It was an up and down sort of week. Some workouts were very good while others were all kinds of horrible.
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Strength + 15 miles bike
Wednesday: Aborted track workout/trails 4 miles total
Thursday: Rest
Friday: Treadmill 4 miles with pickups (went very well)
Saturday: CrossFit+ Swim (I’ve gotten stronger)
Sunday: wanted 8 but ran 6 miles before putting an end to the shit show
I was so proud of myself for getting up and out to the track by 5:45am only to find it already monopolized by a track team complete with coaches. What the what?? Don’t they know the 5-7am time slots is ALL MINE in summer? Talk about a buzzkill.
The weather was part gorgeous and part horrific as well. While the weekend was beautiful, torrential rains and cool temperatures took their toll in the days prior. Does gloom wear on you the way it does me? The teenager (bless her heart) volunteered as a counselor at a camp for handicapped kids this week, but that meant no one was around to “encourage” me to get to a yoga class, even though I told you how much I enjoyed it last week.
Thankfully the rain dried up and the sun returned just in time for our town’s annual Strawberry Fest, which is one of the highlights of the year for our sleepy little village. I was able to check “Outdoor Concert” off my summer bucket list. The band there plaid “oldies” from Journey, REO Speedwagon, Bon Jovi and Foreigner. As a kid I well remember “oldies” bands playing stuff from the 50s. Now? Yeah the oldies are aimed right at my age group. How’d that happen?
Strawberry Fest also figures into the story of how I became a mom. You could say it’s where it all began…sort of…17 years ago I was 38 weeks pregnant with the now teenager. Having just moved to our little village earlier that year, the Caveman and I decided to check out the Strawberry Fest. It was quite warm and sunny and there was lots of walking….and eating all the strawberry things. That evening labor commenced. Even though she took her sweet time and didn’t actually arrive until 48+ hours later, the teenager will always be known as our “strawberry girl”.
This week
We’re in full-on birthday mode. The teenager and her friends attended Summer Bash Saturday night. Tonight family and friends are convening at Top Golf and Monday night (her actual birthday) we’ll be celebrating with her grandparents. I feel like the hourglass has been flipped over and the grains of sand that signify this final year before she turns 18 and heads off to college, are steadily and quickly slipping away. Sigh.
How was your week? Did you race? If you’re a mom, how did labor commence for you?
Just a heads up: We’re at the halfway point of 2018. Are you where you hoped you’d be with any goals you set? Our Tuesdays on the Run Linkup is all about grading your month/year…or sharing a progress report. Join us!
The Runfession Friday Linkup opens this Friday! Trust me you do not want to miss it so mark your calendar right now!

I can’t believe that team was already on the track so early in the morning, especially in the summer! Dreary weather definitely takes a toll on me. Those strawberries look so good! I think it looks like you had a solid week, despite the rain and cooler temps.

Yes, strawberries do make everything better!! You asked, so I’ll share…our first daughter was due on July 8th. Being a tall gal, I didn’t look as pregnant as I really was, so everyone convinced me I’d go well past my due date (including my doctor). I woke up in the early morning (1:30 a.m.) on July 5th, and felt like I’d wet the bed. I’d been getting up in the middle of the night for the past couple of months to use the bathroom, so I didn’t think it was anything else. Then about 4:00, I had some cramps….and an hour later I was major pain. We got to the hospital around 5:45, and at 7:01 the daughter was here and I was in complete shock and disbelief at what had just happened LOL She’s gonna be 24 in a couple of weeks…YIKES!!!!! It goes way too fast.

Wow that track team was out there super early! This kids have some dedication to get up so early on their summer break. Hopefully they won’t be there every morning so that you can have the track to yourself!
Such a sweet story about the strawberry festival 🙂

Those strawberries look amazing! For my first, I spent the day celebrating MY birthday with a brunch with friends, and when I was relaxing that evening my water broke. I joke that I ate so much there was no more room. 😉

I love strawberries but unfortunately my hubby loves them more and they don’t last in my house.
I was tempted to go strawberry picking today but was afraid that I would get rained on.

