8 months long!
Here’s how my workouts went:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Trail Run 3 miles
Wednesday: Strength
Thursday: Treadmill Run 4 miles
Friday: Strength + Tabata (winded)
Saturday: Treadmill Run 3 miles (dead)
Sunday: Strength + Tabata
Except for one muddy trail run, all my runs were “a la mill”, which didn’t really bother me.
That’s Thing 2 heading to her friend’s house for trick-or-treat. They’re at that age where they still want candy but can’t be bothered with costumes.
Just because snow is not welcome here in October doesn’t mean it’s not pretty. At least the iced-over pond had thawed out by the time I took this pic.

The transition to an AutoImmune Paleo (AIP) diet is happening and I’m giving myself an A for the week. I’m only being strict about eliminating gluten and soy until the New Year, but still, it went well.
So many veggies. I never thought I’d be grateful for the giant bags of fresh, organic veggies at Costco (or use that many veggies for mostly myself) but here I am.
Coconut Aminos. It’s made from the aged sap of coconut blossoms and salt. It’s gluten- and soy-free and will be my substitute for soy sauce and Tamari. It’s a little sweeter than soy sauce but it works fine in marinades.
No cravings. Probably because I’m hell-bent on succeeding with this AIP thing, but staying away from Halloween candy was no problemo. I did have one piece just because, and I’m happy to say it tasted entirely too sweet.
Not Loving
While I’ve done really well diet-wise, by Thursday I felt completely depleted. Starving overnight even. While I was able to map out a food plan for the first few days of the week, by Thursday I was out of ideas (and food) and ended up with a salad with chicken from Chipotle for dinner. Planning and prep are going to be key to doing AutoImmune Paleo well and this seat-of-the-pants girl has a ways to go on that front.
Toward the end of the week, I started to really struggle with my workouts. my heart rate was sky high at a very low pace on Saturday’s run. I suspect my glycogen stores are depleted and maybe I’m switching over to fat burning?? Because I loathe tracking, the possibility of not taking in enough calories is real is well.
Super Loving
All-State Honor Band Festival. We spent much of the weekend enjoying Thing 2’s performances, which were amazing. She is a girl of very few words so I had no idea that, in addition to being first chair piccolo/flute (over 100 flutes auditioned, 20 got in), she was a featured soloist as well. Over the past year she’s been on an exciting trajectory with her music. She’s working with nationally-recognized conductors and getting opportunities I runfess I never imagined possible. She’s got the Chicago Flute Festival this coming weekend along with a Master Class. It’s a lot, I’m constantly driving her somewhere and I’m vary wary of burnout, but I’m doing my best to be supportive and help her go where her passion and talent take her.
How was your week? Are you a fan of turning back the clock? Congrats to everyone who ran NYCM this weekend!

I am still in disbelief that Chicago got so much snow this week!
Awesome job on transitioning to your new AutoImmune Paleo diet! I know that it’s all new to you but it sounds like you are mastering it pretty well so far 🙂

I’m a menu planner and it helps a ton, especially when the motivation to eat properly is low.
Congrats again to Jill–it’s pretty amazing what she’s doing!

So much snow! Your photos are really pretty though.
Interesting that you felt really tired towards the end of the week. Perhaps your body needs a little time to adjust. Well done for sticking to the AIP.
Ha, not a big fan of turning back the clock at all. I think it would be better for everyone to just keep the clocks as they are year round.

I was surprised to see just how much snow you guys received! I concur…it’s just too early. That is amazing how much success your daughter is enjoying at such a young age! SO many opportunities await her, it’s really exciting (says the former flutist herself). One good thing about turning back the clock was my daylight recovery run this morning 😉

I am sure that changing your diet so drastically is very hard to do. If anyone can though, it’s you!

I can’t believe you got that much snow! That picture is lovely, though – sunrise or sunset? I hope you figure out your diet soon. I know how hard that can be. The band festival sounds fantastic. Congrats again.

Oh, the snow…it’s just too early for that nonsense!
I can imagine making such a significant change to your diet must be hard. I always find I do better with my eating when I plan in advance.
Everything your daughter is doing sounds so exciting! Good for her…and to you mom for supporting her passion!

Congrats to your daughter on such a fantastic year with her music accomplishments!
Wow, that’s a lot of snow. We didn’t get our first frost until yesterday…

Can’t believe the snow! And very well done to your daughter – that’s amazing. And being aware of burnout will help, I’m sure.

That must be so hard to make those changes to your diet but it sounds like you are doing great! I can’t believe how much snow you got already. Hopefully it will warm up a bit again before winter arrives for good!

Thanks for the reminder of why I live in Southern California. I just wouldn’t do well in snow. Congrats to your daughter for her solo (and all the rest that she accomplished!). And also thanks for a new term to describe my cooking style, Seat of the Pants. Yep, that definitely fits!

I think its pretty normal in the first week to feel like you don’t have a lot of energy while your body adjust to different energy sources. You are doing great. I am kind of following your lead and just cutting out some things for now and possibly do Whole30 in January, after the holidays. Too stressful to try now but I am making some Whole30 recipes that are pretty good. My biggest thing is what to eat for breakfast. I am not a smoothie person, don’t care that much for eggs and dairy is out sooooo…….
Congrats to your daughter!!!! That’s awesome!

Congrats to your daughter!!! That is pretty amazing and awesome! Ugh, I hate the snow. Hope we don’t get more anytime soon. Or maybe even never. 🙂

We were in New York over the weekend and missed the snow here but of course the temperatures today are a stark reminder that winter is right around the corner. We’ve never done meal planning but I could see where it’s not just convenient, but necessary when trying to stick to a specific type of diet.

Premature snow is so the best phrase for it. It should be illegal before Thanksgiving
What a great winter sun photo though
Glad AIP going well for you so far.
