Just like that, another school year is behind us. Let’s toast to the long, hot summer ahead by sitting down with a cup of your favorite brew.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you I’m not really a summer bucket list kind of girl. I prefer summers to be relaxing and low key. Unlike last summer when we went on this trip, we don’t have any exciting travels planned, unless you count college visits. There will be some of those.
If we were having coffee, no doubt I’d invite you to relax on our deck…aka my sanctuary. Caveman and the kids laugh at me because I spend so much time puttering around out here. Recently I dragged home a wind chime for added ambiance.
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that now that the kiddos are out of school, (the teenager has been out for 2 weeks already but my middle schooler just finished), I’m looking forward to sunrise runs, which are cooler, more peaceful and with less traffic. The track that is barely a half mile from here will also be open, waiting for a visit from me. I can’t even remember the last time I actually picked up the pace…
If we were having coffee I’d tell you I’m already counting down the days until the teenager graduates on May 24, 2019. Not so long ago, we laughed when her kindergarten welcomed the class of 2019. It seemed sooo far off….until it wasn’t. Speaking of the teenager, I’d tell you she finally got her Varsity letter at the end of track season. Although she’s been running Varsity track since she was a Freshman, injuries during her Freshman and Sophomore seasons resulted in her coach denying her a Varsity letter. This year, thankfully, that did not happen.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you I’d just gotten notice that Lululemon shipped my “race shorts” (they do shorts instead of a shirt) for the upcoming Lululemon Sea Wheeze Half Marathon in September. I have to admit I’d pretty much forgotten about that race. Knowing some cool Lulu shorts are headed my way inspires me to start training….maybe…
Here’s how my racing schedule is looking. Kind of sparse but oh well:
- 7/14: RnRCHI
- 9/15: Zooma Great Lakes
- 9/22: Lululemon Sea Wheeze
- October: TBD
What would you tell me over coffee? What’s on your summer bucket list? Any travel? Races?
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
I dont like to do much over the summer either. If I had my way Id spend it relaxing on the deck, by the pool or at the beach. I just try to take advantage of any time off of work and the warm weekends.
Wendy says
My schedule is pretty sparse too, by design. Summer goes way too fast and I’m planning on making the most of it!
Coco says
I have a big vacation planned in July but still want to get to the beach in August. I would LOVE to chill out on your deck. I try to enjoy my patio, but sometimes the mosquitoes chase me inside.

Looks like you have some fun races coming up! My summer consists of getting middle school graduated HS (not until June 8th, so late) and off to college, a couple low key trips to lake, and Spartan Utah with some extra days tacked on to explore Moab!
lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I do not have any fun summer bucket list plans. I think if I end up doing anything it will be last minute. Csnt really plan any thing this summer due to my crazy work schedule. But just saying it’s summer time is refreshing..haha.
Erica @ Erica Finds says
My May was packed but summer is looking pretty sparse, too. That’s OK! I only have a few races planned, too. (BTW RnR Chicago is 7/22 this year!)
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
That LuLu race is on my radar for one year as well. Look forward to seeing those shorts! 🙂 It did seem so far away when our kids entered kindergarten and now here it is! I’ve been very emotional about my baby graduating. All of you are talking about speed work now I feel like I have to do it too
Kim G says
Early morning runs are so peaceful and I’m all about less traffic. I wish I could get in more of these runs before work but since I start work so early it’s hard 🙁 I just settle for the early morning runs on Saturdays 🙂
Congrats to your daughter on earning her much deserved varsity letter!
Kimberly Hatting says
Well, I have this deep desire to do all the races (because I missed all of them last summer LOL). A race you should consider is the Bix-7…it’s in the Quad Cities, a week after RnR. It’s a 7-mile race of hills, hills, and more hills, but attracts a huge crowd of elites (cough, Meb!). I have not raced it for a few years, and am feeling a strong pull to head back….

