Spring has sprung! The temperature is up, the sun is out, As I type I’ve got a houseful of kids, friends and dogs. All of that puts me in a happy place. Here’s how training shook out last week:
Monday: Easy swim
Tuesday: Run 6x1200m
Wednesday Bike 18 Miles, Run 1 Mile Swim 800 yds.
Thursday: RnR Virtual 5k
Friday: Rest
Saturday: Run 10.10 miles
Sunday: CrossFit + Recovery Trail Miles
This was a tough week of training for me. Tuesday’s 1200m repeats are probably my least favorite of any workout (besides swimming). It took a lot of mental strength to hang tough and do them all.
My spin class was nothing short of brutal. When we weren’t sprinting, we were climbing. Nine sets of sprints/climbs. The instructor kept asking “Can you give me a little more? 10 more rpms? A quarter turn on the intensity? A half turn?” I didn’t WANT to give her any more but the answer was yes, I can. And I did. Not fun, but rewarding? Yes.
The most fun workout of the week was doing the RocknRoll Virtual race to earn this cool boombox medal. It didn’t even occur to me that boomboxes are now retro but they are. There’s still time to sign up for this one!
At CrossFit, Coach Lucifer has been on a tear. After telling him I want to get in shape for a hilly half in Utah, he’s thrown down the gauntlet. I was proud I could push the weight I did on the sled last week (above), but didn’t expect him to load it up even more this week AND expect me to push it more. The sequence was 3x(one length of the box pushing the sled, one length 90lbs farmer carry, 1 length sprint). This brought me to the brink. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to collapse, get angry or cry so I walked around, recovered and moved on to the tire. This girl who didn’t think she could flip the tire a single time without hurting her back or hamstring is flipping that bad boy for 3 lengths of the box now. When Coach Lucifer wants more you give him more. I don’t mean to brag but I’m blowing my own mind with the progress happening at CrossFit.
Other highlights
I volunteered at the teenager’s track team Senior Night where we honored 21 graduating seniors with a post-track meet party. It was windy and freezing out on the track that night but let’s just say getting 115 sweaty high school girls as well as coaches and 21 sets of parents in a room for the party was a special kind of crazy not to mention exhausting, yet I loved it.
Find of the week
I’m kind of smitten with this Root Beer Kombucha from Live. There’s a sweet note on the back from the founder about how he was inspired to change his family’s beverage choices after his sister passed away. His father is a huge soda addict so he brewed kombucha in flavors even his dad would love. With all the health problems my dad is going through, you can imagine how much this resonated.
That’s it from here. How was your week? How do you respond when a coach asks you for more? What’s your least fave workout?
This weekโs Tuesdays on the Run we’re wrapping up April (what?) and grading our month. Be sure to stop by!
Because April is screaming to an end, this Friday the Runfessional will be open for the Runfession Friday Linkup. As always, I’ve plenty to come clean with so join me so we can start fresh in May!

I love Kombucha so I’ll definitely look for this brand. I really like trying out different flavors ๐
Loved your story about the spinning class, lol. I always want to say no when an instructor asks to go up “just one more level” on the intensity, but I always end up doing it anyway lol
Zenaida says
I’ve never tried Kombucha but have been curious. Wait, the Utah Half is hilly? I thought it was downhill.
HoHo Runs says
That’s where the devils been…at CrossFit. Keep him there a while, will you? I’m pretty sure if I pushed on that sled it wouldn’t move. Sad, but true. There is a cross fit gym across from our neighborhood. I’m tempted to take a peek inside. Y’all CF’ers look bad a$$, just sayin’. OMG. I still have a boom box. But, I’m retro too. Thanks for linking, Marcia!
Wendy says
Look at you push that prowler! Aren’t you glad you drank the CF koolade? I wonder if our coaches know each other…
Matthew is my Kombucha drinker. His favorite is from Door County–Tapuat. I can bring some home for you–they have a cola flavor!
Meranda@Fairytalesandfitness says
Haha I laugh at your comment in Spin class. I took a spin class that my sister was teaching and there may have been a few time when she said “turn it up” that I just pretended to!
Coco says
Root beer kombucha sounds … interesting. I’d give it a try at least. I always feel like I am going to collapse in spin class, but then it’s over and I’m glad I did it!
Michelle @ Running with Attitude says
Awesome job with meeting Coach Lucifer’s challenges ๐ You know I’ve never tried Kombucha – I really need to see what this is all about.
Kimberly Hatting says
Those 1200’s sound absolutely brutal! I’ve never done 1200’s (that I can consciously recall…). I need to come up with a speed workout for this week…maybe I’ll give those a go…maybe…
Lesley says
Way to go at Crossfit! The mind is always telling us we can’t do something. I know I don’t push myself enough, but I’m letting my knee hold me back. Maybe after my spring race, I’ll look into finding a coach. I need to increase my cadence and need someone to hold me accountable.
