Just like that, summer break 2018 has come to an end.
That also means my use of the middle school track is over for the year. Sigh. Here’s how my workouts went this week:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Track was already full so 4 miles of neighborhood intervals
Wednesday: Strength + Field Lake Delavan Trip
Thursday: Run 6 miles
Friday: Bike 15 miles + Swim
Saturday: Trail Run 10 miles + Swim
Sunday: CrossFit + Swim
Because school starts bright and early Monday morning for my high school senior and on Wednesday for my 7th grader, this week was all about getting them all set and ready to go. School supplies, clothes, schedule, schedule conflicts, all of that was on tap. Traffic is already building and the school buses were out making practice route runs. Even though technically there’s a good month of summer left, for all intents and purposes, it’s done and dusted for us.
Who wouldn’t like to finish a race with a little recovery plunge in the lake?
I made a trip up to Lake Delavan, Wisconsin to check out the Zooma Great Lakes race course. I was pleased to see it was a rolling loop around the beautiful lake, through sleepy, treelined residential areas, with the start and finish on the waterfront at the Lake Lawn Lodge. You can still beat the price increase (but spots are filling fast) and save an extra 10% with MARCIA2018.
My workouts were solid, but pretty much an afterthought with everything else going on. It continues to be hot but not as hot as last week. One of these days my long run needs to reach beyond 10 miles. I’ve yet to get my head around this marathon training thing I committed to.
About that Giveaway
I had an opportunity to try Munk Pack Protein Cookies and Oatmeal Fruit Squeeze packs.
If you like oatmeal pre-race, especially if you’re traveling, the 110 calorie Oatmeal Fruit Squeeze packs are super convenient. They’re whole grain, vegan and gluten free. I found the combo of fruit bits and grains to be very tasty as well as satisfying. They’d also be an amazing hiking/camping/kayaking snack, not to mention great for kids to take to school.
The protein cookies are large and contain 18g of plant-based protein. At 360 calories each, they’re a substantial snack all on their own. I found myself breaking off a piece here and there throughout the day. The flavors are all very good and include clean, all-natural ingredients. I love that they’re gluten-, soy- and dairy free.
Find Munk Pack Oatmeal Fruit Squeezes locally at Mariano’s and Jewel. Their Protein Cookies are available at Target and Jewel.
WIN IT!
One lucky winner will receive an assortment of Munk Pack products.

How was your week? Are kids back to school yet? How far is your long run right now?
Deborah Brooks says
The last few weeks of summer sure did fly by! My kids are off to college this week sigh. I have not tried those snacks-how is the sugar content?
Jessie says
I love the sound of those cookies and the oatmeal freezer packs! How convenient. I hope I win 🙂
You still fit a lot of fitness into a busy week- so impressive!
Wendy says
I just think it’s too soon to go back to school. Matthew doesn’t start until after Labor Day. It’s a law in Wisconsin to keep more labor available for all the tourism areas.
Sounds like the Zooma course will be beautiful! I’m looking forward to it now that running seems to be going well.
Kim G says
Wow, I can’t believe that your kids will be back in school this upcoming week. The kids here don’t go back until after Labor Day.
You had a solid week of workouts and it’s awesome that you were able to preview the Zooma course!
angela @ happy fit mama says
School already?!?! My kids go back in 2 weeks but they also don’t finish until mid/late June. I’m glad we have some time to cram in more beach and summer fun.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I cant believe summer is coming to an end already! I’m sure it will still be hot for awhile longer though. These snacks look really good!
Coco says
We have a few more weeks until school starts around here – I’m not ready for that traffic yet.
That oatmeal/fruit snack sounds intriguing – would love to win some to try!
Kimberly Hatting says
I don’t even know when school resumes here….since we’re done with school (and headed off to college in a couple weeks), I’m really out of the local loop. We did drop a huge amount of cash this afternoon…college dorm room stuff. Yowza. It’s my third time doing this college gig and I seem to have forgotten the haul of stuff the kids need LOL
Amie says
I can’t believe it’s back to school! My healthy snack on the go has been Skratch Labs bars the days.
Steph says
I’m old school…I carry a banana to work every day 🙂
Teresa says
Ahhh, yes. School is back in session down here too. The youngest started on Friday and the college boy went back to college on Friday as well.
Long run? What’s that? Lol. My long run is only up to 6 miles but dang, when done on single tracks, it sure felt like a 10 miler!
I do love some oatmeal …I’m heading over to enter right now! 🙂
The Accidental Marathoner says
I just arrived in Indiana to teach a class and I won’t be home until Wednesday evening. My youngest son was in Des Moines all weekend and is leaving for his senior year at IU early on Wednesday. In other words, my summer with him was cut a week shorter than it should have been! UGH. You know what’s going to happen-we are going to go from this God-awful heat and humidity straight to winter.
Cari says
Ooh those oatmeal fruit squeezes look good. I was just saying I was jealous of my nephews’ “pouches” as they’d make great run snacks. I have a few gels that are “OK” but none work pre run for me, so maybe. Oddly I was just in Target
Although I don’t have kidlets I love school holidays because trains are infinitely less crowded. I don’t travel at peak tourist time even though my stop is somewhat of a tourist peg and the gym is definitely (Times Square). Good luck with back to school & routines. Shame track is off limits for the entirety of the year

That course sounds great, how lovely! I like the look of the Munk Pack, however they’re horribly expensive here in the UK. I do eat a lot of oats anyway but will look out for UK versions of this idea as they seem like they would be palatable.
Not sure when your mara is, I like to build up early to allow for illness and injury time. I did a 19 mile race on Sat and am going to try to keep some long ones in every few weeks so I can tackle my next DIY mara in October.
Renata says
I love snacking on nut butter with apple or banana slices for a healthy protein snack.
lindsey @ livinglovingrunner says
I live in a university city and the traffic yesterday was CRAZY! I am not looking forward to the additional thousands of students (and their sub-par driving skills) to be back… I am always snacking and healthy options aren’t always easy.
AmyC says
The course sounds lovely! Schools here in Hong Kong are starting back this week, but just like in the US, they all start and end at different times.
Darlene says
I remember those week before school days. Glad that’s over.
Not a good running week. Work heat humidity and rain.
Hoping this week is better but there is rain in the forecast.
That race course looks awesome.
Raymond S says
I like to snack on trail mix with nuts and dried fruits.

A swim to cap off a great run is my idea of a perfect workout! I like to snack on seaweed crisps or trail mix.
MaryEllen says
Never heard of Munk Pack! I’d love to try it out! My favorite go-to snack is oven roasted chickpeas!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I don’t know why but it seems like school is starting super early this year! Usually the kids getting rolling in Philly is September but I think they’re starting a week early.
This giveaway looks great! Trader Joe’s trail mix has been my snacking go-to at the office, I’m always looking for new things to try!
Amy @ Life to the Full says
Granola bars are my favorite healthy snack and these look tasty too! Let’s not talk about summer ending… though I do LOVE Fall, I’m not ready to begin the 6 months of Winter again :'(
HoHo Runs says
I’m preparing my last son for college move-in this week. Sigh. Great job on the double digits. I haven’t run long since RnR Chicago. My go to snack is a Zone Bar but I am a huge fan of oatmeal. That is definitely a hearty cookie, calorie wise. Thanks for linking!
Hannah says
I usually take granola bars with me – the protein cookies sound like a nice change of pace!
Annamarie V says
I’m trying to snack less but when I do I have a piece of cheese or half an avocado.
