Well hello March! Can you believe we got here so fast? Personally I’m pretty happy to have two of our most brutal winter months behind us. It may be on the chilly side here today but I spotted a band of Sand Hill Cranes migrating back the other day. That’s a sure sign spring is around the corner. Let’s join Deb and Coco, and sit down for a steaming cup of your favorite brew.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you I’m counting down the days until spring break. We’re heading to California. We fly into Los Angeles, spend a little bit of time there, then head down to San Diego. I’ll also be running RnRCarlsbad and I can’t wait.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you my thyroid woes are ongoing. The medication that worked for me was discontinued last December. Since then I’ve been on a substitute that doesn’t work for me. My T3 levels are in the tank and, despite working out and eating well, I gained 8 pounds this year so far. At my appointment, my Dr. said he’d have something compounded for me but 2 weeks and 2 out-of-state pharmacies later, I still don’t have it. In the meantime I’m fat, crabby, cold and embarrassed to look the way I do.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you I just got the notice to register Thing 2 for 7th grade. That means senior year for the teenager is imminent too. Where did the time go? Speaking of senior year, it’s time to look at colleges and so far we haven’t done a darn thing.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you I’m excited to participate in the Zooma Spring Cleaning Challenge that starts on March 18. It’s a 6-week program focusing on fueling the mind, body and spirit. Read more about it and sign up here.
If we were having coffee I’d tell you I was surprised how fresh I felt at the Gasparilla half marathon after running the 15k and 5k back to back the day before. I think heading back to the hotel and spending a good long time soaking in the pool worked wonders on my legs. We also wore compression socks and did Belinda’s legs up the wall yoga sequence. I’d been sitting in a sauna twice/week since last December to hopefully acclimate to the heat in Florida and I think that paid off as well.
What would you tell me over coffee? Are you racing this month? Traveling for spring break?
I’m linking up with Meranda, Lacey and Rachel for the Friday Five.

I think you look fantastic! And if you’ve gained 8 pounds, you’re hiding it well. I do feel you on the health woes tho. Definitely the downside of getting older. But hey, we’re still running! <3

I am also racing this month and going out to California but for a different rrace I am looking forward to get some sunshine and warmer weather. Heck it’s snowing here today after it being in70s last week. So over winter!
Farrah says
I’m sorry to hear about your thyroid issues! :[ I hope they come up with the medication soon!
Best of luck to you on the spring cleaning challenge!
Deborah @ Confessions of mother runner says
I think it’s fantastic that you felt so amazing after your race weekend despite the thyroid issues. You have really had some fun race-cations of late. I am jealous I need to plan one. We are in the middle of the college stuff now with our son. Exciting and stressful!
Kimberly Hatting says
We’re headed out for Spring Break, but not til the end of the month. I’m envious yo’re headed to Carlsbad….you’re hitting all of my bucket list hot spots. So jealous. Sorry to hear your thyroid is still not 100%…thinking of you. Hoping you get some solutions.
patrick@looneyforfood.com says
Have fun on break! Im headed to Florida in April and can’t wait.
Darlene says
Well from your photos, it doesn’t look like you gained any weight. Must be muscle.
Leaving for Florida in 12 days and counting!
Enjoy CA!!!
Kimberly G says
I’ve heard great things about the Carlsbad race and that it is tons of fun! I hope you have an awesome time in California. I’ve been to San Diego for RnR San Diego and it was SO much fun!
I’m so sorry to hear about your ongoing thyroid issues. I can;t imagine how frustrating that must be and I hope that you get the new medication sooner vs. later.
Beth E. says
I’m sorry you’re still struggling with thyroid stuff. My medication is compounded through Genesis Pharmacy (https://www.genesis-rx.com/). They mail it to me every 3 months. I know it’s out of state for you, but maybe an option?
Lesley says
I hope you have fun in San Diego. I haven’t been there since I was 8 or so, and it’s definitely a city I want to head back to. I could’ve done it for a conference last year, but since I started my new job just a couple months before, I didn’t go.
Rachel says
You lucky duck going to Cali! We’re on vacation hiatus for another year while we save up for a big one — taking the kids to Disney! I can’t wait… 🙂
Teresa says
Trisha said the same thing about Gasparilla ..said she really was not sore and felt good going into the half. I told her it sounded to me like she was ready for another full marathon! 🙂
Oh my! My youngest will be a senior next year as well. In fact, his father and I met yesterday with the boy and his high school advisor regarding college visits, applications, GPA etc… It’s hard to believe it is here already!
Hope you guys get some springlike temps soon!!! Carlsbad will be fabulous!
The Accidental Marathonber says
I feel you, my friend. I’ve gained 10 pounds and I DON’T have a thyroid problem! I really, really, really feel fat, crabby, cold and embarrassed to look the way I do! Hopefully you will find someplace to compound your med–otherwise you’ll have to go to the dark underground!