Tricia@misssippipiddlin.com says
Isn’t it awesome when we do something we totally think we can’t!!! I love seeing the progress your making in crossfit! Heck you got me thinking about trying it! I’m not sure I want a coach Lucifer though, you can keep him!
I use to really hate working chest and tri’s but I’m getting stronger so I don’t hate it AS much but I still do hate it just don’t tell my trainer!
Carla says
we do the sled all the damn time now in boot camp…and each damn time IM SERIOUSLY SHOCKED I can make it move!

You had an awesome week of training! I’ve never run 1200’s, just 400’s and 800’s. You look so strong pushing those weights! It would be so awesome to run in Utah or a summer half marathon anywhere but down here. Anytime I mention “travel” and “run” to my dear hubby I get the eye roll lol. I don’t feel well prepared for my next half marathon in less than two weeks but I will do my best. I hope you have another great week!
Judy@ Chocolaterunsjudy says
I hate repeats that are anything longer than 400m. 800m is on the edge for me . . . one of the reasons I like a coach/personal trainer (ah, if only I had an endless supply of money to go with it all), is that they push you to do more than you think you can.
Sounds like you’re going to rock UT!
My half this weekend is supposed to be a training run, UT has the potential for a PR but there’s that pesky elevation thing, so my real goal is my fall half, which is also mostly a negative drop — and UT is kind of like a training run for it (only harder, if that makes sense).
Lisa @ MIle by Mile says
Looks like you had a great week with a nice mix of workouts! I am so impressed by anyone who does cross fit because I find all of those exercises so intimidating. And I think having someone there telling me what to do would be weird (and make me more anxious about it)
Darlene says
Congrats on another productive week. You certainly vary your routines.
Now that I have access to a gym, I’ve been tempted to try spinning…but I’m not a biker so I don’t know.
I’m happy that it is finally warmed up but tomorrow is supposed to be another cool damp rainy day.
Rachel says
Sounds like an incredibly challenging yet rewarding week. Nice work!!
Anna @ Piper's Run says
Way to push through a hard week of workouts, it’s gonna pay off! I’ve never tried Kumbucha before!!!
Mary says
Wow, girl, you are working HARD! I used to run track so I can relate to how hard those repeats must have been. And I’m one who doesn’t think I’m going to be flipping any tires in this lifetime for fear of ending up back in the OR. So, yeah, I’m impressed.
Mary says
Oh and P.S.– how I would respond to a coach asking for more. I’ll do it if I’m sure it won’t injure me, otherwise not. I’ve had to try to get comfortable with “not” doing the same as everyone else in, say, yoga classes. Or just not go to certain yoga classes anymore.
Mary BEth Jackson says
You are turning into a cross fit beast!!!! Way to show Coach Lucifer that you are no sissy!!!!! Sounds like a fun family week too- that running party sounded like a lot of work for sure- but super fun! My least favorite exercise? Core work! LOL!
Ana says
Coach Lucifer!! that’s funny!! You are super strong, and getting stronger! way to go!
My son has informed me that CD players are also retro now! He had no idea how to use one!
That cake looks delicious!
Gina @runningaroundtheboyz says
I really think I need to get on this cross fit train. But, I may have to try to do workouts at home because there just isn’t a cross fit studio close to me. ๐ You are doing just awesome. Always so inspiring!
Deborah @ Confessions of a mother runner says
I kind of like it when the spin teachers ask for more.I need to be pushed sometimes to get where I want to be. Looks like a great week for you of training
Vicki says
Wow… you are killing it in Cross-Fit! I like that brand of kombucha too… my favorite is the cola, since I don’t drink pop any longer, it is nice for that cola fix.
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
What an exciting week! I love that boombox medal!
Michelle Rogers says
I haven’t tried a spin class yet, but I love road cycling and am so glad spring is here. I’ve enjoyed getting out there again after a long winter!
Teresa says
I love your CrossFit stories and your endearing pet name for the coach! ๐ I love Kombucha so I’ll have to try this one. They should really make a wine and margarita flavored one! ๐
Elaine @myRUNexperiment says
I’ve had a spin class instructor do the same where she’d ask to crank up the resistance – I’d do it but then I usually back off when I couldn’t hit the RPMs.
Way to push though! I’ve never pushed a sled and it looked like a tough workout.
Thelma says
Lou, you ROCK. Seriously!
xo
Sharon says
I’ve never tried Kombacha and root beer flavor? I love root beer so maybe now is the time to try it. Way to go on the Crossfit! Sounds like you are getting great results.
Kathryn @ Dancing to Running says
Virtual races are always such a fun way to get those training runs in. I love participating in them.
Abby @BackatSquareZero says
Least favorite workout = anything with burpees. I really really hate them and we do them all teh time at OTF.
