Before I get started on the Road to Tokyo Marathon, special thanks to Wendy and Holly for inviting me to guest host the Weekly Wrap! Congrats to everyone who ran the New York City Marathon and the Indy Monumental Marathon. You’re all rockstars!
Road to the Tokyo Marathon
Here we are: The first full week of a new month and it’s time already to get on the road. Tokyo Marathon training officially starts this week. That sure came up fast, didn’t it? Before I get into that here’s how last week went:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Ran 3 miles
Wednesday: Sports Chiro
Thursday: Yoga
Friday: Ran 5 miles
Saturday: Ran 3 miles
Sunday: CrossFit
It was a cut-way-back kind of week. Because I really didn’t know the extent of my hip issue until I saw Dr. Miracle, I didn’t wanna press my luck and over-do right before Tokyo Marathon training officially starts. So I didn’t.
I was a little worried when Dr. Miracle sent me for an x-ray. I don’t consider myself a stress fracture kind of girl and my running volume lately has been super low. The good news is my x-ray came back normal and “very clean” meaning no arthritis or other issues to worry about. Even better news: He cracked me something fierce and while I was sore from it the next day, during Friday’s test run I felt like a new woman. NO HIP ISSUES! Needless to say, there’ll be regular Chiropractor visits throughout marathon training this time around rather than waiting until I’m injured like I usually do.
So here’s my Tokyo training plan going forward. In a perfect world I’d have a 13 mile long run base to start with but I don’t and that’s ok. I can build from where I am.
Since I tend to thrive on low mileage and lots of crosstraining I’m planning on a 3-4-3-4 run schedule, meaning I’ll do 3 runs one week followed by 4 the next, with more intensity on the 3-run weeks.
I’ll also keep 2 days of strength training in there but as Coach Lucifer says “we’re no longer going for muscle hypertrophy. Too much risk of injury in that.” Who knew Coaches from hell had a soft side?
Highlights
We enjoyed some peak fall weather and colors. I wish I could bottle the cool, crisp air and fragrance of the forest.
Caveman and I got out for a dinner/movie “date”. We had Mexican food at Mago Grill and Cantina and saw First Man, which IMHO was good but not great. It was a interesting (sad) biopic of Neil Armstrong but the story could have moved along faster.
With our 20th wedding anniversary coming up in 10 days, the Caveman surprised me and the teenager with first class air to Tokyo. Seriously how nice will it be to be able to lie down and sleep on that 15 hour flight? Now WTH do I get the man who wants nothing/buys everything for himself?
We attended a wake for the teenagers best friend’s dad. 6 weeks ago he went in and was treated for gallbladder-related pain. 2 weeks ago a cancer diagnosis was made. He died at age 61. There’s that sad reminder again. Go live your best, fullest life NOW.
The week ahead
Election Day. And it can’t come soon enough. I’m beyond sick of the political vitriol/campaign ads/calls/texts. And yes, I already voted.
First middle school band concert of the school year. Thing 2’s passion for music and her flute/piccolo has really blossomed this year. I hope she sticks with it.
How was your week? Are you “officially” training for something? See any movies?
Wendy says
Muscle hypertrophy is overrated…
That’s so sad about that dad. We’re seeing a lot more of these biliary tract cancers and I really wonder why. I lost 2 friends to it last fall.

I’m officially pre-training for our official training for our ultra in July – had a catch-up with my friend I’m running it with and a PLAN has sort of formed. Good luck moving towards Tokyo – so exciting! And sorry to hear about your friend, very sad news and no age at all.

Thanks for co-hosting the Weekly Wrap this week!
So excited to follow you on your journey to Tokyo and that’s such great news that the X-rays came back all clear. I know that must have been a huge relief! Also how cool that you’ll enjoy first class airfare for Tokyo – that’s amazing!!
I’m so sorry to hear about the passing of that dad – so, so incredibly sad, but like you said, a reminder to live life to the fullest.
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Yay!! So glad the Xray came back clean! I like that 3-4-3-4 style, it’s similar to what I did for ultra training in that I alternated a build and cutback week each week. Tokyo is such a great race I’m excited for you!
Jessie says
Oh my gosh, that first class airfare will be such a lovely treat before the marathon! Enjoy!
Coco says
So sorry about your daughter’s friend’s Dad. Also a good reminder to take care of yourself and not ignore things.
First class air fare is a great gift! You will enjoy being pampered and putting your feet up!
My husband picked out a bike for himself for his birthday. It’s just better that way.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
So glad you dont have a stress fracture and that your adjustment helped so much! That first class flight is an awesome gift!
