Here we are wrapping up the first official week of fall and Christmas is already busting out at Costco as well as my mailbox via the Pottery Barn catalog. Rush the seasons much? It was a single parenting week here, not that that’s a bad thing. Wrangling a 14 yr old is nothing like those toddler days. You just have constant taxi duties. Here’s how my training-for-nothing workouts went. You might notice I’ve been holding up my end of the Tabata bargain.
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 3 miles + Yoga
Wednesday: Strength + Jump Rope Tabata
Thursday: Run 3 miles
Friday: Run 2 miles +Tabata
Saturday: Run 3 miles + Tabata
Sunday: Strength + Stepmill Tabata
I thought my shoulder was feeling better. I’m calling it a strained trapezius muscle. The headache and pain radiating up my neck to my skull are mostly gone…with mostly being the operative word. I’m staying away from the bench press, push ups and any overhead strength work for now. I runfess I’m a little bit bummed the squat rack is not an issue. I’d love to skip that…
The news that stopped me in my tracks this week had to do with a certain “unwelcome visitor” on my trails. No sooner than I’d returned from my usual trail run on Thursday, did I receive an email saying a runner had been attacked and bitten by a coyote earlier that day on the trail less than a quarter mile from where this Instagram pic had just been taken. I see coyotes, deer, foxes all the time on the trails and typically they vanish into the woods when they hear me approach. What’s particularly disturbing in this instance is the coyote came up from behind the runner and it her in the back of the leg. Read this post for information about safety from wildlife on the trails.

Berlin Marathon memories. Seeing all the Berlin Marathon weekend posts and sharing in the excitement brings back all the feels of my own trip there two years ago. The airline bankruptcy made it a harrowing one. Sometimes the universe asks “how bad do you want it?” That was one of those times.

Doggy Day Out. Travelling on business or vacation? Here’s a really fun way to get some fresh air and exercise. The Doggy Day Out program encourages travelers to take dogs from local shelters on outings, field trips, hikes, even a sleepover or a dinner in a dog-friendly restaurant. It’s a meaningful way to volunteer for those who are short on time. The outings help dogs manage kennel stress, burn off energy and get more exposure in their communities. Doesn’t this sound fun? I just might be scoping out the shelter scene in Atlanta…just saying. Learn more about Doggy Day Out here.

Deena’s Out for Berlin. While Deena Kastor can likely get an entry to any World Marathon Major she pleases a helluva lot faster than the rest of us, I was still bummed to hear she tripped over a dog and broke her ankle a couple of weeks ago. Sadly her 6 WMM star will have to wait.
How was your week? Do you enjoy having the spouse away? Does Doggy Day Out sound fun?
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

had totally missed that re: Deena. So frustrating.
I thought it was interesting to read in Meb’s book how he was turned down by Boston once and lost Nike as his sponsor. Nice to see the “other” side of the running elite
Glad your shoulder is on the mend. I am so far behind I got the healing before the injury. LOL

Speaking of spouses away…The hubby’s “new” job (which he’s been doing for almost 10 months) has him out of town a couple nights each week. Is it bad that I kind of look forward to my single (dog) parenting each week, just a little? I mean…having the entire bed to myself is kind of nice 😉 I had not heard that about Deena…bummer! I remember seeing her in the first Spirit of the Marathon (?) movie, where several runners were highlighted on their Boston training. She had a nasty twisted ankle she was rehabbing for that, from tripping over a walnut (or something) in her back yard. She needs a plastic bubble LOL

My friend sent me a photo of all the Christmas trees in Costco earlier this week and I just had to laugh. What is so wrong about enjoying all the seasons/holidays in order??
That photo of Ozzy is so cute! Thanks for writing about Doggy Day Out – I’m going to check it out. It sounds like such a great idea!

My husband travels a lot for work. While it was definitely harder when I had little ones, sometimes now it’s easier. Dinners can be a lot simpler. I also kind of sleep better. Ssh don’t tell anyone I said that!

I didn’t hear that about Deena! So sad!
The coyotes are out in full force here. I swear, every day I get a coyote update on the neighborhood website.
Glad you’re working on the shoulder injury. I swear, it’s always something!

I love the idea of Doggy Day out. I used to travel for work a lot, and my nights on the road were so boring, I would have loved to explore the towns I was staying in with some four legged friends. I’m glad you’re feeling better this week, fingers crossed that “mostly” will soon be “completely”.

I heard about Deena. So bummed for her. But she always has a great attitude.
Hope your shoulder continues to improve.
I’m the traveler in the family.
I would enjoy the DvR to myself.

That is so creepy about the coyote! Are you planning to stay away from the trail for a bit? It will be so hard to know if he’s still around!
I was in a meeting last week talking about how its just different wrangling kids at different ages. Our kids ranged from 9 months to 17 years and they all brought their challenges. Honestly it sounds like it just gets harder as they get older lol!

I hadn’t heard about Deena! Proof that dumb accidents happen to the best of us. I bet she is so frustrated! That coyote attack is so scary! Especially hearing how it happened. She didn’t have a chance. When I’m out with Scooby, he senses something long before I see it — usually a cat, sometimes deer or a fox. I bet solo parenting with just one feels a lot different!

We keep hearing about coyotes in our area but fortunately I haven’t seen any.
I didn’t hear about Deena. Bummer.
Ozzy is so cute! Doggie Day Out is such a great idea.

I’m really surprised about the coyote attack! There have been rare sightings of them where I live and they are usually running away from people. In fact, one was stuck on the trail in front of me one day when I was running! He couldn’t find a way to get off the trail due to a fence and I was just following him in curiosity. I didn’t even think about him potentially hurting me at the time. He looked very frightened and out of place.

I hadn’t heard about Deena – what a bummer!
That coyote situation is pretty scary! I have only ever heard of them attacking when hunting as a pack. Please tell me you’re planning a little break from the trails!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
That’s so scary about the coyote attack & unusual. I’d kinda worry about rabies.
Yes, poor Deena! She is such a positive role model.
I was actually really looking forward to Mr. Judy being gone that week, but then I didn’t actually spend much time at home. 😔

Hey Marcia, sorry so late to the blog and to have missed so much. Well, you know the story so…
Such a bummer about Deena. I love her so much and it seems she often has “something” going on. But always bounces back with that amazing attitude she has.
I don’t have kids at home, but I usually am a bit off balance if Ron is away for work. Last time he was away I also took the week off and just made a whole bunch of plans!
