It was a mild winter, “was” being the operative word here. Mild went to hell in a handbasket and now the words Polar and Vortex are being tossed around. Copious amounts of snow and a most unwelcome dip to sub-zero temperatures sent me cowering on my treadmill. The Tokyo Marathon is one month away after all. Gulp. My mantra is No Broken Legs.
Here’s how the week in workouts went:
Monday: Rest (super sore from Sunday’s CrossFit)
Tuesday: Run 2 miles (short on time)+ quick strength training (still sore but running felt ok)
Wednesday: Run 5 miles, speedwork of some kind, can’t recall (still sore WTF)
Thursday: Strength training, prehab, corework
Friday: Plyo Intervals, including 2 miles of running
Saturday: 16 treadmill miles
Sunday: Kinder gentler CrossFit, prehab, corework
Beautiful to look at but not so great for marathon training
All of my workouts, except for CrossFit Sunday, were done at home in the pain cave and on the treadmill. My treadmill turned 18 years old this month. I’m so grateful for how long it’s lasted. I’ve certainly put my share of miles on it over the years.
When I woke to -15 degrees on Saturday, I knew an outdoor run was not in the cards. I couldn’t bring myself to head to the gym to run my 16 miler on a Woodway treadmill, so to the pain cave I went. My vintage mill handled 16 like a trooper. With the way the weather is looking for the week ahead, I may very well be running long on the treadmill again. It’s not fun but it’s not impossible either. Overcoming obstacles is how we build character and confidence.
In non-running news, on Friday evening at 6:30 pm, the last of the workmen vacated the premises. At last. Our home renovations are officially finito. I feel like there should be a closing ceremony/celebration for that. It’s been an arduous 3 months.
This was the kids’ playroom. I claimed it as my office/personal space. It’s the first time in 20+ years I’ve had a space that is all mine. It’s not fully finished yet but it’s coming along nicely.

Love your office. Way to get it done!!

Huge props to you on that 18-miler on the ‘mill! Major badazz points earned on that conquest! I started to strip the wallpaper in one of the kids’ “old” bedrooms (in hopes of making it into an office for myself)…only the paper didn’t come off easily and I bailed on the project (like 10 years ago). That was long before my days of long- distance running/training, blogging and full-time out-of-the house employment, so my “free” time to do such projects on my own has dwindled. #excuses Your office looks beautiful!
Allie says
Hooray for the end of the workers in your house!!! And also for claiming a space all your own…what does that feel like? And omg to 16 miles on a treadmill. You are a better person than I am. I think I ran 14 on a ‘mill once but a friend did it next to me at the gym so it was more do-able. But – as you said, it does build character!! Good for you!!
Wendy says
That office is everything! Congrats to getting those workers out. I wish you would have sent them to my house! My worker doesn’t want to work.
I think the longest run I’ve ever done on the mill was 11 miles. Kudos to you for that 16 miler! I can’t believe Tokyo is only a month away..
Erica @ Erica Finds says
The office looks great! Mine is a nook but I love it!
I ran the F3 Half on Saturday. Temps were above zero but we were saved b/c not much wind and some sun. It was a bit nuts! I’ve done up to 18 miles on the mill. It’s bearable for me if there’s good TV!!
Coco says
That snow sure is beautiful to look at! I think my treadmill might be about the same age as yours. Mine has been neglected since I joined Orange Theory and get my treadmill fix there.

Nice job knocking out those 16 miles on the treadmill – that’s no easy task for sure! You are definitely doing the right thing and playing it smart by running on the treadmill. No need to possibly slip and fall on the ice so close to race day.
I know you must be so happy that the renovations are done! I like the look of your new personal space – it looks very zen and relaxing 🙂
Debbie says
No polar vortex here, thank goodness. I’d be lost if the weather was that cold! It’s so nice that you have your own space. There are only two of us in the house but I really appreciate having a place to go when I need my own quiet time.
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
Oh man, high five to you for getting 16 done on the treadmill! My current personal distance record on the treadmill is six miles, but I expect I’ll break that this afternoon (I have 6.5 on my calendar, and that’s obviously not happening outside with all of this snow!). I avoid the treadmill like the plague, but I haven’t run outside in over a week at this point. I’m certainly learning a lot of treadmill survival techniques!
Darlene says
OMG – 16 miles on the treadmill. I only managed 2 and cried uncle.
We have a storm coming too and then sub zero temps. This really sucks.
I’m just trying to survive. So far so good.
Michelle C says
I think I have done 10 miles on the mill but that was it! Congrats on your 16 miler! I hear you on the broken legs, I am so tired of ICE!
The Accidental Marathoner says
I did a few treadmill runs this past week in preparation for the Surf City Half on Sunday. Dealing with multiple cancellations out of O’Hare this morning (preceded by 3 canceled taxis). I’m on my way to Cincinnati so I am obviously on a plane to Dallas right now because that makes sense, right? Weather permitting, I get home from Cincinnati late Thursday night and then have an early flight to California Friday morning. WTH was I thinking???
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Your new space looks beautiful! It must feel great to have the workmen out of your house.
And huge props to you for getting 16 done on the mill! That is definitely mental toughness and determination. Given what I’ve seen of the forecast it looks like there will be more treadmill miles to come 🙁 I’m counting the days till Spring!
Cathy says
Love the office! Everybody needs their own personal space imo. Congrats on finally getting yours. Wow, a month away til Tokyo??? Exciting!!
Deborah Brooks says
I don’t know how I missed your post yesterday! I am not sure I could ever run 16 miles on a treadmill. You are stronger than I am! Glad all your workers are finished up ad everything is back in place. Good luck w the cold this week Brrr
Cari says
Yay on finished renos. Mom did the same with our playroom and the den became a library — I think I’d have been AOK with the latter as a kid
This weather is redonkulous. Great mantra – stay safe
I love my treadmill studio’s woodways — I wish my gym had them
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Well done with the 16er on the treadmill. It’s nice that you have a
pain cave” at home and don’t have to worry about traveling to the gym. Stay warm this week!
Renée says
I feel so so bad for you guys. I mean it’s just insane in Chicago right now. I still think you are a total badass for doing 16 miles on the treadmill.
your new space looks great ! isn’t it wonderful to reclaim space!! we did that in the summer and I’m really enjoying my tiny exercise area!

There are 2 spare bedrooms in this house, so we each have one. Mine is essentially a glorified closet. It also became Gizmo’s sanctuary over the last 6 months or so. We had to move the litterboxes upstairs because the stairs had become so hard for him, and I also moved beds & boxes in there. He liked to go in there when he didn’t want to get some peace & quiet, and that is, indeed, where we said one last goodbye to him. It’s my room, but now, I guess, I’ll always think of it as Giz’s room.
When we first set him up in there, Lola wanted to go exploring in there, too. That litterbox . . . Mr. Judy had rigged something up that basically kept her out — she could definitely have gotten in there if she wanted to, but she learned that it was not her room. And now the door is closed again.
Ok, sorry for going on about me . . .
Anyway, congrats on getting those contractors out of there AND getting your long run done on the mill! I will embrace my treadmill, obviously, but I am grateful I’ve never had to run that far on it.