Kimberly Hatting says
Just got home from seeing Bohemian Rhapsody…I think the Freddy guy might have the Oscar (maybe by a half-vote above Bradley LOL). I seldom go to movies, and in the past two weeks, I have seen two sensational works of cinematic art. Congrats on scoring those first class tix 😉
fairytales and fitness says
I do believe flying first class to Tokyo is the only way to take that 15 hour flight! What a great gift. Is your husband not going to Tokyo with you and the teenager?
Beth E. says
Very glad your X-ray was clean!! Isn’t it insulting when the first thing they check for is arthritis? I’ve given more than one X-ray technician the stink eye for that! 😉
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
I’m so excited for you for your Tokyo Marathon training to begin! Hopefully, Dr. Miracle will keep you healthy during your training cycle. I have one of those doctors, too!
Thanks for helping host the linkup!
angela @ happy fit mama says
It’s so sad about the father. I’ve heard way too many stories like that lately. What’s going on?!?! Glad to hear the hip is looking (and feeling good!). Let’s keep that feeling going all the way to Tokyo!
Sarah @ Bucket List Tummy says
First class to Tokyo? That sounds amazing and a trip of a lifetime! I thrive on chriopractor visits too – I need to get back there.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Such great news that you x-ray was clean!
Flying to Tokyo first class will be a wonderful treat and will take 15 hr flight so much more enjoyable! Wishing you a wonderful training cycle – looking forward to cheering you on 🙂
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I was horrible at my flute in grade school, but got a much better teacher in junior high & was pretty good, all the way through college. Haven’t touched it in years, of course.
That’s great that there’s nothing going on & your Dr.Miracle fixed you up! And first class to Japan for both of you is sweet (and $$$$$$).
We saw First Man. Mr. Judy is a space nerd. And I usually enjoy that sort of movie, too, even though I’m not. And I told him it made going to the Moon as exciting as watching paint dry. 🙁
Melissa says
YAY TOKYO! So exciting! Sounds like you’re off to a good start with training. I am not officially training for anything right now and I’m totally okay with that — my sleep is so off lately with our baby and being back at work, that it’s nice not to HAVE to run and instead just get out and enjoy running. Too often when I train for something, if I miss a run I get down on myself so it’s nice to not put myself under that pressure right now.
Jenn says
So super exciting for you! And I’m so glad you’re not having hip pain!
I can’t wait to vote on Tuesday. I waited to vote so I could bring little man to the polls with me. I think it’s a good learning experience for him.
At home, we watched Skyscraper and Equals. Both were decent. In the theaters, I am holding out for Robin Hood and Fantastic Beasts. Mr PR wants to see Bohemian Rhapsody. I heard First Man was good but I will probably wait for it to come out on my movie chennel.
Lesley says
If the Caveman buys everything, what about an excursion or tour in Tokyo, his pick? Laying down to sleep on a plane would be so nice!
Hannah says
Glad the X-rays are all clear. Lying down to sleep on a plane sounds amazing!
Deborah Brooks says
So glad to hear that your hip is nothing serious. Really excited for you and your fun races ahead. Are you still doing Philly? Would love to see you
Darlene says
So happy for NO stress fracture.
2 Worlds in one year. Now that is exciting. Can’t wait to follow your journey.
Never flown first class. That will be sweet!
My hubby wanted to see First Man. Glad I said “No.”
Go see A Star is Born…now that’s great film.
I played violin and continued until HS when I discovered boys. LOL
Denise @ runheartfit says
Sorry about your daughter’s friends Dad. You just never know what could happen.
Good luck on Tokyo training. So cool you get to go first class especially for such a long flight.
Love your Fall pics!
chaitali says
First class flights to Tokyo sound amazing! That’s a perfect gift. And it sounds like you’ve got a great plan heading into training 🙂
Allie says
Oh heck yeah! First class is the only way to go on that flight!! That is the best gift ever – besides running Tokyo in the first place of course 🙂 I will also be SO HAPPY when tomorrow is over…well, “happy” its over but have to obviously wait on the outcome.
And I couldn’t agree more with getting out and living your life on your terms now because you never know how long you have!! LIVE IT UP!!!
Laura says
That’s such great news about your hip! I agree, regular chiro visits go such a long way… but I rarely make time for them until I’m injured. I love your plan for this training cycle!
Montana @ Pretty Lil Mudder says
Tokyo will be so cool and how awesome to have First Class flights! That’s a really long flight so the extra comfort will definitely be worth it.
