Despite once again simmering in heat and humidity here in Chicago, I’m happy to say I had another solid workout week. That makes two weeks in a row, but who’s counting? Here’s how it went down.
Monday: Rest
My track time will be over as soon as school is back in session so I’m making the most of it.
Tuesday: Track Ladder
Wednesday: Yoga, strength
Thursday: Trail Run 4 miles
Friday: Bike 20 miles, swim 1 mile
Saturday: Brutally hot trail run 10 miles. This went better than it had a right to. Already 83 degrees when I started, climbed up to 95 before I finished. I think the Bowl I had at Chipotle with rice and beans the night before had magical powers. Sure the run was hard and hot, but it didn’t stop me in my tracks the way you’d expect it to. Far from it.
Sunday: Crossfit
My questionable attempt at a Teresa-style running pic!
It is crazy and wonderful how much better I am feeling since my new thyroid meds kicked in. Running (even in high heat) is feeling better, I’m fitting into jeans that haven’t fit in almost a year, all is right with the world.
You may know what happens when running goes well. You sign up for races. Big ones. At least I do.
I threw my name in the hat for the Tokyo Marathon, which, to be honest, I would’ve done even if I felt like death. I’m struggling with staying hopeful about this one as I’ve got about an ice cube’s chance in hell of getting in.
I also decided to jump in for Philly this fall. Jill, Tara and I are long overdue for a racecation so Philly it will be!
Also coming up soon:
- 9/15: Zooma Great Lakes Half. Join me before the $$ increase! MARCIA2018 saves you 10%
- 9/22: Lululemon Seawheeze Half. Thing 1 will be joining me on this trip. I just bought tix to the sunset yoga festival. It’ll be so much fun.
In other news:
It’s been a single-child week since last Wednesday. While I can’t help but worry about Thing 1 at Lollapalooza (at the time of writing she’s in the midst of the 4th and final day) she’s been safe and having a wonderful time. They’ll be back on the first train out of the city on Monday morning to make it to Senior Orientation. I can’t help but smile at the March of the Zombies that’ll be. Haha!
We’ve used our time sans Thing 1 to focus on Thing 2 and do things she enjoys: Biking, waterpark, and a trip to Stan’s Donuts. I’d been wanting to see what all the hype was about. To me they were good, but nothing out of this world. Maybe we didn’t get the best flavors. Maybe my sweet tooth isn’t what it once was (praise be to God) I don’t know.
If you pay attention, you’ll see it in the Blue’s Brothers movie.
Growing up we lived a short walk from Amy Joy Donuts. It’s been closed for years now but their donuts will always be my fave.
The garden loves the heat. It’s gone wild with cukes and tomatoes this week. I made this Cucumber Salad recipe with Stevia subbed in for sugar and remembered how much I love it.
How was your week? Pull the trigger on any races lately? Favorite donuts?
I’m linking up with Deb for her Race Linkup, and with Holly and Wendy for the Weekly Wrap.

Ooh Tokyo! I’ve never run it, but I used to live in Japan and of the world majors, it’s the only one besides NYC that really tempts me, although I did throw my hat in for London.
That cucumber salad looks delicious! Do you ever make Israeli sald? https://toriavey.com/toris-kitchen/israeli-salad-week/ is one I tend to use, save for the specific cucumber. Perfectly refreshing.
Glad the meds are helping you, such an amazing feeling
Coco says
Way to go on that steamy long run. That was HOT. So glad your new meds still seem to be the right ones! I think Deborah may have put a bug in my ear about the Philly Half in November — is the marathon the same weekend?
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
That’s so great that you’ve been feeling better! Sounds like the meds are helping. And yay for races! I love the Philly Marathon. Such a fun fall race weekend!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Great job on your long run! So good to hear your new thyroid meds are doing their job. Running in Tokyo would be amazing – when you hear about the lottery results?
Kimberly Hatting says
I’m so so so close to pulling the trigger on R’n’R Philly, logistics be damned :-0 The sis bailed on me, but now the hubs indicated he might be in. Your Philly race seems a lot less stressful LOL
Deborah Brooks says
I am planning on doing the Philly half as well if I can get my achilles pain figured out. Will be fun to see you again! LOL on the magical chipotle bowl powers 🙂
Wendy says
Oh, that track ladder! If I ever get some speed back, I’m going to attempt that. You know I love numbers and that appeals to the geek in me.
I loved Stan’s Donuts, but they are #2 for me. The Riverside Bakery in McHenry has THE BEST cake donuts. Still.
I texted Tom this morning–he’s on his way to work. I can’t imagine how tired he must be after 4 days of Lolla.

