I hit all the workout bases (run-bike-swim-strength-yoga) this week for the first time in a long time. Before I get to that, here’s how my workout week went:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Run 5 miles
Wednesday: Strength/core
Thursday: Run 4 miles +Yoga + Swim
Friday: Run 8 miles
Saturday: Bike 30 miles
Sunday: CrossFit + Swim
Sure I dabble with yoga at home using Youtube videos but the sessions are short at best no thanks to a certain distracting Ozzypup. I’d stopped going to the studio in the first place because the classes were so overcrowded and then I was injured. This time though it was the teenager’s idea to hit up a class so who was I to refuse?
Why is it so hard to resume a routine after a long break?
I wasn’t sure what to expect. I warned my daughter we’d best get there early to stake out a spot. Turns out we were the first ones there and the class was barely full and far from overcrowded even after it started. The instructor was an older British woman who reminded me very much of an instructor I had when we lived in England.
Isn’t this the truth?
I worried I’d be so rigid and inflexible and I pretty much was, although about halfway through I found my flow. My back-of-the-knee. high calf popliteus muscle was mostly okay but I still couldn’t bend it sufficiently for child’s pose. Argh.
At CrossFit I could already tell my time on the yoga mat was paying off. My hamstrings were much more cooperative then usual during power cleans. Now I just need to make my yoga practice a habit. Again.
Moving my weekend long(ish) run to Friday turned out to be a good move since the heat/humidity returned with a vengeance on the weekend. A sweaty 30 miles on the trusty road bike were so much better than attempting to run in those conditions.
Father’s Day was low key but nice. We visited my dad. I swear kids are hilarious and every single one is different, which is half the fun.
The teenager went retro with her Father’s Day sentiments
Let’s just say Thing 2 is our stoic child. Lol!
How was your week? Did you race? Is it blazing hot? Are you very different from your sibs?
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I am very different from my siblings in some ways, and alike in others. We spent it with my Dad & Mom, My sister & BIL, and 2 nieces. It’s always a very draining day going down there & today was no different.
It’s heating up here, too.Tomorrow is supposed to be ridiculously hot.

I also love it when my daughter wants to go to a class with me. I have been slacking on my yoga and I am feeling it for sure. I hope I can get back there this week

I find it hard to get back to it after a break as well. I think I read somewhere that it takes 21 days to make a habit but just 3 days to unravel one.

My sisters and I are alike but very different. I know it sounds odd but I think you get it. I got my dad some socks with his picture on them–the photo of your hubs with the crown kind of reminds me of the socks. They are hilarious and he loved them! What would we do without the internet?
Hitting the yoga mat tomorrow. Have a great week!~

Great job this week in getting it all in. Very wise on the bike ride in the heat too. My bike is still sitting on the trainer (shameful!). I have three dogs that help me do yoga at home. Sigh. But, I’m not motivated enough to take real classes. Maybe if someone dragged me there. 😉 Love those FD cards — both styles! My sister and I are very much alike but worlds different than our brothers. Thanks for linking!

I promised myself I would get into yoga this year and I simply have not, but of course that’s my M.O. about everything these days…baby steps. I couldn’t be any more different than most of my siblings. I have three older ones that I don’t speak to…it’s been rough for a long time but they sealed the nails on the casket when they didn’t even RSVP to my eldest son’s wedding this past September. Dead. To. Me. People ask me why we don’t get along and the answer is simple: They are shitty, shitty people (funny/sad how it took me a long time to figure that out). My youngest brother and I get along great, and he and I are the only ones who do anything at all for my 89-year old mom. I always tell her she didn’t figure out how to raise decent kids until the last two. Anyway…enough ranting. It’s cool your daughter wanted to go to the yoga class with you!

I keep saying that I need to find a yoga studio. I like doing videos at home, but attending class just has something extra that I like too. It is blazing hot and humid here. I just shower and change my clothes A LOT, haha 😉

I need my yoga so much; I recently had a month out because I had a persistent cough which ended up only showing up when I was lying down – so OK for the rest of my life, not so much for yoga. And my running was not happy! Hope you manage to get back into it. And so sensible to bicycle rather than run in the heat.

Glad you were able to get back to yoga! I do think going to classes can be much more beneficial than practicing at home, but I still feel like I get something out of it. Hope you can keep up with it!

Great job getting all those workouts in! I have been slacking with yoga lately and I can tell I’m my hips. Vso sweet that your daughter persuaded you to go to a studio class!

I haven’t been to a yoga class in months!
People think that my sister and I are very similar but we have alot of differences.
Nice father day cards!

Sounds like you need to find an instructor you really love 😉 I can see how an overcrowded studio and having to get there super early would lead to going less. Glad you had a good experience this time. I always feel better after my time on the mat.
Virjinia @ With Purpose and Kindness says
I need to get back to a studio for yoga soon! I do the same and practice with YouTube videos and a crazy pup. It’s so cool to hear that your yoga session helped with your power cleans too!

I’ve looked at yoga studios close by, and of course all of the classes that interest me are during the day, when I’m at work. I actually haven’t done yoga since before my race, aside from my normal stretching.

It’s so nice when you hit all the workouts you plan for the week – nice job!
Glad that you had a nice and low-key Father’s Day celebration with your dad yesterday.
Denise @ runheartfit says
I haven’t been to yoga since I started Pilates. I think I like Pilates better even though I know I need yoga for it’s flexibility.
Love the quote. I might have to use that one!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I keep saying the only way I’ll really get back to a consistent yoga practice is if I return to studio classes, but I’ve yet to make the effort to find a new studio in my area. It’s nice that you could feel a difference at cross fit – that quote is so true!
