Phew! I’ve got one week of MAYhem under my belt. Anybody else feel this way? Like every. Single. Thing. Is going on right now and you’re hanging on by a thread? Anyone? Here’s how the workouts went:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Trail run 3.6 miles
Wednesday: Run 2 miles + Strength
Thursday: Yoga + Core
Friday: “long run” 6 miles
Saturday: Rest (track conference championships all day)
Sunday: Stepmill + CrossFit
Let’s recap the week loving/not loving style.
Not Loving: It was another single-parenting week (if you’re thinking there’ve been lots of those lately, you’re right). Definitely not fun with MAYhem going on.
Loving: It’s sooo much better/easier/healthier for me to be able to eat dinner (and exactly what I want) when the Caveman is not here. When I wait for him to eat, dinner rarely even starts until 7:30, which is way too late for me.
Not Loving: The OzzyPup made a snack out of my Plantronics wireless earbuds.
Loving. I’m back to using my Trekz Aftershokz. Sooo grateful to have them plus they’re awesome.
Loving: I finally went the “cheap” route in the pain cave and installed a 6′ curtain rod to hang the rest of my medals.
Not loving. About 40 medals fit on said curtain rod…but I’ve still got another 40 left to hang.
Loving: It was a gorgeous Saturday for the Track Conference Finals and even though the kids had events going on at the same time at different schools, somehow we dashed across town and caught them both.
Not loving. While the teenager rawwwwked her events with massive PRs, podium finishes and will advance to Sectionals, nerves and inexperience got the better of Thing 2 and she didn’t fare as well. While still so proud of both of them, its been tough to see one kid so happy while the other is so sad. I well know how it feels to have my behind handed to me in a competition. It can send you packing or you can work your tail off and comeback stronger. The teenager has overcome so many obstacles in her skating and track years (injury, bad coaches) and has come roaring back. She has true grit. It remains to be seen, but I hope Thing 2 will be the same way.
Loving. We live in a beautiful place, filled with great running trails I can access out my back door and ample wildlife.
Not loving. A woodpecker has been pecking into the siding of our house. This week I realized it’s not merely pecking in search of bugs. They’re trying to nest in there.
Not loving. Coyotes are on the rampage lately. When I walk Ozzy before bed, sometimes I’ll let Carlo graze in the front yard. I don’t get more than 50 ft away and, at 18 years old, Carlo’s quite slow. The other night, I was just completing the little loop I do with Ozzy and was at the end of our driveway when I heard a duck quacking frantically as it flew toward us, almost hitting me. Across the street I saw a coyote in hot pursuit, attacking the duck or its nest. Had I not been right there, I’m sure Carlo would’ve been next. Shudder.
This week: Band concert, High School Track Sectionals, 4 AP exams, 2 dentist appts, 2 birthday parties, 2 Mother’s Day celebrations. Just breathe.
How was your week? Are you experiencing MAYhem? What time do you eat dinner? Is grit/tenacity innate or learned?
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
So I feel you! I have one of those weeks coming up this week. Hope we both make it through 🙂
Wendy says
Yes! Mayhem! I finally got it…lol. It’s really nuts around here and I only have one in school. I do know what you mean about the struggle when one is up and one is down. We have to walk that line quite often here. I hope your youngest finds her inner toughness. That’s a tough lesson to teach.
We have coyotes here too, but thankfully our backyard is fenced in. Someone told me they could jump over the fence but I highly doubt it…geez, something else for me to obsess about!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I think grit can be inherited AND learned. My MAYhem is much less, but it’s still been a somewhat busy month with demanding relatives who think I don’t have a life. And let’s not even talk about all the things that need to get done (all the vet visits! trip planning!) that ain’t getting done.
I hear you on being able to eat what you want, when you want. Mr. Judy used to travel a lot. Now he doesn’t travel at all. At least it’s just 2 dinners, not 4! And we typically eat around 5:30-6 pm (yeah, we’re seniors, apparently), although it tends to get later in the summers.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Yep I am definitely experiencing MAYhem too! I am going away at the end of the month and I really cant wait, it will be such a nice break! I get so irritable when Rob gets home from work really late and I wait for him to eat dinner. I prefer to eat around 6 every night if possible!
