Can I just come out and say it? Marathon training through the holidays is no picnic. No picnic at all. There are plenty of articles out there, filled with tips to help you succeed. Get your workout in early they say. Hydrate well they say. Despite my best intentions and plenty of motivation, most of my workouts this week were either done by the skin of my teeth or cut short.
Monday: Rest/yoga
Tuesday: Run 5 miles
Wednesday: Strength + Dexascan + Chiro appt
Thursday: Run 5.5 miles (wanted 6)
Friday: Strength/core/bootywork
Saturday: Run 12 miles (wanted 15)
Sunday: CrossFit + Bootywork
The holidays are partly to blame for my coming up short, so is the early onset cold weather. Silly me delayed Saturday’s long run to let it warm up a tad, plus the holiday party we went to the night before had me out way past my geriatric bedtime. Then Thing 2 woke up wanting pancakes. It was no surprise then when I ran out of time because I needed to take Thing 2 to a holiday flute concert rehearsal.
The newly refreshed family room, starring the sofa we waited months for.
Our home renovations are a challenge as well. Wanna make sure delivery guys shows up in a timely fashion? Just go for a run. I had a delivery scheduled (at last the sofa!) to arrive on Thursday morning but when I got the robocall during mile 4 that said they’d be there in 10 minutes and it was still 30 minutes before the scheduled “delivery window”. I had to high-tail my sweaty self back home. Then there was the “truck” coming to pickup something that was delivered in error and bring the right thing. Then the painter who’d be there…you get the idea. First world problems.
Then the heat decided to quit. When you have your floors removed and new ones installed, there’s dust. Lots of it. It clogs the furnace air filter. A safety switch trips and shuts the whole thing down. It doesn’t care that its 15 degrees out. I suppose freezing is better than a fire but still. At least I’ve got pups to spoon with.
Ozzy is ready to spoon in his new pjs.
This week and next will likely be spent on the treadmill since the painters are planning on being here 9 days. The Ozzypup will torment the painters wile I’m out running or bark incessantly if I crate him up. Hopefully one of these weeks (soon!) I’ll be able to hit my stride and settle into this marathon training cycle.
How was your week? Ever train through the holiday season? How do you fit in your workouts when all hell breaks loose? Were you impacted by winter storm Diego?
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I’m sure its tough to train right now! The only time I trained through the holidays was for the Houston Marathon but I was in taper mode during the actual holidays. You still got in alot of good workouts!
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
I don’t see how you could train through the holidays…working in retail would make that so stressful for me. I’ve been working lots and even going in on my days off lately, so its a crazy time of year for me! Hopefully after the holiday craziness is over you will have a better routine going with less interruptions.

Enjoy your new family room! It is tough to train and maintain even through the holidays. Just do the best you can! You got this girl

Oh my gosh, you have so much going on! My mom’s furnace died on Friday. Luckily she was able to get an emergency/temporary repairs. You have been having a time with delivery windows. At least they do call first. Your family room looks lovely. I want pancakes too!

Ugh. See, that’s why we don’t renovate. Just kidding. My hubs fights me on it. We so need to get new carpet and sofas.
I don’t know if you can steal away next Thursday for lunch (the 20th) but I’d love to catch up! Let me know.

I love Ozzy’s pajamas. So cute
I do not know how parents handle training – I barely get in my runs and I only have myself to worry about
Your family room looks amazing

Ugh, Marcia, kudos to you for training, period, through the holidays. Granted, you have two very good reasons to do so 😉 I have never, ever, trained through the winter for anything. I’m usually coming off of a fall marathon (or something major), so I relish the winter months as my off-season. I do the run streak (at the bare minimum), and that’s pretty much it. Hang in there…. 😉

I’ve never had to train through the holidays but it would be so tough! I typically find myself pulling back this time of year and am ready to dive in again in the new year. But it’s definitely doable. You’ll get through it!
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Wow, you’ve certainly had a week of craziness! The best thing to do is just kind of laugh and not let it make you too anxious – it’s still plenty early in the cycle!

I’ve thankfully never trained through the holidays. Training wrapped up right before or didn’t kick off until right after. Perfect timing! I love the new sofa. It seems like just the right spot to recover from a long run. Lol!

OMG woman you have so much going on!! The room looks gorgeous though 🙂 And I know what you mean about delivery people or construction workers, they are either early or insanely late…so frustrating! And your dog in those pj’s is about the cutest thing I have ever seen!

I feel you. Our downstairs heat is out right now. They had to order a part. Brrrr,
Marathon training is no joke to begin with. Throw in the holiday stress and renovations and you’ve become super woman. Nine days for painters? Heavens! Hang in there. Thanks for linking!

Love the sofa! We are getting ready to re-do our backyard so I have patio furniture in my dining room and front porch. Not sure where the Christmas tree is going to go.
At least you have the treadmill option for training and that cute little dog to cuddle with to stay warm. Hang in there, it will all be worth it!

This is the first in a while that I’m training through the holidays, and it’s not easy! It’s dark early in the mornings and now when I get home. My time seems crunched, and sometimes all i want to do is bundle under the blankets on the couch!
Kim G says
It’s so hard to train during the holidays but I really think you are doing a great job so far.
Ozzy’s pajamas are just too cute! I actually have Old Navy pajamas with the same pattern, lol.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
First of all – Ozzy in those PJs – too stinkin’ cute!
You’ve definitely got a lot going on! I have never tried training through the holidays cause…well…life 😉 But I’ve also never had a reason as good as yours!
The new family room looks great! Enjoy it!

I hear you on the home reno. I bought a new comforter about two years ago, which turned into ‘we really need new bedroom furniture’, then ‘boy, we really need to replace all of the carpeting’, then ‘shouldn’t we repaint?’, etc. etc. etc. We were dragged completely down the rabbit hole and my $150 comforter wound up costing over $17,000! Good for you for getting your workouts and runs in. I’ve been doing a decent but not great job. I’m a work in progress!