I’m so glad that you are feeling so much better on the new medication – such a blessing! Congrats on the awesome week of workouts, especially your long run in the heat this weekend.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you for Tokyo and I know you will enjoy the Philadelphia Marathon – I’ve heard nothing but awesome things about that race!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
Ooh I hope you get into Tokyo! Since you’re running Philly, I hope it’ll be an opportunity for us to finally meet! I’m still not sure if I’ll be doing any races that weekend but maybe we could have a mini blogger meetup??
I’m so glad to hear that your workouts are going so well these days!! And speaking of gardening, our tomatoes are out of control! Bret’s composting lead to us having a large group of unintended tomatoes and they have been thriving (aka taking over the garden)!
Laura says
That is a strong ladder workout! Tokyo would be awesome. And I’m considering doing Philly this year too! If my legs cooperate and seem up for a marathon that’s one of my top choices. We’ll see!

Two weeks in a row – Woot Woot
I was hoping you’d do Montreal.
Philly is a great city though.
Donuts has me thinking back to Panama City.
Looking for a Florida race – haven’t registered yet. Need to coordinate dates with friends & relatives there.
Is this the most humid summer ever or am I getting old (older)?
Cari says
I think this is definitely a more humid than normal summer, Darlene. Also didn’t help that winter lingered so far into “spring”.
When are you looking for Florida? I’m repeating the A1A Half in February, which I liked but didn’t love. I wanted to do the Fort Lauderdale half in November but it didn’t work schedule wise, nor did the Miami Halloween one.
The Accidental Marathoner says
Glad your thyroid is in better control. Way to dig deep on that 10 mile run! Fingers crossed we both get in to Tokyo!
Lesley says
No new races here, though I am in week 2 of training for my next 10k. Since my mom and I booked with a TA, we don’t have to battle it out for Princess registration tomorrow.
HoHo Runs says
Fingers and toes crossed for Toyko! That would be really cool. Nice job on the Teresa-style pic! You’re ponytail has great form! I grew up summering at the beach and eating Thomas’s Donuts. They are still my favorite. Sour Cream is the best. Or devil’s food. Or red velvet… Thanks for linking!
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
I absolutely LOVED the Tokyo Marathon! I hope you get in!
AmyC says
Oh I love a big ‘ol glazed donut, but that usually leads to me wanting more and more. haha! I used to think my PB&J sandwiches at lunch had magical powers. I always had a good run after school when I packed them (in a pinch) 😉 My running partner and colleague thought I was crazy!
Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says
Good luck getting in to Tokyo! I’ve been debating on one of the Philly races.
I made cucumber and tomato salad last week but I couldn’t get it to taste the way my mom makes it..haha. It seems so simple but I think you need to get the measurements of the mixture just right.
Liz Dexter says
I love your photos, how on earth do you get those? With a timer, or a friend lying down?
How exciting to try tor Tokyo, I bet it’s amazing, given how into running Japan is as a culture.
The happier I am running, the fewer races I sign up for, but I’m odd. I just need my running for me. My only race booked for this year is on Saturday!
Denise @ runheartfit says
Maybe I need to get some Chipotle. My runs have been rough lately and now my left achilles is swollen and sore…ugh. ‘
That track workout looks tough. Do you rest between each set? I’m new to track workouts, and never quite sure what to do.
Good luck on Tokyo!
Thelma says
YAY Philly. Did you register already? What do you think of that 8k / marathon challenge? I want to register this weekend!
I’m so glad running’s going well for you finally – you DESERVE to run well after all this turmoil! I’ll succumb to running slow forever…..I did a 20k trail race on Sunday last week and was elated I finished close to last. Elated, because I finished and felt decent. Close to last (10 finished after me….but it was a smaller Xterra race too with super fast peeps 🙂 ) was painful at first but I thought about how good-ish I felt and I was truly happy with just that! Goals shift as we age, I guess.
xo

Awww, your ‘Teresa’ style runfie looks fabulous! You have your full stride, badass running pics and Holly has her mailbox greetings ..I guess this means I now have my own signature style of running selfies! I’m so happy! Thanks for the shout-out 🙂
I absolutely love fresh cucumber and tomato salad …and from your own garden is even tastier.
I’m thrilled to hear that your new thyroid medicine is kicking those running blahs to the curb! Good luck with the Tokyo lottery …that should be an incredible experience! Do you speak any Japanese?
Jessie says
I ran Tokyo in 2015! I have tons of posts about it on my blog, it was (and still is) one of my most favorite marathon experiences.
