I runfess it feels kind of inappropriate to even share my workouts since, while I do have ZOOMA Great Lakes coming up in no less than 34 days, my focus is elsewhere and I’m not really training. My bad.
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Trail Run 5 miles
Wednesday: Sick
Thursday: Sick
Friday: Trail Run 5 miles
Saturday: Bike 15 miles
Sunday: Strength + Swim
The only drawback to having almost the entire family off on fabulous but exhausting adventures is the odds of getting sick are greatly increased. Thing 1 returned from Lolapalooza with a cold. Thing 2 returned from camp with the same and by mid-week I succumbed as well. Not before I got a fabulous trail run in though. Thankfully my cold was the intense but short-lived variety. I felt much better after just one tough day.
Let’s back up: After I left Empower Summer Camp, the Caveman and I drove the hour and a half North to Thing 2’s music camp in time to sign her out, pack up her cabin, have lunch and settle in for her performances.
Holy crow this camp was beautiful!
While Thing 1 is my “large and in charge” kid, Thing 2 is more of a “still waters run deep” kind of girl. She’s had her confidence shaken by bullies on more than one occasion and she’s notorious for quitting most of the activities she tries. She’s stuck with music for 3 years and counting now and I can’t help but think her experience at music camp will help fan the flames of her passion for music.
The symphony orchestra performed a program titled “New Year’s Eve in Vienna”, featuring songs from Johann Strauss Jr and Sr. Superb does not begin to cover it.
Out of 73 flutes at camp, Thing 2 was one of only two flutes to earn a spot in the Concert and Symphony Orchestras. There are four levels of bands below that. Of those two coveted flute spots, she was the first chair. I’m pretty sure that blew her mind and I hope it helps her understand how special she is. Talent + hard work + perseverance = how magic is made. I could not be more proud of her.
Loving
Matcha Fruit Bites from Jade Leaf Matcha are AMAZING! I tried samples at Empower Summer Camp and have already ordered more. Crazy delicious, they’re made from simple ingredients including real fruit, spirulina and curcumin. Some of these may be showing up in a college care package soon…just saying. Try them and save 20% with EMPOWER through August 16 only.
Not Loving
Throwback to our first official visit in spring, 2018. That is one hella gorgeous campus!
Thing 1 ships out to Georgia Tech this week. Selfishly I don’t love this cuz I’ll miss her but I know she’s going to have a freaking blast away at school so of course I’m over the moon happy for her. I’m already counting the days until parents’ weekend!
My flower containers before they got so hot and tired
While my vegetable garden is going gangbusters, my flower containers are so very tired and dragging from the heat and dry conditions. It’s too early to bring in the fall asters and mums so I’m not sure what else I can do besides deadhead, fertilize and keep the water coming. Oh well.
How was your week? Have you had a summer cold this year? Any ideas for college care package goodies?
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

I am glad that your cold was short lived – summer colds are the absolute worst!
What an awesome accomplishment for your daughter! Like you mentioned, I hope that the experience at camp will give her a boost of confidence and help her really embrace her musical talents!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Wowza congrats to your daughter on first chair! Sure to be a huge confidence boost for her!
I can understand totally understand that mix of feelings around your daughter leaving for college – so hard to let them go, but so exciting the great next chapter that awaits them, right?
Coco says
Huge congrats to your daughter. Hopefully she will understand how special she is — both with the talent and the perseverance! That concert sounds wonderful– and in such a lovely setting. My flowers are wilting because I am NOT keeping the water coming. The mosquitoes have won. 🙁

Glad your cold passed quickly – and congrats to Think 2 – what an achievement.
Care package – or bring with on move in: good tissues (college ones are shit), cookies – Insomnia may or may not ship there. I was going to say fun stationery but I am An Old and don’t think that’s a thing anymore

Oh, bummer on the cold! Glad it was short-lived. Somehow, I have avoided any sickness for quite some time…I’m thinking the last was a weird cold/gasping cough that hit me just before Cherry Blossom (early April), Thankfully, Nurse Deborah helped me cope with that while I was in DC LOL Hugs to you…the college send-off is a major milestone, for both the student and their parents. And, HUGE congrats to Thing 2 and her flute talent!! That’s quite impressive for what she accomplished at camp!

