We’re officially under the 30 day mark until the London Marathon. That went fast, didn’t it? You might think I’d be all gung-ho with my training. It’s my 6th and final World Marathon Major after all. You’d be wrong. Let’s just say spring break got in the way.
London Marathon Countdown: 29 days
Here’s how my sparse week of workouts went:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 6 miles, headed to Atlanta
Wednesday: Atlanta fun
Thursday: Planned to run in Piedmont Park but sleep won out
Friday: Georgia Tech Shadow Day
Saturday: Rest (travel home)
Sunday: Run 10 miles
While I did more than my share of walking in Atlanta, walking is great but it is not running. Oh well. We went to Atlanta for Shadow Day at Georgia Tech, where Thing 1 will be attending school come August. It was wonderful to have gorgeous temps in the 70s in Atlanta, although it was freezing and raw as usual when we returned to Chicago.
Hopefully we’ll be enjoying blossoms like these sometime soon. One can dream.
The incoming Freshmen went through a typical day at Georgia Tech while us parents toured the campus and had Q& A sessions with student ambassadors, academic advisors and the like. It was a wonderful and informative experience.
We did our share of horsing around in Atlanta as well.
VIP tour of Coca-Cola HQ, complete with a tasting of most of the hundreds of different beverages the company makes for consumption around the world. Greece’s Pineapple Fanta may have been my fave. South Africa also has something I liked quite a bit.
VIP tour of CNN. Of course I had to do a press conference. At least a fake one…Wolf Blitzer has nothing on me.
Quality time kicking back and thawing out from a long Chiberian winter in Centennial Olympic Park
We hit up Ponce City Market and it’s food halls. Too much good food to mention.
Overall it was a great trip. Thing 1 will be on her own soon enough, until then we’re savoring our time together. We’ve already booked our hotel for Homecoming weekend in October. Atlanta is a city I know well and love deeply. I think Thing 1 is going to love her time there.
Loving
Fré Recover Me. A better name for this might be Beauty Sleep in a Bottle. Since hitting “a certain age” I’ve struggled with under eye puffiness and dark circles. Using Recover Me night cream at bedtime yielded results I never expected. My skin looks brighter, more refreshed and those heinous dark circles and puffiness are noticeably diminished. Like all Fré products, it’s all natural, derived from the Argan tree. 3/31 is the LAST DAY to save 30% on the Recover Set, which includes a 90-day supply of all of my favorites: Purify Me Cleanser, Revive Me Replenishing Serum and Recover Me Night Cream. Shipping to the US and Canada is free! Check out Fré Skincare here and be sure to use RUNDEF for the 30% discount.
Green Book. Thanks to Wendy’s recommendation, we enjoyed this one. Was it worthy of the Academy Award for Best Picture? Not sure. But it’s still a good movie.
The Boston Energy. There’s nothing quite like the electric in the air when the Boston Marathon is approaching and this year is no different. Can you feel it? I hope they have better weather this year.
Not Loving
Off-the-leash eating. If you saw my Insta Stories this past week you know what I’m referring to. We were on vacation and all and normally I wouldn’t bat an eye at the stuff I ate while in Atlanta but let’s just say eating that way PLUS not running = no bueno.
Charity Gala. I’ve gotta get all gussied up this coming weekend for a fancy night out. While I’m sure it’ll be fun, the thought of a formal affair just makes me tired. If I could sit around in running gear or at least wear running shoes, I’d be so much happier not to mention more comfortable.
How was your week? Is it spring break where you are? Have you been to Atlanta?
I’m linking up with Kim and Deborah for the Weekly Run Down. Join us!

Glad that you had a fun time in Atlanta! That’s such an awesome city for college – I’m sure your daughter will have such an amazing experience there!
Laurie says
Be sure to post a picture of you all gussied up! I love to see my running friends at parties or out on the town. We all look so different with our hair done and maybe even wearing some makeup! 🙂
What is next after you finish all of the world majors?