I LOVE strawberries! When we lived out in Monterey, CA (where my husband is now), we used to go to the strawberry festival up in Watsonville. Although, yours sounds way more fun. That one was cramped and crowded but the strawberries were delicious!
Both of my girls were preemies (Thing 1 was 8 weeks early and Thing 2 was 5 1/2 weeks early) so going into labor was a pretty interesting experience for me both times. One was middle of the night (seriously, why does she keep waking me up in the middle of the night?!?!) and the other was in the middle of the day WHILE I was at an appointment. LOL At least she was more courteous. haha

Strawberries do make everything better. So do peaches! I’m getting my peach cobbler ready to bake as we speak.
I hope we BOTH have good long runs this week. Fat chance of that, tho, since it’s going to be 1000 degrees again… what a crazy summer.
Happy Birthday to Maddie!

Mmmm. strawberries! That is definitely a weird one to induce labor (although 48 hours sounds really horrific).
No racing. Thank God, with all the humidity lately. I’ve got my 4th of July 4 miler and that is looking pretty horrific itself. I can just see my friends bailing on me . . .
I once went to the track and I think a track team was doing its workout. And I still did mine. I was very proud of myself for that! No one told me to get off, anyway. 🙂

I’ve shown up to the pool to find swim lessons happening and it is definitely a buzzkill! They leave one lane open for the rest of us. Um, thanks?

I love strawberries and those look amazing! I love the story about your daughter’s birth – 48+ hours of labor?! You’re my hero!

At least you WENT to the track. {Ahem} I love strawberries but they say Easter to me. Don’t ask me why, we just always have them. Blackberries say summer, along with watermelon and peaches. And…many other food and drink items I indulge in over the summer. Happy Birthday to your strawberry girl (is there a song there?). Thanks for linking!

I miss the fresh strawberries I could pick in Wisconsin. They were amazing. Around here, we’re waiting for Palisade peaches, which should arrive in stores in July.
angela @ happy fit mama says
How rude of that track team!! I would have jumped in with them and see if anyone noticed. That’s so funny about your daughter’s birth story. My commenced when I went to the hospital and was induced. Lol!

I feel you on the oldies. My music should not be the oldies, although I think I’m a hair younger than you. Love your sneakers!
Re: your tuesday linkup, I’m part of #GoTheDist and ridiculously excited about the midyear progress report next weekend. I’m slightly behind but within striking distance
Teresa says
I know my son’s football team hits the track early to beat the heat during the summer months …but heck, they could’ve at least consulted with you first! Lol
Regarding the oldies music, I have so much fun with my kids these days …they are always listening to the music I listened to in high school and seem so offended when I start singing along. They can’t believe that I know all the lyrics! Lol
Yes, strawberries make everything better …especially drenched in chocolate!
Laurie says
Those strawberries!!!!! Yum! Loved your description of your Sunday workout. 🙂 I am mentally preparing myself for my long run tomorrow. Why oh why did I ever sign up for an August marathon?
Jessie says
What a cute story about your strawberry girl! Sounds like a wonderful festival 🙂
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
We love strawberries over here and of course chocolate makes them better! Sounds like a busy weekend for you all. Swimming is where I always see a quick improvement every summer and it’s so refreshing. Have a great week!
Renée says
I don’t know, it still seems like you had a good week with regards to fitness!! just a shame that a couple of runs were not the way you would have wanted them!
I love the story about your strawberry girl! Happy Birthday to her! And YUM those choc-covered strawberries!!!
my week was pretty good. nothing to complain about really. I did not have any races though, but this week there is definitely 1 and potentially 3…
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
Those strawberries look delicious Happy Birthday to your daughter. I have never been to Top Golf but I am visiting a friend this week and they have one in their town. Maybe we should hit that up.