Chrissy @ Snacking in Sneakers says
Wow, a 7th grader?! Time really does fly right?
I’m not racing this month – recovering from an injury but *hoping* I’ll be good to race in April. Right now I feel so slow and blah since I haven’t been able to do anything for a few weeks, but I’m finally able to start again this week.
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Ugh I’m sorry the thyroid woes continue. I really hope you can find someplace to get your meds compounded.
How great to have felt so good after Gasparilla! Sounds like you did all the right things to take all that racing in stride.
Have fun in California! Carlsbad is supposed to be such a fun race!
Jen @ SprinklesHikes says
Thyroid issues are so hard – mentally and physically – to deal with. I dealt with them myself for a few years before finally normalizing. I hope you’re able to get your meds soon.
I’m always amazed at people who can complete Gasparilla! I don’t think anything I could ever do would acclimate me to the heat. Great job!
Kim W says
Thank you for sharing the Zooma Spring Clean Challenge! I checked it out and signed up. It sounds really cool.
I understand your frustration with your thyroid medication. I hope you find a compounding solution soon that works for you and gets you back on track. It feels awful to be in the midst of unbalanced thyroid hormones and feel like you can’t get out of it. Next month you’ll be telling us how much better you feel.
Judy @ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I do think the sauna helps & legs up the wall, but I don’t think I’d be so fresh after all that running.
I think february & march are the 2 worst months of winter, although february wasn’t so bad but march certainly an’t starting off so great for us.
I haven’t had a break of more than a day here & there since last June. 🙁
Zenaida says
8 lbs more or less, whatever. You still LOOK great!
How exciting you are going away for Spring Break. I will be home this year and I am actually excited by it. I like traveling but also like staying home. Hopefully I can do more spring cleaning and visit some friends during my time off.
This month I am running the Shamrock Shuffle and am excited about it!
Angela @marathonsandmotivation.com says
Ugh! I’m so sorry to hear about your thyroid, that is so frustrating. I hope you are able to get that straightened out soon. I’ m looking forward to reading about your race!!
Esther says
Ugh, thyroid (and any hormone) issues are so not fun to deal with. I think you are looking fab but I understand the feelings.
Yay for spring break! I hope you have an awesome time! I will be going to SD in June for the first time and I am so excited!
Hope all goes well with your race!
Coco says
Oh, that Alpaca meme is too punny! 😉 Sorry to hear about your thyroid issues. How frustrating. I think you should put off college stress as long as possible. It will work out.
Lisa @ Mile by Mile says
Glad you felt so good at your race! That goes to show that your fitness is in great shape especially since your thyroid is still giving you trouble. I’m jealous of your trip to California!
Jenn says
I’m so sorry your thyroid is giving you such trouble. I hope you can find a solution soon. 🙁
Gasparilla sounded like so much fun. I hope to get to run that one year.
March and April are pretty busy, race-wise. I had BDR Orlando on Saturday, Gate River Run this upcoming Saturday and then Publix Savannah Women’s Half in early April. It’s going to be a wild ride!
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Spring Break in California sounds amazing. Other than running RnR what other fun plans do you have for while you’re there?
Thelma says
LOU!!!! I’ve been so consumed by this new job and Iowa guests and haven’t had time to check your blog and see what you’re up to. I came by hoping for good news about your Thyroid…..now I’m sad. Keep at those doctors – there has to be a solution somewhere.
Speaking of Thyroids, when Karen was here we went to dinner her last night and met up with Katie and Kathy. You might remember Katie from blogland? Well, she had Graves Disease, which is a thyroid issue. Made her gain like 25 lbs. She finally got that thing in remission and the weight came off (she said with the help of Weight Watchers – hahah). Anyway, maybe there’s some relationship to what you have going on?!?!! Kathy, btw, is doing great….new boyfriend, working full time, going back to school for her PhD, kids, and teaching a nursing class. Whoa. She also has joined the ranks of old age weight gain she claims. I felt sort of better when I left knowing that maybe there’s some truth to this old age weight thingie?!?!?! I know yours is different, but maybe it’s somewhat related too.
Anyway, just babbling away on your blog. Ha. Miss you SO much. When do you leave for Cali? I have a little Leadville something for you…
xo
Shannon @GirlsGotSole says
Have fun at RnR Carlsbad! I’m running my first RnR in Nashville next month and can’t wait!
Ugh, I totally feel you on the thyroid woes. The weight gain is awful. I’ve got 8-10lbs to get rid of and it’s driving me crazy. Hope they get your meds figured out soon. I’ve had some ups and downs myself this year.
Sorry I missed Gasparilla this year, so many folks did it and I was on the fence about it! Gotta get on that in 2019!
vicki says
Sorry to hear your thyroid troubles are continuing … hope they get worked out soon.
Have fun in San Diego! I need to get a trip scheduled there to visit the MIL, but the hubs hasn’t moved much on it.
