This week’s Tuesdays on the Run Linkup is all about Running…and Mothers…and Mother Runners. Are you a mother runner? What came first: Motherhood or Running?Β While you ponder that burning question, let’s count the things Motherhood and Running have in common:
Running and motherhood are both effing hard. But just when you’re about ready to wave the white flag, you get a breakthrough.
Both often require waking in the wee hours and sleepless nights (Ragnar).
Consistency is key for both mothering and running.
There’s plenty of TMI and focus on bodily functions.
Both require lots of gear.
Runners and moms suffer from a unique kind of amnesia. We both forget how painful a race or childbirth is and keep coming back for more.
Running and motherhood both age us. Lots of running yields oxidative stress, while parenting nets us a few (or more) grey hairs…among other things.
Yet, at the end of the day, running and motherhood are both amazingly rewarding.
Happy Mother’s Day! What else do Mothers and Runners have in common?
Kimberly Hatting says
Oh yes, indeed. BOTH are amazingly rewarding π No truer words!!

Lots and lots of oxidative stress! LOL! How precious is that picture of you and the girls. So many wonderful memories. Happy Mother’s Day!
Laurie says
Great list. Love the one about forgetting the pain of a race or childbirth! If we didn’t we would each just do one marathon and all of our kids would be only children! π
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
They both need to be supremely organized!
Although I’ve never experienced childbirth, obviously, I’ve often thought it must be like racing. Someone once shot down that theory, I don’t remember why, but this non-mother thinks why would you ever do something that hard more than once, right?
Karen says
LOVE this! It’s so true, especially the “forgetfulness” and coming back for more part! Haha!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
they both require the art of multitasking! So true you know I love my mother runners!
Lesley says
I know the runner amnesia. All that effort, I’m in pain at some point during the race, and I cross the finish line, knowing I want more. We’re crazy.

This really shows that anything in life worth having doesn’t come easy! Great comparison!
lindsey @ livinglovingrunner says
We both require a constant supply of snacks π
MCM Mama Runs says
Sometimes I want to go back to more innocent times – you know when the kids were infants and a 5K seemed a long way. Teens and marathons are so much more challenging. π
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
All so true! Great picture of you and your girls π
Kelly @ Noodle to the Rescue says
LOL! So so true. Especially the TMI bodily functions.
