I’m not one to wish away time and certainly not summer time but I have news for you. Half the year is over. Done Finished. Finito. In the rear view mirror. Remember all those goals and dreams and action plans we formulated back when 2018 was shiny and new? Yeah those. It’s time for a progress checkup.
Running: C
While I stick to my 3 weekly runs religiously, my long run continues to be MIA. Blame it on injury, weather, lack of motivation or just not feeling great, my endurance continues to come up short. This would be sort of okay since I no longer have the desire to chase PRs, however with some half marathons coming up, I really do need a run longer than 6 or 8 miles. Although I’m starting to add back a tiny bit of speedwork, the bulk of my runs have been on trails or easy paced, many with walk breaks.
Crosstraining A
I’d give myself an A+ here if it weren’t for the fact that I’ve been mostly slacking on yoga. Sure there was that ONE yoga class I hit up last week and there’ve been yoga videos in the pain cave, but still. On a positive note, strength, corework, cycling, swimming and CrossFit are going really well.
Weightloss A
While my 7 pound weightloss probably doesn’t merit an A, a 7 pound weightloss while my thyroid is completely dysfunctional is, in the words of my Endocrinologist, “pretty amazing”. Fingers crossed the new thyroid meds that are due to show up here this week, are effective.
Clean Up Diet: A+++
To be honest, I’ve never EVER eaten as clean as I have been lately. I ate well the first three months of the year but April, May and June have been stellar. Whole, unprocessed foods, lots of veggies and greens, minimal added sugars, and no crap. I don’t even keep any cookies or chips in the house for the kids anymore, and the fact that I got zero protest from them blew my mind. Even though I haven’t lost as much weight as I would like, so much good has come from eating well:
- No bloating, heartburn or indigestion
- No more hot flashes
- No more sugar cravings. Heck even ketchup and spaghetti sauce taste really sweet now
- Clearer complexion, brighter skin tone
- Less brain fog
- Better focus
This is a lifestyle change I’d hoped to make for a long time but could never make it last. While I won’t hesitate to enjoy a treat once in awhile, it is no longer a daily habit and the mindless afternoon snacking is over too.
Fun: A
Despite lackluster running, I’ve had my share of fun this year. I enjoyed a girls’ racecation back in January when we all ran the Gasparilla Amber Challenge. I also enjoyed a lovely family spring break trip in California and let’s not forget about La Crosse. We’re headed South later this week for a bunch of college visits starting in Georgia and ending in Florida. RocknRoll Chicago is shaping up to be nothing short of wonderful and Lululemon Sea Wheeze and Zooma Great Lakes (join me and save with MARCIA2018) in September are going to be fun as well. Another racecation is in the works for later in the year as well. Stay tuned for that.
Overall, if I could take my thyroid woes out of the equation, Id have nothing to whine about. I’m having a pretty kick-arse year. In the meantime, I’ll keep trying to find a way to feel better; more energetic and less sluggish.
Are you on track with your goals this year? Any fun plans coming up?
Be sure to join me right here later this week for the Runfession Friday Linkup! I promise you’ll feel better!

I hope your new meds do the trick and things start improving with your thyroid. RnR Chi is gonna rock, literally 😉 Huge congrats on the weight loss and the diet clean-up. That’s major!!!!

Glad that things are going well for you. Looking forward to seeing you at ZOOMA!

Way to go! June looks pretty good for you. I am also trying to clean up my nutrition…crossing my fingers that I can write about some weight loss (or at least inches lost) at the end of next month!

It sounds like overall you are doing great this year! The clean eating is a huge accomplishment. And hopefully once the thyroid stuff gets figured out then running will start to feel better.

looks like you are having a great year! my original goal was 2018 miles this year, but I’m way behind. I decided that’s ok, my main priority is health and I’ve added cross training and am getting more consistent

Let’s just say this year has thrown a few curve balls at us, and fun has been missing a LOT. But that’s changing.
7 lbs is awesome — even with a functioning thyroid. That’s a pants size. I would give my eye teeth to lose that much in one month — never gonna happen — never has, never will. I eat pretty clean but not completely. All you have to do is glance at my IG feed from this weekend. 🙂
Control the things you can, and let go of the rest, right? Good luck on the meds search!

What a roller coaster this year has been for both of us–I’m going to blame menopause for the loss of endurance. It’s so frustrating. I guess the run/walk intervals are here to stay. Time to focus on fun because yep, those PRs are out the window.

It’s been an interesting year, to say the least. I’ve had fun, I’ve had frustrations. I hope the fun picks up and I have more of that than frustrations. My fingers are crossed for you new meds.

I need to check up on my diet…all the time. I seem to always have bloating issues (hello looking prego at the end of the day). I know WHAT I should be cleaning up…it is just taking more action! Maybe I will see you in Chicago next month 😉

Overall looks like you’ve had a great year so far!

Wow! I’m impressed with your commitment to your diet and that you got no flak from the kid set! I need to do that, too. I’ve been indulging a little bit more than I probably should – but doing pretty well overall – but I know I could do better. We could all always do better, right? lol
I’ve got my fingers crossed so hard for you with regard to those meds!
I think adding the speed work in will definitely help with the 1/2 training. You may not be running long but you’ll build strength and endurance doing those workouts. I think you’ll probably end up fine at your halfs so long as you don’t go crazy. I don’t think you’re the going crazy type anyway!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
wow looks like you have made some really great progress on your goals! Eating well makes me feel so much better as well. My long runs are non existent right now due to the heat.

Whoop! Whoop! What a great year – well done, all your hard work is paying off! Yes, those Half Marathons you’ve lined up will give you more reason to squeeze in a few long runs. But what a brilliant report all round.

You rock, Lou!
I gave up on the weight loss; I feel yucky all the time no matter what I do/don’t do.
I mailed you a package today – I hope it arrives before you leave down South. If not, I hope you have friends picking up your mail :).
Tara and I are thinking the GOATz trail race in Nebraska Oct. 21. Change things up a bit! Whaddya think?
