Happy Marathon Monday weekend! Are you as excited about the Paris and Boston Marathons as I am? Most of all, I hope the Boston forecast improves cuz that course is tough enough with ideal conditions. For me the London Marathon Taper continues. Here’s how my week in workouts went.
Remember that long run last weekend that wasn’t as long as I’d wanted? I added some miles to my run on Tuesday to make up for it. It may make no difference whatsoever to the outcome in London but I did it wonders for my mental game.
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 12 miles
Wednesday: Strength/core
Thursday: 4 miles treadmill speedwork alternating 400m/800m
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Trail run 10 miles
Sunday: CrossFit Lite. Upper body only.
It’s all fun and games until your knee acts up
All was going SO well, until that weekend trail run. I took refuge on the trails because the wind around here has been brutal lately. The run was perfection until mile 8.5 or so. At that time I noticed the inner back of my right knee, the one that had the popliteus injury over a year ago and was “snapping” post Tokyo Marathon, was not right. Recently it had quieted down and I assumed I was recovered and good to go. Now not so much. I reverted to a walk/run at 8.5, then a full on walk the last half mile or so to get back to my car. The last thing I need is to push my knee too far and jeopardize everything in London. Good God I hope I didn’t already do that.
In hindsight the trails require much more climbing than I am used to this early in the season. While they were dry and in decent condition, they were full of big divots from muddier times that made them more challenging than usual. I’m sure my knee did not appreciate either.
I RICE’d my knee most of the day and it felt much better, albeit not perfect. By the evening I could detect minor swelling. It’s not painful per se but there’s a whisper of instability. Research with Dr. Google tells me if tendons/ligaments/muscles are strained in that PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) area there’s nothing to do but rest and give it time. For now, I’m shutting down running, heading to Dr. Miracle, and hoping for the best. I swear it cannot be easy.

Impossible Burger. I told you before how challenging it is to have a 13 yr old vegetarian in the house who eats basically no veggies. This week I got her to try a veggie burger that she actually LIKED!!! I have to agree it was very “meaty” tasting and who can argue with 27g plant protein?

Mom Nature needs her head examined
Our weather. After a couple of very nice teaser days, we got slapped with snow and high winds. This is Chiberia after all. It’s been so cold spectating Thing 1’s track meets and the Invitational that was supposed to happen on Friday was cancelled due to cold and 50 mph winds. Today 5″ of snow is in progress. Crazy.
My garbage disposal died. I should say I inadvertently killed it. Somehow I had 2 of those springlike gizmos in my shaker cup vs 1. When I washed out the cup I made sure to retrieve ONE springlike mixer thing and apparently the other extra one slid down the drain. Once the disposal was turned on it got ugly. Very ugly. RIP disposal.
A star gymnast from Auburn broke both her legs during her floor exercise at a competition last week. It was one of those things I didn’t wanna see but couldn’t quite look away, and then was sorry I did. To their credit the camera pulled away to a wider angle pretty quickly but sweet Jesus I feel awful for her. And that her horrific injury has to be viral.
How was your week? Congratulations Paris Marathoners! Good luck Boston runners!

Okay I am so sorry about the garbage disposal but the story of how it died was pretty funny! Hoping your knee simmers down and everything feels 100%!!!!
Wendy says
Um, yeah, the weather. I have had this anxious, feel like I’m going to cry feeling all day. Enough!
You are such a wise runner–I have no doubt that you’ll be fine for London!
I saw that gymnastic video and sent it off to my son. Yikes!

Fingers crossed that you can get your knee to calm down – it sounds like you have a good plan. I’ve been reading about the Impossible Burger but am a bit wary to try it because the first/last fake burger I tried (Beyond Meat) was horrible. I will eat almost anything I cook, but I could not choke it down. I’m happy with my un-meat tasting Morningstar veggieburgers. 😉

I have not seen the video, but did see something brief on the news. That’s an image I don’t want in my head because it will never go away. UGH. Thankfully, my area of Iowa missed all the snow, but we did have all the wind and frigid temps. Momma N really is a piece of work. Hoping all things work out for that knee, Marcia. You’re in peak condition, so things should still go smoothly if you need a brief running hiatus, right? Gosh, I’ll be thinking of you. Thanks for joining us on the link-up!

I thankfully was not watching at the time, but I feel sorry for anyone who has things like that going viral these days. That’s awful. Most of the time I seriously don’t care if I see the news or not.
5”? Shudders. We only really had the one nice day Saturday but it’s nowhere near that cold here & we are thankfully snow free. My sympathies. Here the rain is *supposed* to end midday & i’m hoping Boston gets the same since it starts later in the day. But unfortunately I don’t think it’l Be ideal.
Here’s to Dr. Miracle working his miracles on you again!

I am excited for tomorrow and cannot wait to get to work to watch it. I show it to my kids on the SmartBoard.
Almost time for you to go to London! Cannot wait to see how it goes.
I will not see that video because it will probably haunt me for the rest of my life. No.
Deborah Brooks says
The impossible burgers are amazing! Hope that knee thing is not a thing. You have had a great training cycle so fingers crossed that with a little rest things are feeling better. Thanks for linking up!
Kim G says
So sorry to hear about your knee but it sounds like you are totally doing the right thing. Hopefully any swelling goes down soon (keeping my fingers crossed for you).
I can’t believe that you’re STILL getting snow! We dealt with 100% humidity and 70+ temps yesterday (which felt super duper hot).
I saw the article about that gymnast but I didn’t play the video. I knew that once I saw that, I wouldn’t be able to unsee it!
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Yikes, I hope your knee stays ok through London! I also LOVE the Impossible Burger and I am super excited to see it more frequently on menus!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I don’t even know what to say about 5″ of snow! I feel for the Boston runners tomorrow – the only good thing is it will be relatively warm (compared to the 40s and gusting winds of last year).
You’re playing it smart with the extra rest. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you that Dr. Miracle will work his magic!!

My husband showed me the video of the girl who broke her legs. Yowza!!! I hope all is well with your knee and Dr. Miracle does all the right things. Fingers crossed!
Cari says
I’m with Michelle giggling at your tale of the disposal’s woe. Those springs are evil
Hope you heard the knee whinging in time and it behaves.
That gymnast video is brutal
Love the feet off the ground photo!
Jessie says
I hope your injury isn’t so serious 🙁 so close to London too! Crossing all fingers and toes
Renée says
ugh on the knee!!!! I hope it subsides again. it’s too close to race day now!!
I can NOT believe it snowed again in Chicago!! unreal!
I do love a good veggie burger, even if I’m a meat eater. Things have really improved since the days I didn’t eat meat!!
Darlene says
Hooray for doctors called Dr Miracle. There is a reason for his name.
So happy we did not get your snow… we got a surprise – like 70 humid degrees for my race – not complaining – better than rain.
I have a feeling that your race in London will be great!!! even sunshine rather than cold rain.
Liz Dexter says
Hope your knee calms down, you know you have logged the miles for London so you can rest it.
Eeps to the gym injury and I’ve just seen in my head one from the last Olympics that I can’t ever un-see!
Black Knight says
I hope that your knee gets well in time for London….. and remember, the Queen is waiting for you to pay homage.
In Chicago snow and here shining sun!!!!!