I enjoy relaxing summers as well. Besides work I don’t like to plan much except for sitting on my deck and watching the world
Laurie says
My schedule for the summer is not nearly full enough. I may do some spur of the minute runs. The Sea Wheeze is on my bucket list! I will be anxiously awaiting your reporr!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I haven’t had a real vacation since UT and I’m dying here! Yes, there was Wineglass, but it was just a long weekend (and a long time ago), a day here, a day there, mostly involving family which is never really a vacation. I have about 6 weeks to go. And a lot of training to do.
I would love to spend more time on our deck, but it’s just a magnet for hornets. I have a mild phobia of stinging insects and they always seem aware of that.
Here’s to a relaxing summer — for you, that is. 🙂
Lesley says
I’m starting to put together summer flowers and outside decorations. I’ve been walking around my neighborhood this week, and I’m seeing what the neighbors have done with their patios. I want a wind chime, and would need a place to hang it.
Megan @ Meg Go Run says
We try to do both- pack it in but also relax. I realize that I am lucky I can do both since I have off in the summer and I don’t have kids of my own to worry about!
Darlene says
Shorts instead of a shirt is cool …perfect for you. Me I always wear a skirt.
No bucket list for summer
I work all summer and I use my vacation days for race-cations during the year.
But if I had one it would be:
1. eat ice cream often
2. BBQ outdoors
3. Go boating every weekend
4. Eat fresh fruits & veggies
5. Go hiking
6. Plants lots of flowers
7. Go to the race track
8. Play tennis often
9. Run Run Run

If we were talking about summer vacations, I would tell you that I just cancelled mine because like you, I sort of want just a low key summer.
If we were talking about back patios and decks, I would tell you that I really want to put a roof on my back deck. I just worry about it blocking all the natural sunlight from coming in through the back of the house. Plus, who wants to deal with construction all summer. I should have thought of this 2 months ago!..lol -M
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
I’m so ready for the slower pace of summer – time on the deck sounds good to me! As long as I get to the beach at some point, I’m good with just winging it.
And, I’m with you on getting back to early morning runs for both the peace and milder temps.
Jessica says
I’m like you in that I prefer my summers to be low key. Unfortunately, I’ve got a lot of travel for work on the calendar, so hopefully in between trips it will be as restful as possible. Have a great summer, Marcia!
Missy - Getting Fit to Find Myself says
I am working on my summer schedule/bucket list! I see you are doing ZOOMA Great Lakes. I doing it too! I am looking forward to it!
The Accidental Marathoner says
We are typically pretty low key over the summer too. My deck is my haven and I am out there all the time. Tons of flowers, wind chimes, and bird houses and feeders keep me happy and relaxed all season long. Congrats to your daughter on lettering!
Denise says
Your deck looks inviting. I love sitting in my backyard with a good book.
Lululemon shorts is kind of cool. I don’t own any. You’ll have to let us know how you like them.
Barrie says
The Lululemon Sea Wheeze Half Marathon looks amazing- Vancouver?! That is the big trip to wait through summer for! Have so much fun! I remember the preschool “graduation” where they announced the date…it seems surreal and it does sort of creep up on me every year how close it actually is!
Thelma says
Oh Shoooooootttt, QC Marathon (and half) is Sept. 23rd. Was hoping we could girls weekend it. And I did approach Tara about a weekend and she seems more receptive to it.
What about GOATz trail race (50k, 21 miler, 10 miler) on October 22nd in Omaha? 🙂
Happy Summer! xo
Teresa says
Now that this marathon is DONE, sparse is music to my ears! I love low key summers. There will be some cycling but that’s about it. However, Lulu shorts could probably motivate me to do something… Lol! Enjoy your sunrise runs, quiet track workouts and otherwise relaxing summer Marcia!
Debbie @ Deb Runs says
Congrats to your daughter! They do grow up fast!
We are enjoying the first of our vacations this week in Southern Utah and having a blast, but are trying to fit in so much that it’s not that relaxing (but is a ton of fun)! This trip started with my Grand Teton Half and then we moved southward. We’ll head to our beach house in September for a relaxing couple of weeks.
Thanks for linking up!