How exciting for your daughter! I used to love when my parents included my favorite snacks in my college care package. My mom also used to buy me little stocking stuffer sized goodies, like shower gels, bath bombs, small travel sized makeup products, face wipes and sometimes little stuffed animals (I collected frogs and owls). It definitely made the dorms feel more like home!
angela @ happy fit mama says
That is so amazing about your daughter! Congrats to her! Good luck on sending THing 1 off to college. I get a little teary eyed thinking of my own kids going off to college and they are only 9…lol!
Deborah Brooks says
Aww it’s hard to send them off to school especially the first time. I sent my daughter cute pj’s sets and socks. You will be ok it just takes some getting used to. Parent’s weekend will come quickly! I take my son back to school next week. Not ready to do that yet either!
Shathiso says
So glad Thing 2 has found something she really joys and what a confidence booster for earning a spot in the concert out of 73 flutes! Bravo! Best of luck to Thing 1 (and you guys too!) as she starts this new chapter in life.

Summer colds are the worst! I feel like every patient I’ve seen this week has had that cold! The little ones are getting fevers with it. And don’t even get me started about my lack of running…
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Kudos to Thing 2 (and 1 of course). I’m sure her confidence will really be bolstered by that experience. I’m equally sure that having Thing 1 off to college is going to be difficult for you, but you do have to let them go and test their wings before they eventually fly away on their own. Never easy, though, I’m sure.
Glad to hear the cold was short-lived. My sister & her husband have them, apparently. Knock on wood, nope, not here, at least not now.
I was just reading Kaphas tend to get sick in the Spring — which is totally in line with what happens to me — so weird. They also don’t remember their dreams, and nope, I rarely do.
The Accidental Marathoner says
Congratulations to both of your daughters! You definitely have lots to be proud of. Bummer about the cold, but at least it was short-lived. I’m more of a fall gal, and this horrible humid summer weather hasn’t done much to convince me otherwise.
Jenny says
What music camp did your daughter go to? My son is also a musician and I’m always looking for new camps for him. Your daughter must be VERY good! Flute is a competitive instrument- there are a lot of great players out there so for her to make first chair in the orchestra is a huge accomplishment.
Laurie says
So sorry to read about your daughter’s experience with bullies. I hope she finds her passion (and some nice friends) through her music. Sometimes it just takes a while to find something that clicks with some kids. I can’t believe it’s back to school time already! It seems to get earlier each year. Hope you are feeling better!
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Aw congrats to your daughter on making first chair! I remember back to my band days when that was a big deal! Glad the cold was short-lived, but two trail runs in a week sounds lovely.
Betsy says
It was so fun seeing you at camp and those matcha bites were amazing! Like adultified fruit snacks! I also really liked the pb&j bars we got in the bag too. Those would be great for a college care package.
Allie says
That is amazing about your daughter’s musical talent! I’m hoping my boys find their niche since they have almost zero interest in sports (besides skiing) and mostly love drawing and creating comic books but refuse to take drawing lessons or classes – oy!!!
Good luck getting your older daughter off to college! That has to be SO hard for everyone, even though it’s a happy thing, it’s stressful and a huge change.
Glad your cold was short-lived and hopefully you can get a few more great runs in this week if the humidity continues to stay low!
Black Knight says
Congrats to your daughters! Glad your cold has gone so you haven’t lose many workouts.
5 miles of trail after the cold is a very good job!
Zenaida Arroyo says
Your daughters are amazing! Congrats to both of them. Going away to college is exciting and nerve wrecking. I have no idea how my parents felt since I was the first one to go away. Maybe you can include some bath products and anything with chocolate or whatever flavor she likes. How about some nice pens?
No summer cold for me but I’ve had them before and they’re horrible. Glad you are feeling better.
Renée says
ah so sorry to her about getting sick!! that sucks but it is expected for sure. amazing job done for thing 2 and first chair flute! I really really hope she sticks to it no matter what. I played the violin in school but never had a lot of self-confidence; I went away and lived in Texas for 2 years and lived with my dad and when I came back I blew the entire orchestra away. I was very often first (or second) chair and it was an amazing time for me. BUT… I still lacked self-confidence in other areas and had some traumatic things happen to me and I actually stopped playing the violin all together when I finished high school. I really wish I hadn’t. If I have any regrets at all in my life (which I really try not to do!!) it would be that I stopped playing the violin because I really did have talent and that I stopped singing in the choir. I love music so I’ve no idea what possessed me to stop.
exciting times for thing 1 – hopefully she settles in quickly and has a great time but misses you as well!