Kimberly Hatting says
Yep. my MAYhem is merely Episode II of the last part of April as now I’m in the All Things Graduation mode. I have been gathering all kinds of old pics for finishing the scrapbooks (that had sat idle for the past 10 years)…which involved searching through my Facebook albums..BINGO! I found a slew of First Day of School pics (and several misc. others) so I don’t have to search through countless memory cards. Score!!! That’s great for the older daughter, her grit totally served her well. Hopefully, the younger daughter can see that as a great example to keep on working.
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
Your medal collection is INCREDIBLE! It’s feeling like Mayhem for me too. Hopefully it passes soon!
Lacey@fairytalesandfitness says
I like to eat earlier as well. But the only bad thing about that is I find myself snacking more after dinner if I eat too early
Sherry says
Sounds like a busy week ahead too! You’ll get through it. Cute dog but sorry to hear about your other headphones but Aftershokz rock! Congrats to your teenager! That is hard for Thing2 but it will make her stronger. Yikes hope those woodpeckers go away!
Coco says
I love your medal display – the curtain rod looks great! No advice on the kids struggles, but lots of sympathy. It’s hard when one is struggling but even harder when the other is celebrating! I hope you all get through the week OK!
Kimberly G says
Oh man, that’s so scary about the coyotes! so glad that no harm came to you, Carlo or Ozzy!
I really like the way you are displaying your medals in the “pain cave”!
Jenny|runningonlife says
I love the shower curtain idea! That looks awesome. And look at all those metals.
Lesley says
May is pretty busy, and thankfully the weekends will let me relax… except in two weekends. That’s my race weekend, and I’ll be on vacation for a couple of days 🙂 I’ll need to find a good balance of enjoying the runcation, and relaxing to save my legs for the race.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Ah yes Mayhem is in full effect here, and I’m bracing myself for single parenting stints both this week and next – ugh! I’m loving your medal display – the curtain rod was a great idea!
HoHo Runs says
Your medal display is awesome. I use curtain rods too, but I haven’t gone to the trouble of knotting mine on the rod like you. I’ll do it one day. I swear. 😉 Congrats to your track stars. I’m sure Thing 2 will be just as gritty as Thing 1. I don’t think we have Coyotes. But that sounds like pretty scary situation for the smaller animals! Thanks for linking!
Angela says
I was wondering why this month has been so crazy – it’s MAYhem!!! I love it! I hope your month slows down for you at some point!
Jenn says
Yikes! We do have a few coyotes here, but i hope our fence is somewhat of a deterrent.
End of April into May is always crazy over here. I have no idea when things are going to chill out. Hopefully soon, because I’m tired LOL!
Love all those medals! You should be so proud!
I’m sorry Thing 2 struggled. That has to be really hard to balance as a parent. <3
Jessie says
Your medal display is great! I love that you were creative with the shower rod, looks fantastic!
Sharon says
Wow you have a lot of medals!! The curtain rod is a great idea! Definitely sounds like MAYhem with lots going on and sounds like another busy week ahead.
Renée says
Actually for me, things are a *tiny* bit calmer now, but I DO know what you mean about mayhem!
Medals: sounds to me like a sporty luxury problem. Also, GREAT idea, I may have to incorporate that
Coyotes! OMG! In Illinois?? I thought that was just in the Southwest!
My week was good. Planned and got things done. Had some fun too!
We eat dinner too late for my stomach. That said, if we are both training or rushing off somewhere we do our own thing for food. I take dinner with me, for example, on massage nights (I prep it the day before or it’s leftovers, or I buy something prepared) and I also will eat something small before RPM (well before RPM!).
I think you can learn grit, especially if your direct nurture source has it as well. But, maybe those who seem to have a lot more do just have it innately. I’m sure Thing 2 will get there!
Andrea says
OMG…. We used to have a woodpecker come to our house EVERY spring for three years to build its nest. It was the most annoying thing ever. I would line water bottles up on the porch railing and just chuck one after the other at it until it flew off. Good luck!
Sara says
But Ozzy is so cute! He has the “who, me?” look down.
Love your medal wall! We did the same thing with the curtain rod. I need to add all of the latest hardware to it.
Anna @ Pipers Run says
That’s a lot of medals!!! Impressive!
That’s kinda scary about the coyotes. They are more of a concern on trails here but occasionally near homes too.
