It’s St. Patty’s Day week and the Tuesdays on the Run Linkup is all about feeling lucky. Have you been lucky in your running life? Do you make your own luck? Feel lucky to be a runner? Or has your luck run out? Tell us all about it!
I have to agree with good old Sam Goldwyn: The harder I work the luckier I get. Yeah I qualified for Boston at my second marathon. Lots of people call that “lucky”. What they don’t know is I’d been running (not marathons, but still) for 10 years before I even attempted to run a marathon. That’s a lot of miles and “seasoning” on the legs. Very different from someone who bangs out a marathon within their first year of running. You could say that race conditions were ideal for all of my BQs but more important, I worked my tail off and arrived to the starting line as well trained as humanely possible.
Of course there are times when luck factors into the equation. Like last year when I made it through the Berlin Marathon lottery on the first try. If only I could’ve been that lucky in the NYCM lottery….or London….or Tokyo…
With this recent injury of mine, you might say I was lucky I didn’t tear my meniscus. I feel like I really dodged a bullet on that front. But I’m still injured and can’t run. Most likely I’ll have to DNS my race in Carlsbad later this month. Unlucky, right?
There are many things I feel very lucky about:
I feel lucky to have found a sport/hobby I am passionate about.
I feel lucky to have my running tribe.
I feel lucky to be able to run at all…no matter how slow…
I feel lucky to enjoy incredible race/travel adventures.
You could say it’s a matter of perspective. Luck is in the eye of the beholder. Let’s go with that.
What do you feel lucky about?

Receiving a BQ in your second marathon some would say that is lucky. Some work years for that and still cannot achieve that. But even though you did, you still worked really hard for that!

Well, I have to say (like you) I am very lucky to have a wonderful sport that features a fabulous tribe of fellow runner gal pals 😉

There are so many things about running that make me feel lucky! But at the same time its hard work! Im glad you didnt tear your meniscus. But any injury feels like bad luck, right?
Melissa says
Sometimes it is easier to think of things as good and badly luck as opposed to rewards for hard work or things we can’t control. BQ sounds like luck with a lot of skill to me! Injuries always feel like bad luck – but at least you can see the somewhat bright side of It? (That you didn’t hear your meniscus)
Wendy says
Is there really such a thing as luck? I agree with you, hard work pays off. I do feel lucky that I am able to still run and do what I do after my diagnosis with RA. I’m also very grateful for everything running has brought into my life! If that’s luck, I’ll take it.
Erica @ Erica Finds says
Your BQ has nothing to do with luck (except race day conditions!)
I’m lucky to have met you! 😘 and in many other ways!
Jenn @ Runs with Sole says
You are absolutely right – sometimes we’re lucky (such as getting into Berlin – I bet that was amazing) but through our runner’s tenacity, we make our own luck too. Hope you’re back on the roads soon. Hang in there!
Karen says
Yes to all of this! 🙂 I hope your injury heals up soon!
Darlene says
Becoming runner was the best decision I’ve ever made. It was luck that I started and I thought it would be fun and make me healthier. I had no idea of all the extra benefits.
I feel lucky. I am running. I hope to run for a long time!
Lesley says
I’m grateful for a lot of things running had brought me. As crazy as it sounds, injuries are a blessing since they teach me how much I want to be out running. I don’t take it granted.
Becca | Rabbit Food Runner says
There are a lot of things to be lucky for and you listed some of the best. I am lucky that I am able to run as well with friends who love it as much as I do. This is a great topic!
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
Luck is certainly in the eye of the beholder. There are people who go through terrible times — and still find the silver lining & feel lucky. And there are others who only see doom & gloom.
I definitely like your take on it. 🙂
Jennifer @ Fit Nana says
As someone who suffered a meniscus injury, I am SO glad you did not. That is NO fun! Hopefully, rehab and PT goes really well for you and you’re back out on the road soon!
I also feel so lucky that I’m able to run and I love it. I’ve made some great runner friends over the years and I’ve loved every minute of it! (even those awful hard days when I didn’t love it at the moment. haha)
Erinn says
I feel like luck is really just hard work. But it’s definitely possible to feel lucky for something in your life – lucky as in blessed!
Janelle @ Run With No Regrets says
I definitely believe there is some luck involved with running, especially when it comes to getting injuries and winning the lottery for races! I am definitely grateful for the running community that I’ve grown to love and I’ll be lucky if I can keep doing this for a long time!
Denise says
I mostly believe luck is hard work in disguise. That’s great that qualified for Boston! I’m sure it was a LOT of hard work!! Like someone else commented, the luck is in the weather/running conditions and I wish you Good Luck with that!
The Accidental Marathoner says
I generally believe more in hard work than luck, but I was ‘lucky’ to get spots in the Chicago marathon for the past 5 years (one was run as charity), and ‘lucky’ to get spots in the MCM and Berlin my first tries. Come to think of it…I think I’ve had more luck than hard work get me to these races! I’m sure my luck will run out soon enough, so out for a run I go! Glad you don’t have a tear!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
Luck is in the eye of the beholder! It’s all about perspective. Glad to hear you injury is not too serious
Karen Bayne says
I think it is a lot of hard work and a sprinkle of luck 🙂
I guess it could be worse, but being out injured is never fun, hopefully you will heal up soon.
That… I guess it could be worse thing, never makes me feel better when things aren’t going well. Hang in there!