I have only been in the Atlanta airport and never explored around. Looks like a fun city to go to school in. I enjoyed Green Book and did think it was oscar worthy. I fell asleep during the Favorite and did not get why people loved that one. Oh well! I guess that’s why I am not on the Oscar committee
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
So glad you had a great trip! I haven’t been to Atlanta in ages – it’s a great city. Hope your daughter really enjoys it!
Wendy says
Does that fancy outing include high heels? That would be a no for me. Glad you enjoyed Green Book. Was it Oscar worthy? I think Viggo Mortenson killed it. I kinda loved it!
I’m so glad that Maddi picked a school where you love the city. That’s how I felt about Madison. I could pretty much live there but I don’t think Matthew would like that at all! LOL

What a fun time in Atlanta! It’s such a fun city and now you have an excuse to go there more. And holy cow – how did London get so close?!?!
Kimberly Hatting says
I love your CNN interview shot. I’ll be flying through Atlanta en route to DC on Thursday, but will only be inside the airport for a short while between flights. We’ve driven through many times, though. I’d love to spend some time there. Looks like a great (though busy) Spring Break! Thanks for linking with us!!

You deserve a nice, warm spring break — and fun family times. That was so smart to book a hotel room for homecoming — make sure you do the same for graduation weekend. We ended up with reservations at a Motel 8 and thankfully could switch at the last minute to the ^much^ nicer Day’s Inn across the street ,,,,

When I lived in TN we went to atlanta frequently! I wished we had gone when the olympics were there too. My brother now lives in Atlanta and he loves it.
Thelma says
Oh how I remember that Boston day so well. SO MUCH FUN! (happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me….. :)).
I love Atlanta and my half PR is from that crazy, hilly course (ran it 3x!). I’m so glad to hear that Thing 1 is feeling good about her decision. Is going to be so bittersweet to see her go (but trust me, it does get easier as the weeks fly by).
I’m so bummed I won’t be with you in London. Our dreams never came through :(. I am super excited for you though.

Glad you had fun in Atlanta. Now Italy is waiting for a press conference of yours! The pic in Boston is wonderful: a great moment!

I’ll bet that having a recovery week will actually help in the “long run”. I do love that turn of phrase. 🙂
I have actually never been IN Atlanta, just through the airport. Savannah was my first real stay ever in GA.
I absolutely felt Green Book was Oscar worthy (although I did not see all the films nominated).
Denise says
Atlanta looks nice. I’ve never been. London is going to be here before you know it, I’m so excited for you!
Darlene says
I’ve been to Atlanta but it was during my pre-running days.
I bet you’ll get in a lot of running (or racing) during the next 4 years.
Empty nesters don’t even realize when it is spring break LOL
Post pics of you getting gussied up.
I know what you mean…just had a wedding. Stressful getting dressed up.
Allie says
I absolutely love Atlanta but have not been there in years. I love that “thing 1” is going to school there so you can visit often! Hope you’re in re-set mode and the food + drink binge isn’t haunting you this week as you prep for London – woot woot!!!
Renée says
still not worried about you in London – you’ve done loads of training, Marcia, AND just ran Tokyo. London is going to happen and you are going to be fine. Fine + a 6-Star!!
glad you had a great time in Hotlanta! and these trips are meant for a bit of indulgence.
Zenaida Arroyo says
Haha, I also love being in running shoes.
I’ve been there once years ago but do not remember too much about it. I’ve been wanting to go back there to run a half marathon. Maybe we can plan one together?
I am excited to watch the Boston Marathon! I always show it on the SmartBoard so my kids could watch it too. The year Meb won was the best!
Lisa @ TechChick Adventures says
Atlanta is a great place! I’ll be visiting colleges in a few short years with my daughter. Your visit sounded very promising!
Cari says
I hear you on formal attire. No thanks
Have an itching to go to Atlanta – Coke, Jimmy Carter library and the Civil Rights museum.
Shathiso says
What a lovely spring break and Atlanta looks like so much fun too! Can’t believe World Number 6 is less than a month away!
Liz Dexter says
I love Atlanta, had a wonderful few days there back in the last millennium!! I also went to CNN and the Coca-Cola museum!
If this is your last major, is there a special thing where you pick up your majors medal, too? I’ve spectated London a few times but don’t know how that works.
Oh, and I will say this nearer the time but do look out for Kings Heath Running Club and Bournville Harriers runners, if you chat to any the KHRC (orange top with a black lion or vice versa) will know me and the Bournville (teal) might do. I know an awful lot of people doing the race; it’s very exciting!
