Old man winter you are here before your time. Typically I don’t mind snow, but when it shows up early it’s like when party guests are on your doorstep and you’re still vacuuming, NOT COOL! Here’s how week one of Tokyo Marathon training shook out:
Monday: Yoga
Tuesday: 400m repeats on the mill
Wednesday: Cardio Barre & Chiro appt
Thursday: 6 miles progression run (what??)
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Strength training
Sunday: Run 12 miles (kicked my behind)

Spin class fail. The plan was to hit up a spin class on Wednesdays and right out of the box I didn’t. To be fair I was scrambling with urgent work stuff, but if I’d been better prepared, I’d have been able to get out and over there in time. I did make it to a booty busting Barre class so it’s not all bad.
We went from fall…
to winter…complete with wind chill of 8 degrees…in 24 hours.
Premature winter weather. Worse than the snow and cold though is the dang wind. A feels-like temp in the single digits is not a runner’s best friend. Especially a runner with summer-thin blood.
The breakup. Since the shoe debacle that occurred in the rain at Sea Wheeze, I’ve tried wearing my Mizunos on a few occasions only to have them start to irritate my feet as soon as 5 miles. There’s no way I’m going to be able to rely on them for marathon training so I’m back in my trusty Asics Nimbus for long runs. Sigh. They’re a little clunky but I do appreciate their pillowy soft ride.

I’m released from Chiro care, although I’m going to be visiting once a month throughout marathon training. Since that first adjustment last week my hip (knock wood) has been perfect. Like I never had an issue. At this week’s appointment I didn’t crack as much as previously but the doc used her elbow to really dig into the side of my hip and release something or other. The next day I threw down a run better than I’d seen in years. I think my mobility has improved since seeing the Chiro. It amazes me how they can find misalignments and knots and work them right out.
New patterns and a sale at Spandits. Bandits and Banditos (fleece-lined headbands) are on sale ($7 off) now thru Thanksgiving. These are SO perfect for winter and a great stocking stuffer. Remember SPANDITSLOVE saves you 10% more. Tell them I sent you.
Bohemian Rhapsody. While I knew nothing about Queen back in the day, I certainly knew their music. Seeing this movie transported me back in time. Loved this one!
Finally…
The “big” announcement that wasn’t. The World Marathon Majors teased us for days to watch for their “big” announcement on Monday. I speculated they were adding a race or three, and that my recent “luck” of getting into Tokyo AND London wasn’t luck but rather someone somewhere pulling strings. Yeah not so much. Turns out they’re running a contest for those of us who’ve run 5 majors (not me, I’ve run 4). If that’s you, you can enter to win a free entry to the remaining race you need to get all 6. In all they’re giving away 6 free entries to each of the 6 WMM races. I runfess I let my imagination run away and really over-thought this one.
I’ll leave you with this handsome young buck who was standing path side, cheering me on in the final 5k of my 12 miler. I did not zoom in, he was really that close and he did not budge. I mostly did not look at him as I went on my way but wow! So fearless.
Thinking of all Veterans today! How was your week? Did you get snow? Did you see Bohemian Rhapsody?

The weather swing was quite surprising! When I woke up on Saturday and saw real feel in the single digits I did a triple take… and then hit the snooze button in protest haha. I was stoked to see the Abbott announcement and hope that I get in for London

Love that buck! I might have been afraid to be that close. You sound disappointed that you don’t have another major to chase after. 😉 I am not ready for this winter weather. I think our fall was drowned out with rain. I hope the Numbus keep serving you well.

The hubby and I saw Bohemian Rhapsody last weekend, and were blown away by it. Like you, I didn’t know much of Queen’s story, but I did love their music. Yes, the snow and sub-freezing temps are way too early….Momma N needs her meds adjusted.

I’m really skeptical about a chiro working magic with my hip as I think it’s age-related arthritis/bursitis or some other evil thing that strikes as we age. BUT, I’m willing to give anything a try. That’s a fine buck. But, do they ever attack? Yikes. Thanks for linking..

We had a good weather swing today. I’ve done a lot at home, and I did manage to get out too. I usually see my chiro once every two weeks to stay in alignment, and get any kinks that may pop up.

Today was certainly more tolerable for a long run than yesterday. But it was still chilly and windy. I’m so glad to hear that Dr Miracle’s assistant was able to get the hip to behave. What up with the majors? Geez, what a tease!
Deborah Brooks says
we had a blast of cold air this week too but nothing like what you all have. It’s still refreshing and energizing although it did have me scrambling to find my winter gear. I would say the fact that you are already up to 12 mile runs is pretty fantastic

I remember after I ran the NYC marathon last year, Marathon Tours was saying the next one they’ll add to the majors will be Singapore. I spent about 6 weeks in Singapore for work and was surprised that was the choice- I thought they’d add one in Africa or something for those of us trying to do all the continents.
But alas…it wasn’t an addition at all. Well, good for those who are trying to finish their 6th! I bet they do add another at some point soon.

That waterside winter shot is gorgeous — but yeah, way too soon and we didn’t get as bad as you did (yet).
Gorgeous deer
I’m rereading Potter — Nimbus – so you’re running in brooms? 😉
No Bohemian Rhapsody — debating breaking my movie hiatus for the new Potter/Fantastic Beasts. Was supposed to be for Jurassic Park but that didn’t happen
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
There are so many deer out when i run in the morning and sometimes they just stand there and watch me run. It’s crazy! So glad your hip is doing well. Sometimes those chiro appointments just seem to work magic!

Bohemian Rhapsody is on my list.
It is cold here. I HATE it!!!!!!!!!!!
Snow flurries but that’s it but WIND!!!!!!!!!!!
can’t wait for summer. ha ha.
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
We haven’t gotten snow yet in Philly…I don’t think I could handle it! So exciting that your Tokyo training has begun!! Your chiropractor sounds awesome…I tried doing chiro years ago and I had a complete quack that has kept me away from the process….
Haven’t seen Bohemian Rhapsody but it seems to be a huge hit!
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
Amazing that the deer stayed so close! I’ve only seen a few where I’m at but they usually run away before I get anywhere close enough to take a picture.
That’s so cool that they are offering contest for the people who have run the majors! What an amazing thing to win!!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I am so not ready for the weather to turn so quickly! We didn’t have a long enough fall.
Amazing that the buck let you get so close – great pic!
Amy @ She Runs By Faith says
Oy… here is winter and it’s here to stay for a good while! I’m crying a little. It’s SO cool that you have 4 world majors under your belt! I have a whopping ONE – Boston. And I’m not sure I’ll ever hit any others. The American ones may be realistic for me some day but the big travels intimidate me. Maybe that will be better when kids grow up?
I look forward to following your Tokyo training journey! Even just your race pics themselves are going to be AMAZING!!! Can’t wait to see them and read the recap 🙂
Shathiso says
Yay!!!! To running Tokyo! I am so excited for you! Good luck with all the training especially that lots of it will be done in winter!
